248 // open voice + action
[ Voice, open to all ]

'Bout a week ago, some guy asked me how many people I'd seen come an' go since I got here. In three months it's somethin' like... 70 out of 110. Probably more now, I ain't bothered countin'... but that kinda stuff can really get you down, even when you don't know th' numbers. We lose people all th' time here. People we got to know here, friends from back home... [ He falls silent for a beat. Draws a steadying breath. ] An' it's sad. It's damn sad an' there ain't nothin' we can do 'bout it but keep goin'.

...I guess I just wanted t' remind y'all about th' Memorial Garden down in Sector 4. Anyone who wants t' plant somethin' there in memory of someone they lost, whether they were here or back home... you're welcome to. It's for all of us, th' ones that are still here an' the ones that aren't.

[ Voice, locked to Sougo ]

Hey, Sougo... I need your help with somethin'.

[ Action, open ]

[ Aidan will be dividing his day between lugging boxes between Sector 2 and 4, and later spending a few long hours in the Memorial Garden. Feel free to approach the pensive country boy! ]

Aidan Reilly, sir... I mean, Captain! [ If this wasn't voice, he'd do a salute. ]

Well met Mr. Reilly. Did you have anything to do with the establishment of these gardens?

I guess you could say that... there's a whole bunch of us an' it wasn't my idea to start with, but I guess I kinda... kinda took on a leader role to get things rollin'.

It's a community effort tho, I can't take no credit for it.

I like to think that those who have left us continue on in our memories long after they've gone. [ He's thinking of his parents and many a fallen comrade. ]

Even here in this place. [ Where he has also lost many friends and acquaintances. ] A memorial of sorts can only add too those memories.

That's what I'm hopin'... not everyone seems to agree though. I don't get it, I mean... 's harmless. We're not buryin' anyone, just findin' a way to remember 'em and maybe take care of ourselves a bit better by doin' it together.

Hmm. [ In that short, simple syllable there's the tone of curt displeasure. ]

I suppose I would refer you to the old adage that you can't please everyone and add that you can't please them no matter your good intentions.

Yeah... yeah, I know that. My dad used t' tell me that all th' time. [ And yet he keeps trying to please everyone. ]

's just sad, I guess. That we can't even come together for this.

[ He certainly hopes the comparison with his father is a good thing. Although with that sort of advice forthcoming, he would speculate that it was. ]

All is not lost when one's goal is peace, Mr. Reilly. It takes time to change the mind of an individual, much less a group of people as a whole. But minds can be changed. And what have we here in this place but time?

[ It's pretty much the best comparison one can get. Being likened to his dad is equal to being likened to a God in Aidan's eyes. Though to be fair, Picard may have just surpassed that. That... that just summed up a life philosophy he'd all but abandoned.

There's a stretch of silence and when he speaks again, his voice is raspy.  ]

You're right. You're absolutely right.

[ Jean-Luc remains quiet for some time as well, allowing Aidan a moment to gather his emotions just as Counselor Troi had done for him when his own voice had sounded something similar to Aidan's now. ]

I would also suspect that while the memorial gardens perform a certain purpose, that they're also perpetuate introspective thought as a place dedicated to remembering is so prone to do. And I've found that many people fear both; loss and an abundance of thought, especially when said thoughts turn inward. Perhaps this has something to do with those who would oppose your efforts.

Y'know, I ain't too good with all that headology stuff but maybe you're on to somethin' there. It makes sense... just wish there was somethin' I could do to fix that, you know?

Runnin' ain't solvin' nothin'. [ Says the guy who always runs. ]

No, it most certainly does not solve anything. Perhaps it only delays the same problem for another day. And another day almost always comes. But none of this negates your work here or your good intentions in doing said work.

Yeah... I hope you're right. You never really know, huh? If what you do is really good.

[ May be thinking of something that has nothing to do with gardens. ]

Sometimes we are forced to make a choice between the lesser of two evils. Sometimes we are forced to act upon making the best of a terrible situation. And ofttimes we don't know whether a decision was good or bad until after the dust settles and we reap what we've sewn. I'm of a mind that we should always strive to do what is right, come what may.

[ Wow get out of his brain. ] Heh... I've always thought exactly that. Most people seemed t' think it was, uh... naive or stupid or somethin'. Like th' world isn't that simple.

Oh if a person thinks that a consistent attempt to do what is right is naive or simple, then they are not well acquainted with the notion themselves.

Then I hope you do continue to try. My own world has seen its air share of... history that we are by no means proud of. And while corruption will always exist in some sense, there will always be those who oppose it, those who fight for what is right and good and fair. I much prefer to be on the right side of history than the wrong, and I feel that you share that sentiment.

[ Goodness, Jean-Luc. Do you have any idea what you've just done for this kid? You practically picked him up from the gutter, brushed him off and gave him a friendly push onto the right track again. He's felt so lost and now... he feels less so. ]

...Thank you, sir. I do... an' I will, if I ever get back there. [ Swallows. ] I won't forget this.
