{ day 245 } open: video | action
[ it’s early— not obscenely so, but early enough that even the most diligent students probably haven’t yet made their way to the education center for piter’s lecture. he has different plans for tox today— think of it as a day off of sorts. ]

Do forgive me, but in light of recent events, I'll be forgoing a standard lecture this afternoon to address the prison at large.

[ the view is of a classroom— some may recognize it as the tox room, in fact— and of everyone’s favorite teacher sitting primly at his desk, looking down his nose into the camera. ] I realize that there are many cultures mingling in this dome of ours. Where, then, I must ask, is it customary to consume whatever one may find strewn about? [ he chuckles, elbow settling on the lacquered surface of the desk as he props his chin up on his fist. ] No stranger to hedonism am I, but senseless hedonism can so easily end in a poisoning. Are we so incapable of controlling our most base urges that we must, like caged beasts, eat whatever is tossed to us through our bars?

Now, make no mistake: your well-being is of no consequence to me. I am not your protector— simply an onlooker. [ his shoulders rise fluidly into a shrug. ] You all do make quite the fine test group, at the very least.

[ after another chilly chuckle, the feed clicks off. despite not holding a lecture today, piter is hanging out in the room he’s re-purposed for toxicology and will be slithering around the educational facility and the library for a few hours. bothering him is, as always, highly encouraged. ]

[Oh boy, this type.]

As a matter of fact, we have no other choice than to eat what we're provided. Unless you have another reasonable alternative to starvation, that is.

Oh, I am well aware, I assure you. [ if it weren't so obviously passive aggressive, his smile would look almost kindly. ] But the alternative I offer is very simple: do not engage so eagerly in the wardens' precious little tea parties.

[Kindly? Not so much. Geordi's seen more than a few snotty know-it-alls in his time.]

You might as well advise people not to eat the food anywhere in the dome, because we have no control over what might be 'poisoned' at any time. Or not to breathe the air. What you're advocating isn't informed decision-making, it's sheer paranoia.

You are incorrect. [ snottiness: intensifying. ] I advise that what is clearly out of place and has most likely been tampered with should, just perhaps, be treated with some modicum of suspicion. Do you truly insist on arguing what has twice now been proven?

Saying something doesn't necessarily prove it. [You're talking to an engineer, Mister Rude and Arrogant. They don't believe random things people just happen to say.] And what's in place or out of place is pretty much out the window when it comes to being in a completely new dimension with its own rules and standards based on the whims of the little-understood group that runs the place.

Blaming people for not predicting the wardens seems awfully high and mighty.

[ feigning the exasperation that an adult might have while explaining something to a child, piter sighs and purses his lips. ] Seems? Assign your words to me more boldly and I'll wear them. But you! You take too much interest in defending senselessness. [ he shrugs and clasps his hands. ] I'll wash my hands of it— but I will say this: all is not "out the window."

I've occupied this new dimension for more than seventy days, and there are observable patterns. Not all will notice them; not all are capable. [ however irritating that can be for him at times. he knows that his mind is different from others', but there are some things that he'd think would be far more simple for others to understand. ] I do not expect every being to take note of every detail. They cannot, and that is why I exist, high and mighty though I may be.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

THIS WILL BE FUN.

[Geordi's irritation with the jerk is derailed by the "take note of every detail" line.]

Are you an android? Or other artificial life form?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

later than late but YES GOOD.

[ piter can't keep a violent twitch of irritation from manifesting clear as day on his face: his brows draw down and his scowl nearly turns into a full-blown snarl. ]

They are toys compared to me. I am of entirely human stock.

Ah, but would it not be naive to think such things? Fools are fools, and they are everywhere. [ incredulous as he may act, none of this surprises him— there will always be someone who doesn't know better, or perhaps just doesn't care. ] Though eventually, I suspect we'll all succumb. We must never forget that we exist in a gas chamber.

