[ kelly only addresses the communication device after she's made sure it's not a bomb or rigged to send a signal to someone else or some sort of covenant communication device that's liable to go off in her face. this involves dropping it several times, even after she finally turns the damn thing on. up, down, up, down, up -- she looks frustrated, which for a spartan means she's very angry. she's trying to channel that anger into getting things done, finding out information, and generally being productive, but it's difficult when her entire body is slow and all of her senses are incredibly dulled. she feels blind, deaf, numb, and deathly slow and she does not like it at all. ]

I need to speak with whoever is in charge here. [ her voice is hard, maybe a little cold, as though she's trying her hardest to keep herself under control. ] They need to learn a lesson: if they want someone's cooperation, drugging and stripping them isn't the way to gather favor. [ she's being horribly affected by the power dampeners and it's throwing her off. ]

I don't appreciate being drugged or kidnapped [ even if that's happened to her before ] and I won't stay here. You can keep your play at prison for someone else.

[ for those watching along at home, kelly does appear human, but she's extremely muscular, looking closer to a lifelong body-builder than an actual normal person. and she's twitchy if this is anything to go by. she pauses for just a moment, hesitant to add on one more thing to her list of complaints. ]

And someone has my-- [ a pause as she debates how to address that. ] --clothes.

[ kelly takes that response and files it away, making a note that she really doesn't have to ask. she can be honest and simply talk to dr. halsey. that's good, especially in a place like this.

even with permission given, she hesitates. it's hard to admit to weakness of any kind and kelly doesn't want to admit that something is very, very wrong. ]

Someone has my armor. Are you... [ even her mind feels sluggish. she hates this. ] Is there somewhere I can meet you to talk? I think something's wrong.

[The more honest and open they are, the less likely Halsey will feel threatened if others arrive. The more likely she is to have an unflinching supporter. In her personal situation, that is invaluable. Certainly, it's a type of manipulation, but isn't that how she's always worked?]

I'm near a clothing store. Sector 4. [And she won't pry until Kelly is there in person.] I could use your assistance as well.

[ and she ends the communication to make her way to this clothing store in sector 4. catherine might expect her to be there sooner than she actually is, but it's a while before kelly can get her coordination to work well enough to get her there. by the time she's there, her calm facade is breaking. she looks perfectly normal to any civilian, maybe a little annoyed, but she's walking fine. to someone who knows spartans, and especially to someone who knows how quick and precise she normally is, she's walking extremely slowly and her movements are almost... sluggish, as though delayed between command and execution, and she looks extremely frustrated. ]

Dr. Halsey-- [ she's in the process of commenting on something else when her attention lands on the missing arm. ] Your arm... [ what happened to it? kelly had not expected that, which should solidify that she had no knowledge of the execution command. she's from much farther back than that. ]

[As she watches Kelly approach, Catherine frowns. This isn't normal, nor right. Her first assumption is that the Spartan is injured, somehow disabled, and she curses herself for not being able to assist as deftly as she might have before. But soon she sees it's not an injury, not really. A disability of some sort. Something's very wrong.

Yet there's a moment of relief that Kelly is shocked by her injury. Always a II. Forget the rest of them.]

Has been amputated. [She'd at least managed to somewhat roll up the jumpsuit's sleeve to make things more comfortable.]

Why aren't we inside Onyx?

[ this is the important question and should tell doctor halsey exactly where she's come from. it's difficult to focus on that. kelly wants to ask more, wants to know who did it, when they did it, why she wasn't aware of it until now, how it was done without her knowledge, but she recognizes those aren't the important questions. not right now. what's important is dealing with their present situation and why she feels so wrong right now. then they can worry about what happened to the doctor. ]

Doctor Halsey, something's wrong with me.

It's apparent that something is wrong.

[And now that the tense moment regarding her arm is over, she's able to turn her attention to Kelly's condition. Because right now, it doesn't matter who did it, what happened or why. What matters is that Kelly isn't at her peak performance level, and Catherine isn't confident that she can defend herself right now, should something happen. She needs Kelly. And there's some kind of temporal mixup going on, isn't there?]

We left Onyx several years ago. Rescued, in a way. I was arrested. [She'll wait for a reaction as she begins to examine the devices Kelly wears.]

