[Day 237] Relationship Issues Group Therapy mingle
[The relationships group therapy attendees will all get a message telling them to report to The Winery in Sector 2. Sadly for them the alcohol is locked away, but there is an assortment of food and non-alcoholic beverages along the bar for consumption. Many of the tables have been cleared out and the chairs rearranged into a circle with booths along the edges for more intimate therapeutic discussions.

And don't forget the party favors! The wardens have left some helpful games and activity ideas to get them started. There's a bowl full of folded slips of papers with various questions.]

How many people have you slept with? Do you regret any of them? Why?

How many relationships have you been in? Why do you think that is?

What was your longest relationship? Most serious? Shortest? Most casual?

Why did your last relationship end?

What do you look for in another person?

Are you happy?

Who is your ideal mate?

What was the biggest problem/complication in your previous or current relationship?

What do you need out of a relationship? Sexual experience?

How long have you been single between relationships? Why do you think it was so long/short?

What is the best way to break up with someone?

Do you believe in soul mates? Do you think you have or will meet yours?

Would you rather spend your life with one important person or several acquaintances? Why?

Are there any similarities between the people you've been with? If so, what are they?

Do you have trouble making choices? Give examples.

Do you think with your heart, your head, or your genitalia? Are you satisfied with this behavior?

Do you have trouble relating to people? If so, in what way?

[In addition to the questions there are cards with various prompts. One explains the game, I Never. Another suggests people pair off and roleplay they are in a relationship and then deal with various scenarios like what do to if one partner flirts with someone else or comes home late without calling.]

Who should do the dishes?

When is it appropriate to discuss getting blue bands/having sex?

When should you move in together if ever?

What do you do if you suspect the other is keeping secrets?

What do you say if your partner comes home with a haircut you don't like?

How do you respond if you find your partner crying?

How do you decide how to spend your time together?

Your partner's family doesn't like you. What do you do?

One of you is critically hurt. How does the other respond?

Your friends don't like the person you're with. What do you say to them? What do you say to your partner?

One of you wants sexual relations and the other does not. How do you balance your needs?

How do you communicate your desire for a particular sexual desire to your partner?

It is your partner's birthday. How do you prepare?

At a party your partner leaves you to socialize with others. How does this make you feel and how do you respond?

How do you show your affection?

(OOC: Mingle style. You are not limited to the questions, scenarios, or games listed above. Assume there are more! I recycled a lot of this from last time so if someone was in this group twice they can feel free to notice, but assume there are lots of questions and prompts, so they probably didn't see them all.)

[Martha had been watching both Ianto and Jack for a while now. She was trying not to listen, but things were heated and now Ianto looks beyond upset, and Jack is freaking out and... she finally steps forward.]

Jack? ... Ianto?

[He can see the tears rolling down Ianto’s face and he feels utterly wretched because he knows this is completely his fault. Not his death – though honestly? He feels pretty damn responsible for that anyway – but him knowing about it, him having to find out this way? That’s down to him, and he’s regretting every second of it.

He’s so focussed on Ianto that he doesn’t even notice Martha coming over till she speaks. He stares at her, remembering that she doesn’t know either, yet, and the idea of the sheer effort involved in telling her, too, is exhausting enough to overcome the unnatural desire to get the revelation off his chest. So he just stares at her, arms dropping wearily to his sides.]

This fucking therapy has a lot to answer for.

[It comes out as a snarl but it’s clear the anger’s not directed at Martha. It’s equally clear, however, that he’s not going to come clean about this unless she asks him directly. If she does, of course, then he’s going to be bound to answer.]

((OOC: I had a great long response to this typed out and then my fucking work computer network (which is completely up the creek) went and lost it! Arghhhh!!))

[Ianto nods miserably, choking out in a quiet, lost sort of voice that Martha is easily close enough to hear,] I don't want to die.

[And maybe its the simple act of actually voicing that fear but suddenly he can't bear to be so far away from Jack and stumbles those last few steps forward into his arms. He's sobbing, loud and ugly and so hard he can't breath and he can't tell if its that or fear that's making him shake so hard.]

[Martha starts to answer Jack's statement, but then Ianto chokes out his revelation and suddenly it all becomes clear. Well, clearish. Martha doesn't know what happened, but obviously Ianto dies in the future. And Jack, being Jack, doesn't.]

[She watches Ianto stumble into Jack's arms, and, aware of the scene this is causing, turns her back on them so she can start waving other people away. In fact, she fixed the room with a glare strong enough to make people back off. Ianto and Jack needed some time; Martha would make sure they got it.]

[This is pretty much breaking his heart. He collects Ianto into his arms as he stumbles forwards, pulling him close and wrapping around him, trying to calm the tremors he can feel running right through him.]

I know. [Whispering.] I know. I’m so sorry. I didn’t want you to find out like this. I didn’t want you to find out at all.

[He casts Martha a grateful glance, but doesn’t say anything out loud for fear of drawing Ianto’s attention to the potential onlookers who’re being kept away by her fierce glare.]

[Ianto is well past caring about or even really being aware of their audience. He hasn't even really noticed Martha's presence, so he can't shoot her the grateful look she deserves for being such a good friend.]

[He's already regretting the harsh words he'd flung at Jack, because he knows he hadn't deserved them, but he can't stop long enough to catch his breath and say that. Instead he just nods in agreement and clings to him like he's drowning, as if he's the only thing keeping him standing and grounded when it feels like his world is ending. It occurs to him for the first time that Jack looses him, too, that all this ends so much sooner than he ever thought it would. He tries not to think about what Owen said about death, and how there's nothing but darkness. He can't decide if he wants to know how much the way he's going to die hurts.]

