[ those who know caroline and know her well, will be able to notice the tremor in it as she comes on the comms. she's quiet and subdued. and for good reason. her best friend, her rock, the person whose friendship they just got back on track is gone. she still has bonnie and stefan, she loves them just as much, but elena is elena.]

Cheerleading practice is cancelled today. [ she's barely holding it together now.] For those who knew her.... Elena Gilbert is gone. Trust me, I've checked and doubled check. I'm sorry. [ and with that, she turns off her device before she can start to cry. chances are, if she doesn't know you, her response will be delayed by a few hours. ]

Maybe. Maybe not.

[Stefan's wondered for awhile if staying here would be better. He has Damon, Caroline. Had Elena. There was nothing else back home for him.

But maybe it's inevitable. Eventually they'll all go back, in pieces instead of together, and he's not sure what he wants anymore.

Other than this. He knows that right now, at least.

His lips press back against hers, and there's passion there, but it's born of pain instead of lust. There's a reason that people make love after funerals, so that they can lose themselves in someone else, and forget their sadness for awhile.

It feels a little like that.]

[ That's the problem. It makes Caroline feel selfish, that she doesn't want to go back, that she wants to stay here. Home is full of pain and danger. And this may be a prison but there's no Klaus, they aren't always looking over their shoulders.

Danger keeps following them everywhere except here. And for the first time she feels a little at peace, she feels like she can be normal.

She leans into him more, kissing him a little harder. That passion, born of pain, of loss, she wants nothing more than to feel the emptiness slip away in favor of something else, of something of her choosing. And most of all, she fears losing this thing, this thing with Stefan.]

[With Elena gone, who's to say that one of them wouldn't be next? All that progress, on both their parts. Would it be lost forever?

It bothered him to even think about, yet it was there in the back of his mind all the same.

And there was something else, something that was bothering him. Because there was only one other place he'd thought to come but here.

He was worried about his brother, about how he would react to this.

So, he doesn't let it go farther than this kiss, because as much as he would like to fall into bed with her and forget about everything for awhile, he can't.

He pulls away reluctantly, running his thumb over her cheek again before he puts a bit of distance between them, even if his arms are still wrapped around her.]

[ Caroline so very easily forgets that she's falling in love with a guy whose brother is kind of the worst.

Okay, so he's gotten better but there are nights when she wakes up, heart pounding as the nightmare of what he put her through repeats itself in her mind, haunts her dreams.

Still, he's Stefan's brother, the man that Elena's life, and once or twice, he'd saved her life, despite the reason behind it. So when Stefan pulls back to ask about him, she nods, her lips pressing together.] Yeah, he's... he's going to need you more than me. [ She's got her mom and Bonnie, at least. As much as she wants to keep Stefan right here with her, as much as she wants to just take comfort in his arms, she's not selfish. And a self-destructive Damon is not good for anyone.]

He's in pretty big denial.

[Damon is Damon, and Stefan is only all too aware of things that happened between him and Caroline. He's sensitive to it insomuch as he can be, but Damon will always be his brother. And his brother has tried to be better, anyone near him knows that, and Stefan knows all too well how easy it is to slip.

Stefan is just more verbal about his guilt, and Damon is terrible at apologizing.]

That's what I figured.

[Not that Caroline doesn't need him, but she's not going to go on a rampage that will get her locked up in solitary for the rest of eternity.]

How big are we talking?

[ Caroline's more the do something productive with her grief kind of girl. And while she thinks Damon might argue that going on a temper tantrum sort of rampage is plenty productive, she and him have different definitions of productive.

Stefan can trust her to manage herself even if she'd rather have him with her. She gets it. Family is family. And in Mystic Falls, you never know when you won't even have that anymore.]

Going to Sector Six to look for her sized denial.

That's about what I expected.

[At least he hadn't immediately resorted to tearing up whatever room he'd been in, or threatened anyone.

...Unless he did those things first and Stefan just didn't know yet.]

Do you think there's any chance that she is in there?

[Stefan...doubted it. It wasn't the type of place Elena would willingly go outside of certain very specific circumstances.]

	[ Damon definitely did the tearing up thing, not that Caroline or Stefan knew about it. But it's expected of him. As much as he probably didn't like to be, Damon was predictable in most ways.] I mean... no. There's no way. She wouldn't go there. Not without saying so.
