[ Locked to Lacus Clyne ]

Do you have a moment?

[ Locked to Kitty Pryde. ]

Hey... we need to talk. [ Wow that sounds scary, let's defuse that. ] It's work related.

[ Open Action ]

[ Anyone keen on bumping into Reid today can easily find him at the library, the Defence Force HQ, Bean Crushers in Sector 4 or en route to any of these places or the apartment complex in Sector 2! ]

You know, we hadn't considered it, but I wouldn't rule anything out entirely. Still, I think that unless it becomes an emergency, we'd like to try and deal with it ourselves. [The Captain isn't trying to assimilate anyone so far, for example.] We've learned the hard way that going to omnipotent authorities for help has its own consequences. [May the Q experiences live forever in DNW-infamy.]

I think what's tripping me up is that this is all related to the Captain's artificial heart. He told me it was acting strangely right as the change came on. I'm pretty confident I can disrupt the signals from the implants, but I don't know what that will do to his heart.

I'm afraid I'm the wrong kind of Doctor for that sort of advice. [ And what inside knowledge he has as a Trekkie doesn't feel right to use when a mans life is hanging in the balance. How accurate is TV, after all? ]

Isn't there a clinic..? I haven't been in yet, so I don't know the level of expertize we have here.

[He nods] Neither am I, or any of us, so your opinion would be as valuable as anyone's. I was hoping the collection in this library would have something I could start with, but I haven't found anything yet.

Yeah, the clinic -- we're working with Dr. Magnus, a friend of the Captain's. She's been great, but this is understandably outside her normal practice experience.

[ He gives a thoughtful hum. This really isn't his area of expertise and it's frustrating to say the least to hear that a man he looked up to as a kid — a substitute father in some ways — may die because no one can figure out a way to fix this. ]

The human brain can survive six minutes in total cardiac arrest. Any longer than that and it begins to die from lack of oxygen, which can result in brain damage or death.

[ Not the most helpful thing, but what else can he say? ]

Six minutes... [Rather than be discouraged, Geordi seems to process this fact with a measure of hopefulness.] There's a lot we can do in six minutes, especially with Data at the controls. It's a small window, but at least we'll know the parameters.

Thanks. [A smile, genuine if a bit tired. Every bit of information helps.] I guess it's just a matter of taking some untested theory and jumping into the deep end of the pool.

Not an engineer's favorite circumstance, but I've done it before and survived.

Sometimes we don't have much of a choice... necessity is the mother of invention, after all.

[ He's done the same countless times, although not quite in this way. Still, the difference between holding someone else's life in your hands and staring down the barrel of a gun isn't that big when you're smack dab in the middle of it. ]

I couldn't have said it better. [How many times had he done something purely theoretical with the Enterprise's engines simply because it was that or be destroyed?]

I wish some others of the crew were here, but we'll just have to do it without them. Besides, Captain Picard is a fighter. You should spend some time with him when he gets back to himself. I think he'd like you.

[ Oh gosh you can't say that. No no. Not allowed. Saying things like that means he won't be able to conceal the all too happy smile that's forcing its way to the surface. ]

I, uh... I'd like that. A lot. [ Childhood hero oh god. ] Maybe, uh... maybe we can play chess while he's recovering. It's a good way to pass the time.

I'm sure he'd love that. Between him and Data, you'll have all the chess you can handle.

Actually, come to think of it... I was thinking of getting a poker game together, once things settle down. We used to play every few days back home. Do you play?

[ Such a big grin. ] I'm from Vegas, of course I play. Just let me know when and where!
