[ day 253 ] action :: open
[ Option One ]

First thing in the morning, Jean-Luc stops by the Defense Force headquarters to check in. He makes a habit of this every other day or so, just to see if he's needed in any manner but his usual patrol duties. So he can be found here with a fresh cup of steaming tea. He probably won't remain for long though, so catch him while you can if you need him.

[ Option Two ]

As often as he frequents the library, he should probably set up residence there. A home away from home, sort of thing. But nevertheless, he is at the library again. He's perusing the bookshelves, for the rare novelty of a book from another world that Earth. He frequently finds them in this place, as the prison does pull people in from everywhere. And this is his own personal way to continue his exploration of the Universe. Books, after all, are one of the most obvious founts of knowledge. And we know what people say of idle minds...

[ Closed to Helen Magnus ]

Jean-Luc has packed a dinner for both himself and Helen. He had sent her a message to meet at the stables later in the afternoon. He's in the stables, saddling up two horses, one for himself and one for Helen. A bag settles on the ground at his feet. He's in full riding attire. But yes, he has accepted that this meeting of theirs is an actual date. And he's okay with that.

You're quite welcome. [ He nods, circling his other arm around the large volume he holds. ]

Would you like to sit and talk for a bit? Do you know anything of the bard's plays? [ He gestures to the book. ]

Ah, sure. I'd like that. [ Exactly what he needs right now, actually. ] And yes, I do. Quite well, actually.

[ He leads him to a table and takes a seat. ]

I've been thinking we might study his plays, a group perhaps. Something to fill the time. A table read or perhaps a production of the plays themselves. Mr. Data and I often enjoyed doing so on the holodeck of the Enterprise, our ship.

[ He knows. Ooh he knows. It's only months of practice that keeps the geeky giddiness to a happy smile that could just as easily be interpreted as excitement over Shakespeare. ]

I think that's a good idea — we have a few clubs and organizations by now, but nothing like that. There was a drama club a while back, I believe. Maybe some of the former members would be interested.

[ His brows rise with interest at the mention of a drama club. ]

Perhaps a book club or... a classic literature and poetry class.

[ Nodding quite happily. ] I've heard some talk about a book club before, but I'm not sure if any of them actually got off the ground. There seems to be some interest, though.

[ Not as much for him. He reads too quickly. ]

[ He seems to turn inwardly thoughtful, mulling over the idea in his mind before tapping two fingers against the top of the table. ]

It will require some consideration. As it is I am leaning more toward a reading of the Bard's work. Although I am also fond of other literature genres... and poetry.

Shakespeare isn't a bad place to start... I'd guess most people are at least familiar with him, but then again... there's no telling with this place. There's always the possibility of branching out to other work later.

Yeah, of course, you're correct. Perhaps in a day or two I'll present the idea to the masses, cast out a net so to speak, and see what sort of response there is. What of you, Doctor Reid. Would you enjoy a reading and discussion of the Bard's plays?

Sure, that could be fun... [ Although. ] ...if I have the time for it. I, uhm... my schedule's starting to look a little full, even here.

You do like to keep yourself busy, I have noticed. But Doctor, I wonder if you make time for anything that isn't considered work.

Well, uhm... [ Busted. ] ...I... try to? I think I'm moderately successful, at least.

Trying and doing are two entirely different things, Doctor. And you must take care of your own self before you can adequately and proficiently care for others. [ He can see it in Reid's eyes, the weariness. ]

I do understand though. I've been forced and coerced to take numerous recreational times and holidays. And perhaps that is why I see the same overworked and overtaxed look about you. We are similar in this way.

[ He's not sure he could explain what this conversation is doing to him even if he tried. Childhood hero, some kind of replacement for an absent father figure, speaking in ways that pulls his thoughts sharply towards Gideon — there's emotional turmoil on the inside, but he only lets the smallest amount leak out into his behavior. A flicker of eye contact, uneasy shifting in his seat. ]

I know that... sir. I do. I guess it's just... [ Swallows. ] ...habit. We didn't exactly get a lot of vacation time back home. Being idle doesn't work so well for me.

[ That eye contact and shifting in his seat says a lot to Jean-Luc. He knows he's making him uncomfortable in some way and that isn't his intent. ]

One is only idle if one chooses to be. [ Of course, Jean-Luc found time to read and recite plays with Data and ride horses all quite exhilarating, both mentally and physically. He would consider none of them idle activities. ] Vacation, as it were, is what you make of it. Although I would not call doing something for yourself here a vacation, more an attention to acts you find pleasing.

[ He makes a thoughtful hum, mulling over the words for a moment. What does he even do here? He works. He leads, however reluctantly. He teaches, not one class but two by now. He plays chess and vacuums the library for any books he has yet to read, he goes to the movies but not nearly as much as he did when he first arrived. So far, it's not that different from what he does back home.

And then there's Kitty. His saving grace. The thing that tugs his somewhat worried frown into a fond smile. ]

Well... with that definition I think I'm doing okay.

[ He waits patiently while Reid works through whatever he needs to in his mind. Then he offers a small smile and nods. ]

Very good. That is very good to hear.

[ He gives a grateful smile. This conversation was certainly something he needed without even knowing it himself and although nothing really changed, he feels lighter now. It's weird, emotions. ]

Ah... I should probably get going. Work calls. [ Metaphorically this time. ]
