[ day 253 ] action :: open
[ Option One ]

First thing in the morning, Jean-Luc stops by the Defense Force headquarters to check in. He makes a habit of this every other day or so, just to see if he's needed in any manner but his usual patrol duties. So he can be found here with a fresh cup of steaming tea. He probably won't remain for long though, so catch him while you can if you need him.

[ Option Two ]

As often as he frequents the library, he should probably set up residence there. A home away from home, sort of thing. But nevertheless, he is at the library again. He's perusing the bookshelves, for the rare novelty of a book from another world that Earth. He frequently finds them in this place, as the prison does pull people in from everywhere. And this is his own personal way to continue his exploration of the Universe. Books, after all, are one of the most obvious founts of knowledge. And we know what people say of idle minds...

[ Closed to Helen Magnus ]

Jean-Luc has packed a dinner for both himself and Helen. He had sent her a message to meet at the stables later in the afternoon. He's in the stables, saddling up two horses, one for himself and one for Helen. A bag settles on the ground at his feet. He's in full riding attire. But yes, he has accepted that this meeting of theirs is an actual date. And he's okay with that.

He sets to spreading out the blanket, walking around it and tugging at each corner until it is flat and wrinkle free. It's a hint to the consummate perfectionist in him, should Helen take notice of it. While he knows perfection is rarely in fact attainable, he does continually strive for it in all things.

Once settled on the blanket with Helen at his side, he opens the bag and withdraws two sandwiches and two cups, teabags and a hefty thermos. He steadies the cups and places the tea bags in them, then he pours the warm water from the thermos into them. "I thought we both could use something nice and... simple in nature given the past few weeks. And I am glad to know that I was right."

And notice she does. It's yet another similarity, though she will also attribute that perfectionist tendency in part to a sense of control, both of which Helen herself shares. She settles on the blanket and waits patiently while he unpacks the bag and prepares the tea, graciously accepting what he offers. A long time has passed since she's done anything like this with anyone and she finds that she's enjoying this more than she thought she might.

"This is wonderful," she admits, her voice soft and yet full of emotion. After her explanation about John and the fiasco with the pictures and then their admission of feelings directly following that and now her request today, she has to admit that it is nice to just sit down and enjoy spending time with Jean-Luc. "I don't often have a chance to enjoy the quiet. Normally I don't allow myself much time to relax, as I can't stand being idle. But this reminds me in part of my villa in Italy. It was nice to spend an extended weekend there, though I didn't go very often."

Once every seven years for an extended weekend. That was all the vacation she could ever stand. Having so much free time here is driving her crazy little by little, so even something small like this is appreciated. It gets her out and about more than she would be otherwise.

He doesn't often make the time for such things as well. But given all of their recent turmoil, and the newness of their budding relationship, he felt that special attention to such detail should be given. He did want to get to know Helen. And he wanted her to know him. He wanted them to have good memories to go with whatever the prison might throw at them at any given time.

"A villa in Italy?" He seems very curious and intrigued by the idea. "Will you tell me of it? Why did you not visit often? How much land do you own?"

"Indeed," she answers, thinking of it fondly. "It was a place I would go once every seven years for an extended weekend. That's about all the time I can stand sitting around doing nothing." She is British to the core, after all. "The villa itself is large enough, very spread out so that I have plenty to do just by walking across it. I don't often take people with me when I go. Usually, I need everyone else to stay with their respective Sanctuaries while I'm otherwise occupied. Besides, I wouldn't want everyone knowing my Italian secret."

She isn't certain why she's about to tell him one of her best-kept secrets. Perhaps it's their connection, the bond between them that speaks of trust and compassion. It isn't as though this secret is a particularly vile one, but it isn't something she normally has time for and no one really knows about it. What Will would think if he knew... Declan knows, she's certain, only because James knew and James was there when she was learning. She smiles and leans back on one arm as she thinks about it all.

"It's the only place I have a piano. My mother would be ashamed if she knew. She taught me to play when I was much, much younger. Said all young girls of good breeding needed to know how." Comes with being born in the Victorian era. It wasn't something she'd ever tried to teach Ashley as her daughter had been born into a much different culture and she doubted Ashley would ever have had the patience for such a venture. She tilts her head in his direction to see how he's responding to this revelation. "I don't play much anymore. Don't have the time or the reason to."

"I understand the need for solitude and see no harm in the occasional need for retreat from the universe at large." If he had a villa such as that, he would probably visit it alone as well. As it was, the vineyard sort of served that purpose. Only his brother, his wife and son lived there. And Jean-Luc had hastily retreated there after his initial assimilation by the Borg, needing some time to recover. He could easily equate the two.

He smiled a bit at her mention of her mother teaching her piano. "My Mother thought I should know as well and attempted to teach me. And there are times that I wish I hadn't thwarted her attempts or squandered such valuable lessons from her while she was alive."

"As did I," Helen responds softly as she shifts her weight to sit up properly. It's been a very long time since she saw her mother and there are days that pass where she misses her more than others, days where she wishes she had taken the time to learn the things she "should have" known.

Endeavoring not to close herself off and block Jean-Luc out of her thoughts and feelings as she normally would have, Helen turns a small smile towards her companion. "Well, then, when I meet you in the future, perhaps we can learn it together." When, not if. She knows she's making a lot of assumptions with that, but at this point, she doesn't care. She'll do a lot to reach him again, even believing in the very small hope that they're from the same universe. "Until then and until I can take you to Italy myself, we have this."

For a moment, she simply gazes at him, taking in how he looks, how he's looking at her, and then she turns to focus on her tea and food. They have this outing, their relationship, and their love for each other, to name a few things. She's convinced that she's gone soft, though she knows a great many people who would be happy to see her like this, to know that she's let someone in through her emotional walls and into the core of her own being. She doesn't regret it, doubts she ever could, and hopes he won't, either.

Her words promise of a future, of her finding him in his own time as he is simply human and would not live forever. But the thought of her finding him in that time warms his heart. That warmth spread throughout him and very near overwhelmed him until he leaned over to gently press a kiss to the corner of her lips, then her cheek, then one palm lifted to cup the side of her face, and his lips found hers. It was very forward of him. But sometimes there were just no words that would suffice, only action.

Helen knows full well that she's being more than a little wishful with that line of thought, but at this point it's all she has to hold onto. She's willing to wait that length of time for him, because she can't even entertain any other option. If they're ever given the opportunity to escape within this world, she will absolutely remain with him. However, if they're given a choice of going back to their separate worlds, staying here together, or going together to one world or the other, her only choice is to separate. She has things to do in her world and none of it can be trusted to anyone else. She would never be able to skip to his time and she could never ask him to remain in her time. He belongs in the future, she to the past.

Only here can their times collide and collide they do. Her eyes slide shut at the gentle kisses, her head turning towards him as he presses a hand to the side of her face. She leans into the embrace, one of her hands lifting to rest against the top of his shoulder. Her lips part as she opens up fully to him, sinking into the kiss and deepening it. Once, several days ago, she'd been bold enough to kiss him like this; now it's his turn to be forward enough to kiss her. And dear god is she enjoying it. Her free hand moves to rest on his thigh, close to his knee, as she curls her legs up under her, and she uses it as leverage to keep her balance. Now she just hopes he won't mind that touch, that it isn't going to be too much, too forward, for their budding relationship. She isn't yet willing to lose him.
