day 254 | action;
A long time had passed since Deanna had felt the distinct lack of her empathic powers. She had only felt this sort of emptiness once in her life before today and it was no better now than it had been then. Last time, she had thought she would forever be without them and felt as though she had lost a limb, but she was hopeful that this time she could figure out what had caused her to lose them in an effort to get them back. At least she had experience in dealing with this feeling. Not that this would help her much, but it was a start. It was better than nothing.

Unsure where she was or how she had gotten here, and feeling as lost and alone as she had ever felt in her life, Deanna wandered around the area. She passed what looked like a park of some sort, a library, and something that looked like a residential building. That seemed a little more permanent than she had been hoping for. She'd listened to the welcome message, but it definitely hadn't seemed like something the Federation would condone, which meant that she had been kidnapped somehow. That wasn't a good thing for many reasons and she didn't like to think of what Captain Picard might do when he found out, let alone Will Riker. It was inevitable that one of them would and she doubted either would take it well.

Still, being here was an opportunity to learn about a new location and Deanna intended to do as much information-gathering as she could despite the situation she had recently been exposed to and the one she was in now. What she really needed was a way to contact Starfleet, if not Captain Picard himself. She had found something that seemed like a communicator, but without having someone she trusted verify it, she was hesitant to use it. Whatever the case, she much preferred to make contact on her own terms and that included being in possession of her empathic abilities. So for now she kept searching the area. It wouldn't do her any good to stay in one place.

[ ooc: deanna can be found anywhere in the dome today, but she starts out in sector 2. ]

[ by now, deanna's settling in a little more, not that this is much of a comfort. she's run into friendly and familiar faces, which are helping her with the loss she feels quite deeply -- nevermind everything else that happened before she arrived here. this man's staring makes her a little uncomfortable, mostly because of her memories of shinzon being rather prevalent still, and though she stops a decent distance away to keep space for now, she opts to be as open and friendly as she can unless he shows her that she should be more wary. ]

May I help you?

[ he doesn't look familiar to her at all, but that doesn't necessarily seem to mean anything here. ]

Oh! [ Well, that shakes him out of it. ] Sorry, I uh... I thought you were someone else.

You're new, aren't you?

[ considering she recently mistook someone for her mother, she can understand how easy it is to do something like that. deanna offers a gentle smile in response. ]

It's an easy mistake to make. [ speaking from experience here. ] Yes, I am. My name is Deanna Troi. May I ask yours?

[ A small part of him wants to respond with omigosh I know but luckily he can suppress it. ] Ah... it's Reid. Spencer Reid.

I'm with the Defence Force here.

Another vote for the Defense Force. [ she smiles. sounds like a good thing to be involved in, something she'll like to look into when she has her empathy back... if she gets it back. ]

It's very nice to meet you. I suppose you've been here for some time?

I guess you could say that... it's been 107 days now. [ Yes, he keeps track that precisely. ] Do you have any questions?

Is there anyone who's been here since day one?

[ 107 days is quite impressive in and of itself, but deanna's curious if there aren't others who have been around longer. ]

I don't think so... it's difficult to tell, we don't exactly have a census and some people come and go with their memories intact. I know there's a few that've been here for over six months, at least.

That's still a long time. [ longer than she wants to be here, that's for sure. ] Is it unusual for people to return with their memories intact?

I wouldn't say it's unusual per se... it's difficult to get any sort of viable statistics about the fluctuation of inmates, since some disappearances can go unnoticed for days. Data in general can be tricky to log, since the person responsible for doing so could disappear just as easily as anyone else.

And it isn't something you would want lying around anyway. It might be worth trying to set up a check-in system, where everyone has one or two people they check on every day. It isn't completely infallible, but it might help.

[ okay so it's a long shot, from what she's understanding of the way the place works, but it's better than nothing, right? ]

It's not a bad idea... just a matter of getting everyone to agree to it, which is easier said than done.

And then reporting back to someone or passing it down the line. [ she nods understandingly. ] A place like this would be difficult. It's too large to keep track of everyone, but too small to feel comfortable not trying.

Exactly. It's a tricky position to be in... especially if you're not used to working on such a small scale. [ Something he's definitely still struggling with. ]

Do we know how many people are here? [ now or in general. she just wants to see if the number here is anywhere near the crew compliment of the enterprise. normally, she'd be able to figure it out with ease, but now... ]

Again, that's difficult to say with the fluctuating numbers... but I'd guess somewhere between 60 and 80, on an average day.

[ she nods slowly. far fewer than either of the enterprises. she can work with that. hopefully. then again, she might just be in the same boat as he is. ]

All right, one more question. No one's been able to give me a satisfactory answer yet. [ a small smile crosses her face. ] Do you know where to find a good chocolate fudge sundae?

[ That actually makes him laugh a little, surprised. ] There's, uhm... there's an ice cream parlor in sector 4. I'm sure they have sundaes.

[ she's glad to have gotten a smile, laugh, anything for that and she smiles in return. ] I'll have to look for it. I hope we'll have a chance to talk once I'm a little more settled in.

[ she really does need to settle more -- or as much as any of them on the enterprise will settle in a place that isn't their ship, past or present -- and she also needs to find her husband again. maybe the two of them can find the ice cream parlor. either way, this answer will help her deal with everything she's dealing with. ]

Of course... I should let you get on with it. Good luck. [ A little smile and a friendly nod and then he leaves her to her settling. ]
