248 // open voice + action
[ Voice, open to all ]

'Bout a week ago, some guy asked me how many people I'd seen come an' go since I got here. In three months it's somethin' like... 70 out of 110. Probably more now, I ain't bothered countin'... but that kinda stuff can really get you down, even when you don't know th' numbers. We lose people all th' time here. People we got to know here, friends from back home... [ He falls silent for a beat. Draws a steadying breath. ] An' it's sad. It's damn sad an' there ain't nothin' we can do 'bout it but keep goin'.

...I guess I just wanted t' remind y'all about th' Memorial Garden down in Sector 4. Anyone who wants t' plant somethin' there in memory of someone they lost, whether they were here or back home... you're welcome to. It's for all of us, th' ones that are still here an' the ones that aren't.

[ Voice, locked to Sougo ]

Hey, Sougo... I need your help with somethin'.

[ Action, open ]

[ Aidan will be dividing his day between lugging boxes between Sector 2 and 4, and later spending a few long hours in the Memorial Garden. Feel free to approach the pensive country boy! ]

[ And a few emotional hours later, he does make the call. It's brief and informative and then he heads down to the garden, feeling wrung out like an old rag but still somewhat... liberated.

He draws a deep breath as he comes closer to the garden, one hand raised to wave at her. ]

[Miranda is waiting by the gardens on a bench, some tools for pruning and weeding set to the side. She has a blanket set out and two baskets that are full of the foods she prepared and some drinks.]

Oh, Aidan, over here! [She waves back happily, wondering if he's still as down as he was earlier.] Do you want to eat first, or work in the garden?

[ He is as down as he was before. It's a lingering kind of down, heavy and damp and sticking to his skin like old chewing gum. Never had as much trouble shaking anything as he does this, hard as he's trying. Cleaning out the apartment was one step. Spending more time with the few friends he has left is another. ]

Hey, Miranda. [ He musters up a brave smile. ] Y'know, I'm kinda hungry... is it okay if we eat first?

That's sounds just fine to me. [She motions to the blanket and moves to sit down herself, making sure there is plenty of space for him.] I made roast beef sandwiches, a salad--I hope you don't mind olives and pickles?--buttered rolls, and there's some leftover apple tart if you would like some. Oh! And raspberry tea.

[She's rambling just a little bit. She so used to cooking for more than one that Bak having left has been harder to adjust to than she thought.]

[ He takes a seat, eyes widening a little as she lists all the goodies she's brought. Wow. ]

Darn... you brought a real solstice feast! You didn't have to go through all that trouble, I could've brought somethin' too!

Oh, no, really it was nothing, Aidan. [She looks a bit embarrassed at all of that praise.] Some of this is leftovers I didn't want to waste. I'm getting used to um...cooking for one.

[She takes out one of the plates--still hasn't even thought about the disposable kind--and holds it out to him before opening up the containers.] Now what would you like?

[ He takes the plate with a smile — definitely understands the trouble with cooking for one suddenly, even though he has Lacus and Sougo to pawn off leftovers on. ]

Little bit of everythin', please. Ain't every day that I get to try your cookin', so I can't pass this up!

[He makes it sound like such a treat. She doesn't think the food is terrible--she's improved a great deal at cooking over the last few months--but it's nothing special either. Still, she gives him a bit of everything and takes a second plate to put a slice of the tart on.]

It's not much, but it's a lovely day for a picnic. I wish we did things like this more often. Some of the parties are...fun and interesting to meet new people, but I'd take a peaceful picnic over them.

[ It is a treat. For Aidan it was never about fancy food but rather who made them and, perhaps more importantly, how much love and care was put into it. If Helix ever cooked he would've tried to eat that too, although he is pretty happy that he... didn't. For health reasons. ]

Yeah, I agree... there was a picnic in one of th' parks not long ago. Plenty of people but still kinda... kinda quiet, I guess. We should do that more often.

[She brushes some hair back behind her ear and wonders if she should have brought a tie for it. Still, she nods in agreement.]

I know a lot of people want to go home--myself included!--but days like this are...good for us. Not worrying about things at least for a little while. Everyone needs that. [Then she laughs awkwardly.] The closest we had last was that tea party. I'm not sure it's the same.

[ He nods a little, agreeing while still disagreeing with parts of her statement. He for one doesn't want to go home... or didn't until Helix disappeared. Now he's not so sure anymore. Marina has become a home to him and leaving it behind now feels just as hard as it was being away from his real home in the beginning. ]

I, uh... I kinda missed that. Slept through th' whole thing. [ Because he was horribly hung over. ] Sougo didn't seem to enjoy it though, so I can only imagine what it was like.

I didn't experience anything strange myself, but um...people were very different that day.

[The politest way of saying it.] It wasn't so different from the other times things like that happened, but it was rather...deliberate of them.

[ Nodding and chewing. ] You're right... usually it seems to be a whole lot more of a mistake. Don't think they've ever invited us to be messed up like that before.

So, uhm... what happened? Sougo only really talked 'bout evil cake.

[She takes a bite herself and chews for a moment while thinking of how to explain it.] People would drink it and they would act differently. Worried about time. Or in a much happier mood than was...appropriate. It was unsettling all in all, but I didn't see anything dangerous, so perhaps they did it to...make us realize they could.

[ He suppresses a shudder. ] Man... I think I liked it better when they goofed up. This is just... this ain't right, them doing this to us.
