day 254 | action;
A long time had passed since Deanna had felt the distinct lack of her empathic powers. She had only felt this sort of emptiness once in her life before today and it was no better now than it had been then. Last time, she had thought she would forever be without them and felt as though she had lost a limb, but she was hopeful that this time she could figure out what had caused her to lose them in an effort to get them back. At least she had experience in dealing with this feeling. Not that this would help her much, but it was a start. It was better than nothing.

Unsure where she was or how she had gotten here, and feeling as lost and alone as she had ever felt in her life, Deanna wandered around the area. She passed what looked like a park of some sort, a library, and something that looked like a residential building. That seemed a little more permanent than she had been hoping for. She'd listened to the welcome message, but it definitely hadn't seemed like something the Federation would condone, which meant that she had been kidnapped somehow. That wasn't a good thing for many reasons and she didn't like to think of what Captain Picard might do when he found out, let alone Will Riker. It was inevitable that one of them would and she doubted either would take it well.

Still, being here was an opportunity to learn about a new location and Deanna intended to do as much information-gathering as she could despite the situation she had recently been exposed to and the one she was in now. What she really needed was a way to contact Starfleet, if not Captain Picard himself. She had found something that seemed like a communicator, but without having someone she trusted verify it, she was hesitant to use it. Whatever the case, she much preferred to make contact on her own terms and that included being in possession of her empathic abilities. So for now she kept searching the area. It wouldn't do her any good to stay in one place.

[ ooc: deanna can be found anywhere in the dome today, but she starts out in sector 2. ]

[ there are a lot of similarities and yet a good number of differences. the voice, the hair, the way she holds herself. it's like deanna knows her and yet she doesn't at all. a part of deanna wants to ask... and she really can't let it go without finding out. ]

Mother? What are you doing here?

[ okay this is going to be really awkward if she's wrong but she has to know. and really, if lwaxana is here, maybe there's hope for deanna to figure out how to work with her lack of abilities or work on bringing them back. ]

[Long years of training and the pressure of her rank have given Morgan a very solid grasp on her emotions; her poker face is hard to beat. That said, the question takes her completely off guard, eyes wide and lips parted very slightly for a moment too long before she speaks. On another woman it might not be so dramatic. Possibly, some day Deanna will realize just how extraordinary this reaction is.]

To the best of my knowledge, [she says carefully, evenly, though she's acutely aware that her mouth has gone dry.] I am no one's mother. However, given the prevalence of temporal anomalies presenting in this facility, it is not outside the realm of possibility.

[For all that she's adjusted well to being surrounded by people from a century ahead of her, the idea of running into someone from her personal future-- well, it simply hadn't occurred to her as a likely scenario.]

[ no, the voice, the word choice... it's different, almost wrong. this can't be her mother, which is both a relief and a grave disappointment. deanna's face falls, but she recovers quickly, offering an apologetic smile as she approaches. ]

I'm sorry if I startled you. You looked familiar. [ one day she probably will understand, once her empathy has returned. for now, she offers a hand, an effort to bridge an unintentional gap she'd made in a relationship that hadn't even begun. ] My name is Deanna Troi. I'm new here.

[ this would be easier if she had her uniform on, too. ]

[The reaction, she thinks, must mean the other woman was wrong. Which is... a relief? A relief, mostly, though it would have been an interesting opportunity, if it had been otherwise. But certainly all the more dangerous, as far as the sanctity of the space-time continuum.]

Robbins, [she says automatically, still a little blindsided. No one ever uses her first name.] I'm sorry, I know this is a difficult situation to adjust to, Ms. Troi.

[ the resemblance is uncanny and deanna stores that away for later. ]

Just Deanna is fine, or Counselor if you would prefer that. Mrs. Troi is my mother. [ and it makes her feel old. besides. married. if she's mrs. anything, it's mrs. riker. ]

It is a little overwhelming, but I think I'll get used to it in a day or so. [ at least she's already calmed down a lot since she ran into will. ]

Counselor, [she says agreeably, following up with the slightest crack of a smile. There's something almost apologetic in it.] I have been here for twenty-four days, but I have yet to break the habit of defaulting to rank.

I understand. [ rank is a habit she knows well, which is why she offered it as an alternative. ] I know others who can't break the habit, either. But it's understandable when you're in a career that involves rank. Do you mind if I ask what the context for yours is?

[ her career, her rank, whatever robbins wants to offer. ]

[ and then it clicks, the name. deanna isn't as intimately familiar with history as she probably should be, especially having grown up on a planet that isn't earth, so it took both captain picard and the woman herself explaining for her to make the connection. ]

Then you must be familiar with Captain Picard. [ the captain had mentioned her and deanna doubted he would allow any member of starfleet, no matter the time, to escape without his notice. ] I've served under him for a long time.

He has been very helpful, since my arrival in this facility.

[There's a definite note of approval there. Robbins likes Picard; she would consider herself under his command by default, no matter what, but he has earned her respect in short order.]

You have been in contact with the Captain?

He usually is. Captain Picard is a very compassionate and helpful man. [ and a lot of other things, but she isn't here to evaluate anyone right now. ]

Yes. He was one of the first people I saw when I arrived. His presence is reassuring, as I'm sure your captain's presence would be for you. [ or she assumes, anyway. ] How have you settled in? I know all of this must be strange to you. [ for someone from their past, living with people from the 24th century must have been very strange. deanna wonders how much robbins knows. ]

[Definitely a Ship's Counselor; she's only arrived, and here she's asking after Morgan's mental health.]

It is unusual, but fortunately, Starfleet training has always emphasized adaptability. [Because she's not here to talk about herself.] If there is anything I can do to aid you in acclimating to the situation, please let me know.

That hasn't changed. [ and probably never will. deanna makes a note of the change in subject, but makes no comment towards it just yet. ] Thank you. I think right now I just need to take the time to learn my way around. It's a little more confusing than learning my way around the Enterprise.

[ in some respects, anyway. in others, she's having no trouble compared to the enterprise. ]

It might be, but somehow I've taken to a new starship better than I have to this location. [ the question is whether robbins is talking about the d or the e. ]

I do hope I'm not keeping you from doing anything important today. [ it isn't that she's not enjoying the talk. it's just that she knows duty and all that. ]

[She thinks it's a safe bet no matter which future Enterprise the Counselor hails from; that much she's gleaned from her contemporaries. Robbins hasn't actively sought much information about the future-- the Prime Directive can hardly be kept intact under the circumstances, but she won't work against it-- but a general sense of scale is inevitable.]

You are not keeping me from my duties. And I would be pleased to help you settle in, if I can.

All right, let's see. This may be a strange question, but... do you know where I could find a nice chocolate fudge sundae?

[ when in doubt, find out where the nearest ice cream place is and order the biggest chunk of chocolate anything. deanna needs a few mouthfuls of happiness right about now. ]

Fortunately, though nominally a prison, this Asylum has a fairly high standard of living. I'm sure you'll find something to suit your preferences.
