237 - Self-acceptance group mingle
[ The Accept Yourself Support Group is told to report to one of the rooms in the Sector 4 art center. The room is cosy and warmly lit with a bunch of plush armchairs set in a circle around a low table. On the table is a basket full of photographs, a stack of handheld mirrors and a card with the instructions. The photographs are all of inanimate objects, abstract patterns or landscapes, buildings or nature. ]

• Find a photograph that you feel represents you as a person. Take turns in the group to explain why you've chosen that card.

• Look at yourself in the mirror for five minutes. Take turns in the group to explain what it is you see in your reflection.

• Discuss why you see yourself this way. Discuss how you see those around you. Discuss the differences. Discuss how you can be more honest with yourself and your potential.

[ For those that are not yet ready to get going on the activities, there's plenty of delicious snacks and refreshing drinks available, as well as soothing music to ease the awkwardness. Let the self-examination begin! ]

Sure, why not. [ Is she being sarcastic? WHO CARES, HE'S DRUGGED. ] I'm genetically hardwired to physically and psychologically abuse everyone I care about, and I'm too self-righteous to stop. See, even though I am actually enumerating my issues here and now, I'm not gonna quit doing 'em, because that's just how much of a piece of shit I am.

That was fun. Your turn.

I was raised in a family of criminals. My Dad taught me to fight—really fight—when I was a kid. [And this is coming from a 15 year old.] My mom was crippled and got sent to prison and my sister abandoned me. Now I fight against my family, and I kept that a secret from my teammates.

[If she hadn't had that danish earlier that would have been a much different response.]

What makes you think it's genetic? Just because your parents do something doesn't mean you have to. [See also the story from above. Of course she is often AFRAID that is what it means or that it's how people will look at her no matter how she acts.]

Oh, man, sounds like you're living it up.

[ He chewed on a cookie while listening to her. Welp. ]

Ain't got parents. What I do got is an alternate universe version of myself as an adult who's just as terrible as I am despite having been socialized in a radically different environment.

[Beware the munchies.]

So instead of learning from his mistakes you're just going to decide it's inevitable?

I was pretty much already deciding that. Meeting him was the final nail in the coffin.

Seriously? You're not even going to try to do better? You're just giving up on your life?

[ Shrug.

He doesn't really know what to say. He's given it the best shot he knows how. ]

That's all you've got to say for yourself? [Because, clearly, you need to answer to Artemis about your life choices.]

Don't know what else to say that I haven't already said.

[ And because he's currently therapy-drugged, that isn't an avoidance tactic; it's the truth. ]

Well, it's weak. [And that isn't therapy-drugged truth. That's just Artemis-truth. She folds her arms and looks away for a minute.] People have to be able to change those things. [She has to be able to so you do too, Dirk.]

Yeah. Swell. [A little on edge.] I want out of here. This group and definitely this prison.

Now there's something we can agree on.

[ He glances around the group. Doesn't appear to be any escape from the touchy feely ~talk about yourself~ atmosphere. Ugh. ]

Not sure there's a whole lot of point in continuing to try, but hey. Everyone needs a goal.

Yeah... Goals are how you keep moving in the right direction. [Become a hero. Not a villain. Simple goal, right?]

Anyway, I guess I should go mingle with the other prisoners. [Feeling more imprisoned right now than usual in their underwater jailhouse.] Good luck with...you know. [Everything? Your life? Being doomed?]
