237 - Self-acceptance group mingle
[ The Accept Yourself Support Group is told to report to one of the rooms in the Sector 4 art center. The room is cosy and warmly lit with a bunch of plush armchairs set in a circle around a low table. On the table is a basket full of photographs, a stack of handheld mirrors and a card with the instructions. The photographs are all of inanimate objects, abstract patterns or landscapes, buildings or nature. ]

• Find a photograph that you feel represents you as a person. Take turns in the group to explain why you've chosen that card.

• Look at yourself in the mirror for five minutes. Take turns in the group to explain what it is you see in your reflection.

• Discuss why you see yourself this way. Discuss how you see those around you. Discuss the differences. Discuss how you can be more honest with yourself and your potential.

[ For those that are not yet ready to get going on the activities, there's plenty of delicious snacks and refreshing drinks available, as well as soothing music to ease the awkwardness. Let the self-examination begin! ]

Oh... [Well, that was blunt. She wasn't quite so far gone with what she had eaten yet. This was her first group and she writes it off to being his personality]

I'm... I'm sorry to hear that.

Eh. Nothing you could do about it, anyway. I'm hopeless.

Oh, I'm sure you aren't hopeless. Maybe just understanding more how it makes your friends feel.

I understand perfectly.

Oh... Is there a reason why?

Control issues. I'm probably a sociopath to some degree.

Oh. Well, at least you know that. They do say that's the first step.

I wonder... what it would be like to not worry if others found out...

[More just a thought, but its slowly starting to work on her]

Oh, no, I definitely worry.

So you don't want other to know you are like this?

Well, it'd be nice to assume they'd have the self-preservation skills to stay the fuck away from me if they knew the full extent of it, but the people who actually matter can't have gone this long without noticing something was up. So I don't really know.

It could be possible that they want to help you if you know it is a problem and they can see it too. But at the same, it would be a problem if you don't want to hurt them. So... it's hard to say.

Idiots. [ They shouldn't put up with him. God. ]

But hey, I don't recall sending you an invitation to my pity party. [ Yet another reason he's such a piece of shit! ] You got anything you want to get off your chest?

No, I don't think so. I mean I don't really have much of an issue. I just hope that people would accept me for who I am.

Most people hope that. Nothing special there.

Well, I've already had people reject me for something I can't possibly change. It's hard... hearing someone doesn't like you because of who you physically are and not something that could be fixed.

What kind of thing that you can't change? Are we talking like taste in ice cream, sexual orientation, or megalomaniacal psychopathy?

No none of those! [She sounds a bit surprised at the options presented]

Well... I'm not... not human.

[Almost waiting for a response to that before she says anything else]

I grew up on a planet where the dominant species wasn't human. Somehow I think I can cope.

Oh... [Hearing that kind of made things easier. She knew not everyone here was human, but she was used to the idea of humans being the majority at least]

Well, I'm actually from a planet called Mars. I've been on Earth for a few months now so I've been trying to blend in with them.

No, in my world, there's a large number of Martians who live there. For the most part, we don't make ourselves known. Well, my uncle does.

Considering how brutal humanity's been over the course of history: Good plan.

So you're afraid people would hate you for being Martian.

It is. I've seen it far too much for my own taste.

I am. I... I don't want to hear rejection again for something I can't change.
