Day 242 | Criminology Class Mingle
[ ooc: A little forward dated so that this is an early evening edition of class in keeping with Eric's hours. Treat this as a mingle. Notifs are off so if you want to speak with Eric directly tag into one of his threads. I'll make him available for chit chat after class and for a Q&A]

[ Eric steps up in front of the class. He’s dressed in a grey pinstriped suit and black shirt. The collar of the shirt is open at the neck. It’s something he’d wear for one of Nan’s PR campaigns, and truthfully this feels much like one of those, with one exception: he doesn’t intend to pander to anyone. He’d gotten the impression Spencer wanted the truth, and he intends to give it to these people as well. When he’d begun discussing vampire psychology with Spencer Reid a couple of weeks ago, he’d never expected it to turn into a class. The idea of it amused him, as did the idea that he could be honest about things rather than read a script and smile charmingly until someone yelled cut. He looked out to the crowd, picking out the faces he knew then put on that oh-so-charming smile.]

Some of you know me, but I’ll introduce myself for those that don’t. I’m Eric Northman. I run the Blood Shack here in the dome and I’m a thousand year old vampire. [ Never let it said that Eric doesn’t like to be dramatic. His fangs descend at the last bit and he grins, letting everyone get a good look at them. Seconds later the fangs are gone and the charming smile is back. ]

I’m here today because Mr. Reid requested that I talk a little bit about vampire psychology. Apparently this is a topic of discussion among the Defense Force. I’d like to set some misconceptions right. I suppose, first and foremost, I should acknowledge that the bulk of my knowledge deals with vampires in my world. I realize there are different types of vampires here in the dome and there is the possibility of the psychology, as well as “the rules” [ yes, he did use air quotes] varying. That being said, I’m going to jump right in.

I believe the most interesting question Mr. Reid and I discussed that day was whether vampires could be held to the same lawful standards as human, from a psychological point of view. The simple answer is yes. As you will be able to see in a demonstration I’ll conduct in a moment, I do not turn into a raving monster around blood. I do not lose control and I don’t slaughter willy nilly. [ There’s a smirk, a look of amusement. Sookie might’ve helped him with this lecture. Willy nilly was her contribution. ]

We discussed the idea that humans are cattle to vampires and just as a human would not be held responsible for the slaughter of a cow, we should not be held responsible for the slaughter of a human. While that idea isn’t entirely wrong, [ He pauses, as if considering his next comment ] many of you are cattle as far as many of us are concerned—that idea is flawed. I’ve actual experience with actual cattle from my days as a human and I’ve yet to see cattle redeem their entire races with one action as I’ve seen the occasional humans do. Humans are capable of much more than they generally accomplish. Cattle are not.

[ He looks directly out to the crowd. ] You are food, but a few of you have the ability to be so much more. Enough about you, on to more about vampires. [ He dismisses the subject with a wave of his hand. ] People forget that vampires were human once. I had a wife, I had children, I had parents and subjects and friends and enemies. [ So yes, for any of you wondering, he is a king, or was at one point] Because we were once human, we’re like humans in some ways. There are vampires who enjoy the arts, those that enjoy being social [ He’s thinking of Caroline here ] and those of us that enjoy mayhem and murder. Yes, being a vampire does allow you to get in touch with the mayhem and murder side of things. Blood is intoxicating in a way that alcohol wishes it could be. A flood of blood is enough to make one practically giddy and to be honest, I spent my younger days knee deep in it. However, I was fortunate to have a maker that instilled humanity in me and showed me the benefit of controlling my urges. Humans are brilliant inventors. The world has come a very long way since I was human, and I’d like to enjoy those advances. Controlling my urges allows me the ability to do just that. Are there days I’d still like to kill everyone in the room? [ A smirk, a glance about the crowd and a wink]

Of course.

In short, yes, we can control ourselves and yes, control generally comes with age, but there are some of us born with extraordinary control. I need approximately two pints of blood a day. Anything more is just gluttony.

All of that being said, vampires shouldn’t be governed by humans. In my world, we have the Authority of which I happen to be a Chancellor. We deal with vampires who get out of control, lay down a series of guidelines and provide a chain of authority for vampires. We’ve got the ‘muscle’ so to speak to enforce the guidelines. Humans simply don’t have that, nor do humans garner enough respect from the vampires to enforce anything. After all, you’d hardly take orders from your hamburger. [ By the grin on his face, it’s meant to be a joke. ]

Now, I did promise you a demonstration. Once that’s over I’ll open the floor for questions. Don’t bother asking how to kill me because I won’t answer those.

