237 - Self-acceptance group mingle
[ The Accept Yourself Support Group is told to report to one of the rooms in the Sector 4 art center. The room is cosy and warmly lit with a bunch of plush armchairs set in a circle around a low table. On the table is a basket full of photographs, a stack of handheld mirrors and a card with the instructions. The photographs are all of inanimate objects, abstract patterns or landscapes, buildings or nature. ]

• Find a photograph that you feel represents you as a person. Take turns in the group to explain why you've chosen that card.

• Look at yourself in the mirror for five minutes. Take turns in the group to explain what it is you see in your reflection.

• Discuss why you see yourself this way. Discuss how you see those around you. Discuss the differences. Discuss how you can be more honest with yourself and your potential.

[ For those that are not yet ready to get going on the activities, there's plenty of delicious snacks and refreshing drinks available, as well as soothing music to ease the awkwardness. Let the self-examination begin! ]

[That is kind of deep. And disturbing.] You do know that tornados only really cause as much damage as they do because humans built cities on their home turf, right? It's not like they exist to ruin things. They just...exist.

And even when I'm not trying to fuck everyone's lives up, even when I'm trying to help, I make things worse anyway. Thanks for improving the analogy.

[Complex much, there, man?]

The point was, usually it's people who put themselves in the situation knowing the risks that causes the problem, not the tornado for daring to exist. You don't ruin lives by existing, it when two incompatible things end up butting heads or a new element is added that isn't needed. Conflict breeds conflict.

[ Ohhh yeah. ]

Great. So the metaphor's flawed. No analogy is going to be perfect, Mr. Internet.

[Oh look, he's not eye-rolling. He does believe Dirk has a problem and isn't going to mock him or anything for it. Not that it's easy, Richie doesn't really like it when people think everything revolves around them.]

Look at it this way, if conflict is there, it means there's more going on than one person coming in to smash everything up. Tornados don't make themselves. There's an entire shift in air currents, temperatures, and lots of other factors that go into it. If you change those currents a bit though...no tornado. Just have to figure out what's the big factor that needs changing. Or through another tornado at it to cancel it out, but really, not as easy as it sounds.

[ A sigh. Dirk pinches the bridge of his nose.

If he could get past thinking everything revolved around him, it would be easier to realize that his shitty behavioral patterns aren't set in stone. But hey. It's Dirk. ]

Okay, the tornado metaphor isn't working. Metaphors are stupid anyway.
