237 | Avoidance Group* Therapy Mingle
(*Also known under the snappy alternative name "If I ignore my problems, maybe they'll go away" Group.)

[In the usually so quiet library where we lay our scene, things are a little less quiet and a little less library-like, given that today it's full of bots, a few tables with neat little trays full of assorted snacks, and - of course - therapy subjects in varying states of willingness.

The robots, true to form, don't bother anyone who doesn't try to leave. Those who do try will have their path brusquely cut off and their attention directed to a whiteboard at the far end of the room - it's mostly empty, with plenty of room for writing, except for one sentence in the middle of the board, written in red: "Admitting to one's problems opens doors." Is that an attempt at an inspirational message, or meant to be taken literally? We just don't know.

There's also a table just beneath the whiteboard with little stacks of cards with suggested discussion topics (with instructions to work in pairs or smaller groups, taking turns to answer the questions).]

• Share one of your ambitions. What are actions you have taken in order to fulfill it? Are there more things you could do? Give suggestions on more ways of working towards your goals.

• Share one of your fears. What are actions you have taken in order to stop it from coming through? Are there actions you have actively avoided taking? Does the group have any fears in common?

• Are there certain tasks, responsibilities or situations you often find yourself avoiding in everyday life? If yes, how do you get out of them? Is there an alternative approach? Give and compare examples, discuss reasons.

• Is there something currently worrying you? If so, what? If your fears were to be realised, what is the worst-case scenario for it? Is there a best-case scenario? Brainstorm possible ways of solving the situation.

• What is one difficult situation you have experienced recently? How did you deal with it?

• Share one achievement you feel proud of having accomplished.

[There are also a number of scenarios along the lines of "You have a work assignment due tomorrow, but a friend calls you inviting you to a night out. What do you do?" as well ask the questions that can be found scrolling down this site. Feel free to make up your own!]

First-time goer? Some of us could've told you as much. [Being a veteran at Marina therapy sessions himself, Puck just allowed himself to be shepherded without (outward) protests.] But far be it from me to deny anyone the pleasure of first-hand knowledge.

Seriously? How many sessions have there been? [Bart knew this place wanted to act as a rehab center, but he didn't think group therapy was part of the deal.]

This would be the second one I've had the honour of partaking in. There might've been others. [He shrugs.] They're good for making friends. Cute and ultimately harmless.

I think we've got slightly different definitions of harmless, bro. [Still, it does get a laugh out of Bart.] I'm Bart, by the way.

[Well, he's still working under the assumption that he can be as avoidant as he likes in his answers.]

Puck, [he says, putting a hand to his chest.] Pleasure's all mine. Can I assume you're done with the escape attempts for now, or are you going for seconds?

Puck? Nice name.["Like a hockey puck?"

Someone kind of fell asleep through high school English.]
Hey, you never know. I might even go for thirds if I'm feeling especially sadistic.

Why thank you. I like it, too. ["I've ignored hockey puck references since the invention of hockey pucks; I can ignore implied references too".]

You're sure that's not "masochistic"? Maybe the robots are more frustrated by the would-be-escapees than they let on. [Which would justify they use of "sadistic".]

Masochistic, sadistic, it kind of all ends up in the same world of pain. [It really would, but again, Bart did sleep through most of high school English.] You're probably right, though. It'd explain how one little robot can move at the friggin' speed of light.

I'm sure they could, given the right incentive. Unless that was meant literally? [People and their various powers, after all. You never know.]

It's very literal. That thing moves faster than I do! [How it moves faster, Bart doesn't want to find out.]

Really? [He turns so he's facing Bart fully, a definite spark of interest in his tone now.] How's that, currently in slo-mo mode?

How do I move fast? I'unno, I just kinda woke up like this one day. [He actually got struck by lightning, but details.] If you meant the bot, though, I really don't know.