Good thing some of us doesn't need to breathe then, isn't it? [ But that would be boring and he's certainly not putting it past the wardens to not have a trick or three up their sleeves. Bastards. ]

I take it you stayed well away from the nibblies, then?

I did indeed. Distrust aside, I haven't enough of a sweet-tooth for such displays to interest me. [ he takes on a feigned look of gentle reassurance. ] But fret not— I'm sure you'll have your chance to join us fragile humans in peril soon enough.

[ he turns a little dour. thanks for rubbing it in, buddy. ] Yes, I'm fully aware. [ there's even the question of whether or not they could be tampering with his spice. that notion in particular really gets at him sometimes. ] Do you propose any solution, or was that simply a friendly reminder?

Bit of both. You know what I have to offer. [ Wanna be dead like him, Piter? ]

[ to piter, even saying such a thing is a massive gesture. he knows by now what that offer entails, but he is accustomed to far different promises of death. ]

I do. [ his voice maintains its ever-present edge, but the slightest warmth creeps into it unbidden— and piter is irritated with himself for it, even if spike doesn't notice. ] But you needn't offer— at the moment, I do not intended to accept.

[ there's the slightest, tiniest uncertainty, though. not enough to make him truly consider the offer, but enough that he still feels that he must account for the possibility. ]

[ It's difficult to say what he notices — sometimes it's almost everything, others nearly nothing. If the warmth registers he sure isn't going to comment on it. It's not important. ]

Don't wait too long. It's not an instant thing, you know... whole lot of being dead before the demon takes.

[ a small part of him wants to drop the subject, but the rest of him is just too curious, too interested in the specifics of this phenomenon— its something he truly knows almost nothing about. ] And how does it "take?" For that matter, what constitutes a "whole lot?"

[ not actually gauging if this could ever be even a slightly worthy endeavor or anything. definitely not. just taking interest in his buddy's unlife. that's what friends are for, right? ]

I didn't exactly get a chance to time it, you know. [ You and your scientific methods. Bleh. ] You die, you get buried, your soul moves out, a demon moves in, you crawl out of your grave and then there's nothing but delicious blood and death and mayhem from then on until the day you get dusted.

If you want specifics, take it up with the Watchers Council.

A bold accusation! I am not so cruel, I assure you. [ he's arguably way, way worse, but hey. he just goes on smirking. ] But yes, there is a certain sweetness to being unburdened by the foolishness of others. I have myself to protect, and that is quite enough.

Did you miss the part where we're in an underwater prison? Where do you think ALL the food comes from? Unless your insides run in very different ways than mine then you're not controlling yourself either or you'd be dead by now.

Do you think me a fool? I am more than aware of what capricious masters we rely upon, but I choose not to throw myself upon every new scrap we may be offered. I do not find their picnics charming. [ his expression darkens; being misunderstood, willfully or not, irritates him almost as much as the idea of being the wardens' pet, forced once more to eat out of a master's hand like little more than a slobbering dog. ]

I'm shocked that you aren't a picnic kind of guy. But how do you even know the food was the problem? They could have released something into the air or shot us full of it while they had us out for the night. [Basically, if they want to mess with them they can.]

All my life, my purpose has been to deduce, to calculate, to analyze possibilities and outcomes— and I am not often wrong. Had it been in the air, I assuredly would have been affected. [ he lets out a brief, tense exhale. ] That you acknowledge these possibilities, however— that is wise. We forget at times, I believe, that the very air we breathe could be used against us.

[That was interesting. She didn't realize some had been unaffected. She wasn't sure she could trust Piter's deduction based on his lack of being affected, but it was worth trying to see if there was a pattern to it. She should mention it to Reid for the Investigative Team if they weren't already on the case. It was the sort of thing they should be studying at least.]

Sentience—our first warden—had a fondness for sometimes reminding us that he could strip more than our powers away. We could be left with no brainwave activity if he wanted. He didn't demonstrate it, but from what I've seen I don't think it was a bluff. [If the wardens want to screw with them, they can and there's nothing they can do—yet—to stop it.]
