Hey. Terry McGinnis. It's been a while since I spoke up here, I think, but I've got an open-ended question.

Don't read too much into it. I'm not a super scientist or wizard or anything, so all you get for answering it is making both of us marginally less bored. But I could use a little less boredom. Sports and patrols and working out only do so much for a guy.

Anyway, here goes: Tell me about space where you're from. How many planets have people been to, what other species have you met? How long have you had faster-than-light travel?

Even if you're not from Earth. I wanna hear about alien's aliens too.

Well, that's a big question. Our ship, The Enterprise, has been all over the galaxy, more planets and systems than I can count. Our mission is exploring, after all.

But it's a little easier to answer the other part. The first human craft achieved faster-than-light speed, or Warp Drive, on April 5, 2063. I'm from the 24th century, so it's been a few hundred years since we've been out there exploring the universe. [He could go on since through a quirk of time-space he was actually there, but there's a LOT happening at the moment with the Captain so he'll keep it brief.]

Anyway, I'm the Chief Engineer on my ship and Warp Drive is one of my specialties, so if you have any questions I'd be glad to try and answer them.

2063 is almost twenty years after when I'm from. [And there's been open space travel since before he was born.] And we've had -- I mean, when you say human craft, you mean the first one that was designed without incorporating alien technologies? [Though alien technology's so inside everything already in his time he's not sure how they'd even judge that.]

Exactly. We didn't even have contact with any alien civilizations until we achieved Warp Drive, as a matter of fact. The Vulcans, the race that made first contact with the humans after the flight, followed a rule that says they won't interfere with the development of worlds until they have faster-than-light capability. The same rule we follow now.

Ever since then, though, we've learned a lot from other civilizations, from their technology and their cultures. The universe is a fascinating place.

We don't even know for sure that we're from the same version of earth, future or not. Besides, the future isn't set in stone anyway. It might change by the time my world catches up.

Yeah. Those guys.

No signs of life there? The Martians in my time are dead, but some of their stuff's still around.

We've got a handful living on Earth and a handful of humans out in space. But not much actual interstellar commerce or anything yet. We're still on baby steps.

Nope. Not beyond us.

You've got Martians, too, huh? I met someone else who actually is a Martian. Pretty cool.

Same for us. Baby steps. Though, there are a lot of humans in space. Just... not very far outside the immediate vicinity.

In my world, humans have entered the Cosmic Era of spec exploration, but so far we've only colonized within our own solar system. The space colony on which I was born is near enough to Earth to travel easily. One man did venture further out, but since then circumstances have prohibited deep space travel.

I quite miss space travel, sometimes. It's very different to be in here.

And what kind of circumstances?

Our colonies rotated at a constant rate to imitate gravity. When traveling, however, often we had to work in zero-g. It isn't so difficult once you become accustomed.

As to the concerns... the colonies went to war with Earth twice in the last few years.

Space where I'm from? That's a really, really vast question. I can start with telling you about my planet, though! It was called Alternia, and it had two moons. The sun is much more intense than Earth's, and a good deal of our population can only stand to go outside at night.

I've been to many planets and universes, though my circumstances are special and not a result of my species as a whole having the ability to travel that way.

It shocks and at times appalls, but from a perspective such as mine, Earth has long been largely irrelevant. Space is vast— more vast than many of you know, I daresay. [ a small, subtly condescending crescent of a smile appears beneath his whiteless, alien eyes. ]

I have set foot upon many planets— all made accessible, indeed, by faster-than-light travel. It has been available relative to myself for thousands of years.