Someone said this thing [ she wiggles her foot where the ankle monitor can clearly be seen and nearly falls over. ] "cuts our powers." I don't know who else has one but maybe it's responsible for how I'm feeling.

[ hold on. rescued? years? arrested? ]

We'd just been shut inside Onyx. The last thing I remember is... [ she trails off and swallows hard. this isn't the time to break training and show emotion. ] ...Lieutenant Ambrose's memorial.

[As if it's nothing whatsoever:] We were trapped for some time inside the Dyson sphere, after which point I was arrested for aiding the enemy. Apparently saving lives is a crime to ONI.

[She inspects the monitor.] It makes sense that they would limit you, though I have no idea how. Without your armor, you're already at a minor disadvantage in any combat situation. Let us hope it doesn't come to that. I would wager, based on that information, that this limits the scope and efficacy of your augmentations. Those are the only "powers" you have.

[ kelly blinks, obviously not happy with what she's hearing. aiding the enemy? dr. halsey? oni must be mad to think of that. ]

Are they mad? [ she could understand a formal reprimand for violating protocol and not going through the proper channels to get kelly out to onyx, but aiding the enemy? when had she ever done that?

she's so distracted with her anger on dr. halsey's behalf that she barely registers the doctor inspecting her monitor. ] If this is a prison like everyone seems to think, we should be safe. [ or relatively safe anyway. ] I hope it isn't a permanent drain. I can't walk straight. [ and running is right out. ]

If it's supposedly permanent... [Distracted for a moment longer. How dare they do this to Kelly?] ...I'll find a solution. I don't have the tools yet to check everything, but there's a clinic, and I can take you there. I'll look you over, check your vitals. There's nothing to be overly concerned about yet. You can walk, though not well. It's a start.

[There's concern in her eyes, and a little tiredness behind it. Nothing could be more disconcerting than one of her Spartans being disabled so easily, and with no tools with which to correct or study the situation.]

I know.

[ she knows that dr. halsey will find a way to fix it and that she can "walk." she just can't walk normally and it's bothering her. she's having to learn how to move for the fourth time in her life and she doesn't like the reason for it this time. ]

I'll follow you, ma'am. If you think I should go there, I will.

I was there a little while ago. There are other capable physicians here, and if I can't solve it alone, they will help me solve it.

[ kelly nods, taking dr. halsey's words to heart, even if her head feels like it's stuffed with cotton and bouncing around at a fraction of the speed and efficiency she normally has. ]

You always save us.

[ those words help her more than she can say. and she trusts the good doctor to always save them in the future. she is in dr. halsey's hands and that's okay with her. ]

What do we do now?

[ she meant it when she said she'd follow dr. halsey's directions. no matter what's happened in the past, dr. halsey will always be important to kelly and her orders carry as much weight as a commanding officer. right now, kelly needs the stability of a directive, a mission of some sort even if it's a tiny one, to carry out. ]

[Reaching out, she rests her hand on Kelly's shoulder. She has to make it look like this next request is no big deal.]

A favor, for me. My mobility is already restricted without the added hindrance of this jumpsuit. I'm told we can both find suitable clothing in this area. That should be simple enough to make sure you find your feet. If you're still having difficulties after that, I'll take you to the clinic.

[ like that time kelly almost died taking the fire from a hunter's plasma canon so it wouldn't touch dr. halsey. kelly remembers them well, the times they've saved each other. reasons why she could never turn against her.

she listens, nodding again, this time more sure of herself and her movements. she understands what's at stake here, what is being asked of her, and she knows she won't entrust dr. halsey to anyone else's care. ]

Understood. I've also been told we can request things. If we can't find my armor, maybe I can request it.

[ assuming either of them trusts these ai "machines," as someone else put them. she also has another question, a question about how she should let everyone here refer to her, her name or her spartan tag, but that can wait for now. ]

[She's just grateful Kelly isn't focusing on the "help me do everyday things" portion of this. But she's confident that they'll figure this out or find some sort of solution, if only because no one she's talked to or dealt with has been in some kind of unholy panic. The sky isn't falling, the world isn't ending, it's all simply very strange.]

We'll make getting your armor back our second priority. First... mobility.