[ At Eric’s cue, Sookie steps up onto the stage and takes a spot next to Eric. ]

Some of you know this is my girlfriend, Sookie Stackhouse and those of you that know Sookie are aware she’s part fairy. She’s been quite vocal about that. [ There’s a mock disapproving look at that, even though it’s not entirely mock. If Eric had his way, Sookie would tell everyone she’s a waitress. However, he also understands her desire to be accepted for what she is. After all, he’s the one standing up here telling everyone he’s a vampire]

I can assure you, her blood is a thousand times more enticing to me than any humans’ because of her fairy status. She is, for lack of a more concrete description, sunshine and freedom in a pretty blonde bottle.

[ His fangs pop out, he winds an arm around Sookie, dips his head and murmurs something incomprehensible to the crowd against her skin before plunging his fangs into her neck. ]

[ sookie's barely flinches, used to being bitten by this point. her eyes stay on the crowd, but her attention is on eric, and she's using the silence his mind provides as a means to drown out anything the audience might be thinking. ]

It might not be entirely truthful, but Eric manipulates the bond ever so slightly to make the bite more pleasurable for Sookie rather than painful. It's a much milder version of what he does on a regular basis with her. He doesn't take much; after all, that's the point here isn't. He draws back after a moment, placing a fond kiss against the bite as he pulls away. He's aware that he's exposing his biggest weakness to the entire audience right now, but he doesn't much care. He steps back, giving Sookie a chance to display that she's all right without his input. It's an attempt to show that she's not under his thrall or whatever other misconceptions people might have.

[ although still bleeding, sookie is visibly both calm and clearly in control of herself. ]

As long as the human is a willing, consenting donor, feeding from a human is perfectly legal. It's when a vampire doesn't receive consent do you run into problems.

[Eric lets his fangs down, tears open his wrist and holds it out for Sookie to take. While she's drinking from his wrist, he follows up her statement ]

Not to mention safe and depending on the vampire, pain free.

[ well, that's bold of him. sookie doesn't protest it, though, simply takes the blood that's offered. she takes only a swallow, enough to heal her, and pushes her hair out of the way to better show off her now-healed neck. ]</small>

Not even a mark.

[ He's going for a bit of shock factor (it's fun) and he's counting on the squick factor of drinking blood to stall any thoughts of using his blood to heal anyone. Eric's wrist heals almost immediately. ]

And as you can tell, I've not turned into a raging, bloodthirsty monster. I can be held accountable for my actions.

[The demonstration has more than affected the-- well, the thirstier part of the crowd. Yuuki's eyes still haven't faded from a faint, crimson red.

Honestly, she's a little horrified. Something so intimate and familiar being... s-so public. Not to mention she had been entirely unprepared for it. Licking her lips, the scent still lingers in the air. Even though she'd never touch her, he's right about one thing. Sookie's blood has always been enticing.]

I hadn't expected you to honestly do that... [Make a meal, even as a demonstration in front of everyone.] I think we get the point even without it.

[A breath as she does her best to ignore the scent the permeates the air.]

I have points I disagree with you on.

[Squick and/or shock factor aside, that was a pretty graphic demonstration, and Tieria was pretty horrified. Enough so that it actually showed a little on his face, and Tieria didn't openly wear his emotions like that often.

He does, however, manage to pull himself back together before he speaks.]

You stated that this was specifically for your world, however. So, in our case here in Marina, what you just demonstrated would only apply to those particular vampires, and not those who arrived from elsewhere.

[Just to clarify.]

Have you noticed many differences since you arrived here?

[ utterly, utterly fascinated by this lesson, piter can't keep a faint gleam from shining in his eyes. for quite a while, he has wanted to witness a feeding, and this sates that curiosity just enough. it isn't quite the natural hunt that he would like to see, but it's quite enough, and his attention is captured by every moment of it— down to eric's rapid healing.

he approaches later, after some of the crowd has dispersed.
] My, that was indeed a most... informative demonstration. [ that eric chose to display his tie to sookie, a sizable weakness, so openly is particularly striking to piter— but he presses past it, not wishing to betray too much of his fascination. ] But that has surely drawn enough attention for the moment— so tell me instead what action it is that has the capacity to redeem an entire race, as you say.

I suppose that would depend on your point of view. For me, it's those few humans that stand up for others even when they know they're outmatched. Humans are one of the only species I've ever seen do that. Of course, again, I'm limited to my world.

