237 | Avoidance Group* Therapy Mingle
(*Also known under the snappy alternative name "If I ignore my problems, maybe they'll go away" Group.)

[In the usually so quiet library where we lay our scene, things are a little less quiet and a little less library-like, given that today it's full of bots, a few tables with neat little trays full of assorted snacks, and - of course - therapy subjects in varying states of willingness.

The robots, true to form, don't bother anyone who doesn't try to leave. Those who do try will have their path brusquely cut off and their attention directed to a whiteboard at the far end of the room - it's mostly empty, with plenty of room for writing, except for one sentence in the middle of the board, written in red: "Admitting to one's problems opens doors." Is that an attempt at an inspirational message, or meant to be taken literally? We just don't know.

There's also a table just beneath the whiteboard with little stacks of cards with suggested discussion topics (with instructions to work in pairs or smaller groups, taking turns to answer the questions).]

• Share one of your ambitions. What are actions you have taken in order to fulfill it? Are there more things you could do? Give suggestions on more ways of working towards your goals.

• Share one of your fears. What are actions you have taken in order to stop it from coming through? Are there actions you have actively avoided taking? Does the group have any fears in common?

• Are there certain tasks, responsibilities or situations you often find yourself avoiding in everyday life? If yes, how do you get out of them? Is there an alternative approach? Give and compare examples, discuss reasons.

• Is there something currently worrying you? If so, what? If your fears were to be realised, what is the worst-case scenario for it? Is there a best-case scenario? Brainstorm possible ways of solving the situation.

• What is one difficult situation you have experienced recently? How did you deal with it?

• Share one achievement you feel proud of having accomplished.

[There are also a number of scenarios along the lines of "You have a work assignment due tomorrow, but a friend calls you inviting you to a night out. What do you do?" as well ask the questions that can be found scrolling down this site. Feel free to make up your own!]

You know, I used to think that.

Then I kind of got to a point where if I kept running and running and running... people started getting hurt really badly. [People actually died. By the thousands. Bart's not saying that out loud.] So if I can help it, I don't... exactly want trainwrecks anymore.

If yer nephew or whatever he is gets seriously hurt by you kissin' someone who ain't yer future wife back home... then there's bigger problems.

So he's a bit mad at you for a few days an' then things right themselves.

[Because this is sound advice.]

I'm just saying, I'd rather talk to him before I start a relationship with her. It'd at least make me feel better.

[If Wally disapproves, then yeah, Bart's gonna sneak around, but at least he TRIED.] Things'll only work themselves out if we help ourselves, you know? We can't hope someone'll fix things for us.

[Mal shrugs.]

Don't let the guilt kill you if it doesn't go yer way.

You're talking to me, man. I won't let something like that take me down.

But you know, you should take some of your own advice sometime. It might "open doors" where you don't expect 'em.

What? Go flirt with random women? Ain't found one I liked yet.

[Yes he'll play intentionally stupid.]

No, you dork. You should go out there and seize the day. If you can't date the girl - or guy - you like, then make the most of your time here. You're only in prison once, you know?

[HE HOPES. Because dear god, this isn't the first prison he's been in, and he really wants it to be the last.]

You really just call me a dork?

And I am making the most of my time. They's got horses that need lookin' after. You saw that right? Rode one with me an ever'thing.

[It's a term of affection! Bart shrugs sheepishly, though he doesn't bother to apologize. Yet.]

I saw. It's not one of your "ambitions" or whatever they're calling it on the cards, though, is it? [He's genuinely curious. If it turns out that Mal is that passionate about horses, Bart'll stop.]

My ship ain't here.

[That was his ambition. Continue flying. Staying free. No one had any right to control him but himself. And that wasn't possible at the moment.]

Riiiiiight. [Bart's face turns red, though he tries to hide it by burying his face in his hands.] Sorry, man. I completely forgot. I guess I was more preoccupied that night by making sure you were okay.

[This isn't fun anymore. Mal's face hardens.]

Yeah well, I'm shiny. Ain't nothin' wrong other'n I'm stuck without a ship. No therapy can help me get that back.

What does shiny even mean? [His curiosity is finally getting the better of him.] I know you're not literally shining, so does it mean "fine" or "fantastic?"

Shiny means... shiny. Depends on the context.

[He's not an English teacher Bart!]

It's just something we say in my time. Means a whole ton of different things dependin' on the situation.

So you just have to take it in context? [He can roll with that.] Got it---

Wait. Your time?

My time.

[Mal has talked to enough people to understand that most don't come from his time but from some distant past. Back when Earth-that-was still existed.]

2517.

[Cue the low whistle.] That's insane. It's only 2012 where I'm from - and even then, some worlds're so different it's hard to believe I'm from the same era as most people.

I'm learnin' most of you are from Earth-that-was. Early 21st century. Still haven't used up the planet yet.

That actually happens? [Sure, he's heard of the possibility in school. Doesn't mean he believed it.] So that's how you have your ship, right? It's a... a spaceship, then?

[All this time, he just assumed Mal was a sea pirate. This kind of explains a lot.]

At some point sure. Long before me though. Don't right know when.

[He looks amused when Bart asks if he lives on a spaceship.]

Course she's a spaceship. What other ship would I live on?

I don't know, a water ship? You said you were a pirate, and you had a crew and a ship, so I figured you sailed the seven seas or something.

[Mal's amusement just makes Bart's confusion even more profound. People explore space like pirates explored the seas? ... Eh, technology changes with time.]

The seven seas?

[Mal's not laughing at you Bart. Well, maybe a little. He's laughing at the whole idea.]

Most places don't have enough water to sail a boat on. Not one that'd keep em free. Something could get 'em way to quickly.

Really? The Earth isn't 60% water anymore? [He might be taking this literally.] Or do you mean the governments can keep an eye on them that easily?