[ kelly suspects that's part of it, but she knows dr. halsey isn't incapable of handling herself. this is just like a spartan readjusting to augments (or the lack thereof in this case). dr. halsey will adjust. ]

Understood. [ mobility. that means clothes. kelly turns in the direction of the store they've been standing near and squares her shoulders. she'll follow the doctor's lead on this and they can manage to get in and out easily. no problem mission. but despite the ease of this mission, kelly feels a sense of dread settling in her stomach. she pushes it away and focuses on what they're doing. ] Mobility.

[ her steps will still be measured and slow, but at least she isn't tripping over herself anymore. that's a start, isn't it? ]

Doctor Halsey... Should I act like a civilian here until I get my armor? I'm not sure the civilians here would understand what a Spartan is.

[It's not as bad as what her Spartans went through, no, though she may have some difficulty with it being older than those able-bodied young people. Catherine will adjust, however, though she'll put pride away for now and solicit the help of the only person here she knows she can trust completely. Kelly would always be on her side, wouldn't she?

But that question gives her pause. The answer depends primarily upon the threats they find themselves under, as well as the nature and dispositions of their fellow inmates. And that's the trick.

Heading toward a store, Dr. Halsey tries to seem nonchalant.]

You aren't so young that they'll question you being a soldier. No mention of being a Spartan needs to come up. The word won't mean anything to them, even if it does.

[There's a pause.] Don't think of trying to protect me, my reputation, or my involvement. But you are no civilian, and you wouldn't easily pass as one unless you devoted all your time and energy to it.

[ kelly has no reason to believe anything but the best of dr. halsey and even if she were to learn something else, dr. halsey was the closest thing to a parental figure that kelly had. she had put her own life in jeopardy to save dr. halsey's and she would do it again in a heartbeat. despite being kidnapped twice before, once as a child likely on the doctor's orders and once by the doctor herself, kelly still trusted dr. halsey. that would likely never change. ]

Understood. [ it would be weird to be known as kelly to people who weren't spartans, but she could deal. she understands why and that's why she asked. but there's one more think that bothers her. ]

Doctor, I won't let anyone threaten you here. [ difficulty walking or not, she'd would do her damnedest to make sure she could protect dr. halsey physically should anything happen to threaten her life. spartans might be important to the war at home, but to kelly's way of thinking, the doctor's knowledge and capabilities were just as important.

and that has nothing to do with her personal feelings. nope. ]

Who's going to threaten me? [Bitterness abounds. As far as she knows, those who would harm her (again) aren't here, and are possibly far removed. SHe's found no criteria for anyone being here other than "crimes", and god knows the parties responsible for hunting her down are criminals more than Kelly is. Should Jul 'Mdama's group show up, well... She'd find a way to make Kelly a fully functional Spartan again.

Well, she'll do that anyway.

But it's going to be strange if Kelly does go by her name, rather than her designation or rank. SHe's half hoping the Spartan doesn't get so informal with people, not yet. Halsey just wants to settle in for a while first. But that decision is best left to Kelly herself.]

We'll both be enigmas for a while.

[ kelly doesn't remember dr. halsey being this bitter. sure she'd been through a lot lately and being ordered around on onyx hadn't really helped, but kelly hadn't seen any reason that would make her like this. then again, apparently years had passed and something had happened to the doctor's arm, so maybe those incidents were connected. either way, kelly doesn't hold it against dr. halsey and instead nods again, making another internal vow to get herself back into tip top shape as soon as possible. she doesn't like being so vulnerable. ]

Yes, ma'am. I was also told there are apartments to claim if we need somewhere to stay.

Then we should find one--or two, if you'd prefer your privacy.

[And Halsey is bitter for reasons this Kelly doesn't need to know. Not yet. There will be a time, and then there will be words, lots of them, but not until they're settled in properly.]

We'll need to gather supplies. While we're finding clothing, we can scout for that, find some bags, perhaps.

One will be easier to locate than two. [ what is privacy anyway, especially after spending so much time trapped inside that tunnel system on reach. they don't even really need separate bedrooms. kelly honestly does not care. whatever will make the doctor happiest. ]

Understood. I'll hold onto what we find. [ and not because of the one-arm thing, but because she's legitimately stronger and can carry more anyway. she's the logical choice here. ]