[The entire conversation probably started after Zero's guest lecture about vampires in Sam's class. Reid was extremely interested in the psychological aspect and it wouldn't surprise him to find out he'd sought out other vampires outside of that for feedback and information.

Marina is crawling with vampires and you're likely to have more than one or two in this class. Yuuki is a regular and Zero's been intending to start this specific class for several weeks--it just so happened that today is that day. So there is a vampire hunter in your midst.]

So the humans of your world are forced to rely entirely on the authority of a species who views them as prey. Does this Authority work in their interest and if so, what sort of rules are there to safeguard them?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]vikingly
2013-10-21 10:02 pm UTC (link)
It is in the best interest of the Authority to protect humans. Even before we were 'out of the coffin' so to speak, the Authority had a series of guidelines, rules and a hierarchy of power in place to avoid massacres and slaughters. Humans outnumber vampires in my world and a mob of them even poorly informed can do a great deal of damage. Now that we are integrated with the humans, we've come to enjoy a certain kind of lifestyle that was impossible before. We can settle down, make homes, open businesses. Very few of us are willing to sacrifice that for a night of debauchery.

Your use of the word prey is inaccurate as well. It suggest hunting and we don't. Hunt humans that is. Food is a much more accurate term.

When a vampire kills a human, and it does happen from time to time, they are brought up on charges in front of their local Sheriff. Depending on the vampire, his or her history and their circumstances they are subject to a variety of punishments from servitude to true death.

[ Of course, to a degree this is all bullshit. Yes, the measures exist and yes they are acted upon. However, killing humans, abusing them and the like happen more than even the Authority will admit. ]

And as a side note, it's not merely the humans that the Authority protects. As I mentioned, humans can be quite inventive and dangerous en masse. Of course, we turn the humans over to the proper human authorities when we find ourselves dealing with that sort of situation.

There are absolutely vampire sociopaths, which was the point of the lecture. Vampires can be classified just like humans because they were human. Some of us have more control than others, but all of them, in my world, can control themselves if they wish to do so.

Many of them slaughter for pleasure as opposed to feeding. As you saw, feeding is a very different activity.

[Lacus isn't accustomed to hiding her intentions, but today she did. She stayed in a far corner of the lecture hall, silent and unassuming. After class, she approaches the instructor, feeling somewhat confident that he won't harm her... if a little wary. The bite marks Spike left on her neck are nearly healed, but for someone searching they would still be visible. And obviously she has no way to tell if a vampire can tell a human has been bitten by some means other than visual.]

[She is wearing a rosary around her neck, which may also hint at her previous encounter with a vampire.]

Pardon me, I hope you won't mind another question. I was wondering if a human finds themselves hunted unwillingly by a vampire, if there's any way to protect themselves. I suspect not, but I thought it prudent to ask.

Of course not. [ He turns his attention to Lacus. He wouldn't have thought twice about the rosary except that he'd had the conversation with Spike a few days ago at 'therapy' about crucifixes. They don't work on him, but he knows they do on Spike. He paused, giving her question some thought. ]

You ought to let someone know. Someone who can deal with the problem appropriately.

[ A bite as old as hers, there's no way other then looking. He does give her neck some examination though upon making the connection with the rosary. Somebody has been a bad boy, although he doesn't know that it's Spike. For all he knows, there are several vampires in the dome affected by crucifixes. ]

The vampire's attention would have to be re-directed. You can attempt to keep yourself safe by traveling in groups, not inviting people in and the like. However, I do suggest you talk to the Defense Force.

that's why she agreed, because she could do something about correcting some of the misconceptions about vampires. at least, the ones from her world. many people still asked her why she wasn't tinkerbell-sized or made shoes for a living; she imagined it was ten times worse for vamps with all the contradictory, often wrong mythology circulating about them.

[Sam always attends this class, but he wasn't going to come today. He's not exactly feeling his best after hearing about Elena's departure, but when time came to go or skip, he found himself wanting the distraction.

A class about vampires—the very thing Elena had become—wasn't exactly ideal. But it brought up a lot of thoughts and feelings. Some from being a hunter who has fought against vampires and spared vampires. Some from the time a vampire in Marina attacked Sasha. And during the demonstration, some from watching the drinking of blood. It hasn't been that long since he stopped drinking demon blood to intensify powers he never wanted to have. The craving...isn't gone. He was visibly uncomfortable during the demonstration, but he also didn't look away. Once class was over he stays very still. Still, she pays attention, and when class is over she hangs back. It's what the cool kids are doing.]
