Day 248 - Action - Open to all
[Clinic]

Helen hadn't been around lately, so Martha had a valid excuse to avoid the clinic. And she'd been avoiding Sam, but Helen was her main excuse. Of course, she was concerned for the other woman, but she figured Helen would seek her out if she needed help. After doing a quick inventory of the place and making sure everything looked good, Martha sat behind the desk and opened her book on pathology while waiting for any patients to come in.]

[Coffee shop]

[She hadn't been planning to stop by, but the tea in the clinic was boring her and she wanted something before going to the library. The line was longer than usual, but she made it to the front soon enough. A few conversations on her way out and then she was on her way.]

[Library]

[Pathology was definitely a fascinating topic. Martha spent quite a few minutes browsing through the section before grabbing a pile of books and making her way to a table to start evaluating which ones she should take out and which could stay. She could be found with books piled around her, an open notebook, and a forgotten cup of tea.]

[OOC: Feel free to run into her wherever.]

[ helen had been in the clinic sparingly for a while there, mostly due to what had been going on with jean-luc and her inability to properly deal with that. when she did come in, she'd looked as though she'd been one step too close to losing control and so she'd buried herself in her work and stayed as buried as she possibly could be.

now, when she steps into the clinic, she looks as put-together as always, and though she's not 100% back to normal, she looks at least a little better than she did. she's still emotionally raw, made worse by the fact that she's well aware of the date and how close it is to another one she's been trying not think about, and it shows. obviously, sleep has not come easy for her and long hours have been the norm for at least a few days.

when she sees martha, after breezing into the clinic like a woman on a mission, she pauses only long enough to give a nod and a murmur of greeting -- which is odd enough, as she's normally more open and social than that -- before she's making her way to the back for something to do. paperwork. there's always paperwork. ]

[Martha nods and smiles back, and is left completely flabbergasted at the curtness of the greeting. But with how off Helen has been lately, she doesn't take it personally. In fact, she gives the woman a few minutes. She needs to get settled after all. Martha brews a pot of tea first.

Once that's done, she pours a cup for herself and one for Helen and quietly makes her way back to the office.]

Morning Helen. I brought you tea.

[ it's the offer of tea that seems to bring helen back to herself. accepting the cup, she offers an apologetic smile. ]

Thank you. There's never enough tea in the world.

[ and perhaps she can blame her shortness on the lack of tea. probably not, but she can try. ]

No, sometimes there never is.

[Martha sits at her own desk.]

How are you holding up Helen?

[Yes, she knows something is wrong. She'd rather not lose the other doctor to mental break down or something.]

[ she pauses to say that she's perfectly fine, but stops short as she realizes that no she's not perfectly fine -- she's certainly better than she was, but not yet fine -- and shakes her head with a bemused sort of smile. ]

Better. I suppose it won't do me any good to deny my state of mind, would it?

[ about as good as denying it to will and that usually didn't go well. ]

Oh, a little of this and that. [ some things that she isn't comfortable saying, since they involve a story that isn't hers to tell. ]

Yesterday was certainly the proverbial icing on the cake and I hope you weren't caught too badly with that mess. [ the pictures were not appreciated in her mind. ]

I had a few up there. Took down what I could find. Kept one copy of each for personal reasons and burnt the rest.

[Seeing Tom die had been bad. The rest were just pictures. They looked worse than they were.]

I don't see how they think any of this is going to help our "rehabilitation."

[ she doesn't appreciate being reminded of her deceased daughter, especially so close to said daughter's birthday, a day she'll likely either spend buried in her work at the clinic or with jean-luc in an attempt to blot out the memories and guilt that will be clawing its way out of her. she hasn't yet decided which option she'll go with. ]

I suspect it all has nothing to do with our rehabilitation, and they are instead pushing buttons.

[Martha takes another sip of tea.] It's not unheard of to experiment on prisoners.

Which makes it all the more distasteful that we're here at all.

[ helen just casually makes a face over the rim of her cup as she takes her own sip. this place has its advantages and disadvantages to be sure, but she will never like the wardens. ]

It's maddening how they think they can simply do things to us without expecting us to retaliate in some way. I've never seen a situation like this end well and I've seen a great many things.

[ Jean-Luc often seeks refuge in the library. The books calm him. In his time, it's difficult to find libraries that aren't entirely electronic. This library is something of a novelty, really. And he finds himself drawn to it when he needs to think.

He had just selected a hefty book of Shakespeare's work, one that had been touched by him many times in this prison, when he spotted Martha. He recognized her from the clinic, where he often went in to have tea with Helen.
] The number of books would suggest that you've delved into research over one particular topic or another.

[Martha looked up when she heard Jean-Luc's voice. He had been in and out of the clinic quite often of late. She smiled and moved some of the books aside so he could sit if he preferred.]

Afternoon Captain. I'm looking at Pathology today. There's plenty of time to learn things here.

[Her eyes land on his own hefty tome of Shakespeare and her smile widens.] I've always been partial to his Dark Lady sonnets.

Not at all.

And yes, I adore Shakespeare.

"In the old age, black was not counted fair,
or if it were, it wore not beauty's name."

He composed it for me.

[As she says it, she looks a little delighted, shy, and possibly a little disbelieving.]

I didn't realize I'd made such an impression on him until I looked up the sonnets later.

But I have found that even when those strange occurrences befall us, time continues to move on.

Oh no, there are certain spacial anomalies I have encountered in which timelines were crossed and or repeated in differing fashions. A curiosity that does warrant more investigation to understand. However, it is difficult to look too closely into such things without falling prey to them.

[ The library was a new discovery of Helena's, but certainly not an unwanted one. She'd only been in the place for several days, a new thing discovered each day, and it was the library that Helena had come to today.

She'd taken her time to look around, to see what was there, the selection, the set up of the library. For what it was, and where it was, she was impressed, and was taking her time to investigate and find something to read - and that was easy to do.

It was on her way back to a table, one book in hand, that Helena spotted the other woman, and the books that were with her. She was intrigued ]

[Martha doesn't have much to say about the first bit. Once they can solve the problem of being underwater and withstanding hte pressure, she'll be happy to assist, but so far, any research she has found has turned up nothing. Medical research is far better. As to the woman's second comment.]

Hello Helena. The prison seems to be split on opinions. Many of us feel that we definitely deserve to be here, atoning for our crimes, and then there are those who feel like they were wrongfully imprisoned.

[Not that Martha felt this was the exact place for her to be, but she did have plenty to atone for. Guilt for a false timeline still weighed on her.]

It depends on which of the long list of crimes against me you look at. Sedition sounds bad, but not so much when you're trying to bring down the power hungry alien who has already killed half the population and plans to bring down more.
