So did we know there were things like that in here, or was it a lovely surprise for everyone else, too? Because frankly I'm not entirely reassured by the promise that they've been contained.

[Private to Jack Harkness]

Are you alright?

Should give me something to do; Jack's a bit worried about vampires at the moment, so I'm staying indoors for the time being. Long story. [And while he may not agree with the hiding out bit its something that has Jack worried enough that he's willing to do it for the time being.]

[ He adds on a filter, just in case. You never know. ]

Yeah, I heard something about that. [ Jack warning them. Kitty giving her atheist boyfriend a crucifix — one he's wearing around his neck right now. ] Are you alright?

More or less. [The bandage on his neck might make that a bit hard to buy, but he sounds calm enough for the moment.] Jack thinks if he backs off and we lie low for a bit Spike will forget about it, but personally I don't think that's very likely. He promised him he wouldn't alert the Defense Force, though, so I'd prefer you keep this between us. Jack's been a bit... it's sort of complicated. He's taking this worse than he usually does with these kinds of situations.

Are you kidding me? [ No really, good job on pissing him off with this. ] You really expect me to not bring this to the Force? Ianto, do you have any idea how often we hear about incidents like this when it's too late for us to do anything about it? We already have one vampire attack that went unreported from a member on the Force, we don't need another!

We're here to protect people, not just sit by and watch them do stupid things like this!

[Its very rare to see something besides that professional butler calm from him, but he's angry and scared, not about the damn vampire but about the other thing. The one in his future.]

I die! In a few months. I die in his arms and its already happened for him so do whatever the hell you want with the damn vampire, but you leave us out of it. We're sitting this one out.

You die..?

[ That takes the air out of him for a moment, but he finds his footing surprisingly fast. Maybe this should garner some sympathy, but it doesn't. Instead it only serves to make him more angry — he's lost enough teammates to similar circumstances. Elle went off the deep end because she refused help. Gideon thought he could just leave without a word, a clean break that wasn't clean at all. And Emily...

Emily just came back from doing a similarly stupid stunt.

When he speaks again his voice is tense, brimming with anger and hurt and disappointment. An undercurrent of a threat he'll never make good on, but can't keep away from his tone of voice and in this moment he understands how Hotch must feel every time one of his agents goes off on their own or fails to tell him about something so crucial. ]

You don't have to deal with the problem, but if you ever leave something like this unreported again... your lives aren't the only ones at risk here. I didn't expect this from you.

Which is exactly what I told him after Spike took a chunk out of my neck.

[He's still visibly angry, frustrated beyond imagination at every aspect of this situation because he agrees; they help people. It's what they do. It's what he apparently dies doing. And yeah he's scared; not of Spike, not really. He's no worse than anything else they've dealt with and a hell of a lot better than Daleks or Cybermen. He's scared of how he dies, of the fact that he dies at all because who wouldn't be. But Torchwood helps people, and he's spent two years quietly reminding Jack of that because when you're so old and you've seen so much he thinks it must be very easy to forget that. He knows Jack hasn't cared about anyone else in a long long time and that's what's making this so hard for him.]

I agree with you, I think we need to stand up to him. But Jack isn't doing well with this. With him threatening me. I don't think he handled it very well when I died and he's got me back now and it seems like all he can think about is that he might loose me again. So if he needs to do this a certain way that's what we'll do. I love him, and he needs to be able to keep me safe right now and that's the end of it. You don't know the first damn thing about us or any of what we've been through so why don't you ask next time and save the lecture?

That's no excuse to risk the rest of the dome and you know it. [ Sharply. ] Do you have any idea how many teammates I've lost because they had to do things their own way?

Too many. I'm not losing any more.

[He doesn't respond to that question because losing Tosh and Owen is too recent and before that it's Lisa and Canary Wharf and all of Torchwood London burning and it's hard enough just talking about his own death never mind all theirs.]

I'm telling you right now even though it's not what he wants because people are in danger from Spike. So why don't you just stop shouting and think for a moment. Do you really imagine he had time to cause any trouble yesterday? Jack is the one doing things his own way and my loyalty is to him, not you or anyone else here. But sometimes he forgets how to care about people. So this is me doing my part and this is the end of it. We won't be helping you stop him or anything else. He's not losing me and I'm not letting go through that again. Please stop pretending you'd be any more impartial in this situation.

I already know how I would deal with the situation. I've been there. [ Sharp. Quick. He didn't love Emily in a relationship kind of way, but she was family. He knows how he'd react. How they all reacted. ]

And are you even listening to me? I told you we'll deal with it. You take care of Jack.

Sorry. [A quick, deep breath and a hand across his face for a moment.] Stressful few days, you know? [Hesitantly.] I've never seen him react like this before. Giving up on fighting like this. He said that after I... after I died he just left. Dropped everything and ran away from it all. I guess that was really recently for him. I'm trying to get him to calm down and work with everyone on this, but I don't know how likely it is. I'll try and let you know if anything else happens but as I said, he's my priority in this.

Don't worry about it. [ Releasing a breath. ] Believe me, I know what it's like... maybe more than you think. [ And this is where we leave that subject. ]

Just keep me posted if anything changes. I'll deal with the Force.

Thanks for understanding. And like I said, if you could avoid mentioning any of this to Jack I would be grateful. I'll see if I can persuade him to help more.

Thanks. [He looks like he wants to say something more but after a minute he awkwardly switches off the communicator instead. Not like there's much else to say, is there?]