[She nods to Jack when he throws her the glance. Martha knows she's saying too much, and she figures if she stays here as an unobtrusive guard for Jack and Ianto, then she won't have to say anything to anyone else. It's a win-win situation in this joke of all jokes the wardens have thrown at them.]

[And maybe if she stays close enough, she can find out more. She's an excellent eavesdropper after all.]

[Jack doesn't blame him for the accusations. He did keep secrets, for right or for wrong, and it's got to be hell to find out like this. He's just glad Ianto's come back to him now, that he can hold him tight as if that'll stop him ever being torn away from him.

Gently, he gets his back against the wall and slowly starts to slide them down it. His legs are feeling trembly enough; heaven knows what Ianto's feel like!

And all the time, he's gabbling away with soft nonsense words as the tears roll down his cheeks.]
Shhh, it's all right now, everything's all right, I'm here, I'm here and you're not going anywhere, not while I have any say in things, because I love you, Ianto Jones, I love you and I am not losing you again.

[...Okay, maybe it's not quite all nonsense.]

[Ianto lets Jack pull him down until with him until they're huddled in the corner together, practically in his lap. He's still crying but it's becoming quieter although he still feels just as helplessly terrified. He's shivering harder than ever, even with those arms around him, and his head hurts from sobbing. Jack's shirt is soggy where he's been crying on it and he wipes at it futilely with one hand.]

[He's hearing the words without really listening to them, letting Jack's voice wash over him. But suddenly they start clicking, and he realizes what he's saying, words he never thought he was ever going to hear from Jack, and long ago given up on hoping for. He peels his face away from the damp blue cotton of Jack's shoulder, and stares at him, eyes red and wet and slightly stunned looking. His mouth opens and closes a few times before he's finally able to make his voice work.]

Could you say that last bit again?

[His arms come round Ianto even more strongly when Ianto starts trying to fuss about his shirt, curling round him protectively, demonstrating that he's fine, that it's Ianto he's concerned about, not his stupid shirt.

Even when he feels Ianto start to try and pull away to stare at him, his arms try to tighten, but then slip loose once he realises what Ianto's trying to do. He doesn't get why Ianto's staring, though, not until he speaks, and then it's his own turn to gawp. If he could stare at himself, he'd be doing it.]

I... [Okay, that just kind of slipped out, didn't it! Huh. He does the goldfish impression for a moment longer, and then it turns into a sheepish little smile. He lets out a breath, and the smile turns warmer, affectionate as he finally says it again, somehow both experimental and sure at the same time.]

I love you.

[Ianto is still staring like an idiot. If there's one thing that could get the tears to (mostly) stop its this. It might be rather insulting to see how shocked he is, but he's still so emotionally raw he can't do anything to hide it. He's always just accepted that when it comes to love their relationship is always going to be a bit one-sided because that's just how Jack is. He's always known he cares, but he just assumed they were always going to leave it at that. He's always planned on taking the words I love you to the grave, and wonders with a horrible sort of shock if maybe he did.]

I wish I didn't have to die for you to realize that. [Its not accusatory or angry, just very wistful and sad, because right now he feels like he's never going to be able to feel anything else again. He wants so badly to return that shaky smile but he can't seem to make himself and he hopes Jack can understand that. He leans his forehead against his, still trying to catch his breath from earlier, before whispering, so very tiny and far away,] I love you, too.

[Oops. Now she's heard too much. Things she didn't necessarily want to hear. And there's the hole in her heart, tearing open just a little bit more. The scene they had been causing is over. Everyone else seems to have stopped caring. Martha's role as privacy guard is unneeded.]

[She glances back, and that brief moment is enough to tell her everything she needs to know. She swallows back the pain of seeing them so... complete... and turns back to the room. It's time for more tea. And maybe her own corner of the room where she can hold up a wall and avoid everyone.]

[Jack doesn’t blame him for being shocked. He’s pretty shocked himself. Not at the sentiment, exactly, (he’s self-aware enough to know how he feels about Ianto) but at the fact he’s actually let it out. Perhaps, as well as the wardens’ tinkering today, it’s because he didn’t say it last time. Ianto’s completely right, in a way. He’s got his second chance, and he’s doing everything he can to make sure he gets it right second time around.]

I wish that too. [He’s still smiling, gently, really not worried that Ianto can’t manage a smile back yet. His hand rubs soothingly up and down Ianto’s back.] You wouldn’t believe how many times since that day I’ve wished it had all gone differently.

Did you save the world? [Ianto asks with a watery sniff, starting to finally get his tears under control even if emotionally he's still a wreck. His head is pounding from sobbing so hard, and he leans froward against Jack again, head finding his shoulder once more. The hands on his back feel good, at least, but he wishes all this could have happened differently. What is he supposed to do now that he knows this?]</font?

[There’s a second’s hesitation before he answers, but he’s still finding it impossible not to answer direct questions.] Yes. But it didn’t really feel much like a victory. I got rid of the aliens and managed to save most of the children, but I’d lost you, and the Hub and everything in it, and Steven and Alice. [Forgetting for a moment that Ianto doesn’t even know Steven and Alice exist, let alone what happened to them.]

It really wasn’t what I’d class as one of my best days ever.

{Ianto wants to know more, but at the same time he's far too frightened to ask. When they get home, when he feels safer and less emotionally vulnerable he will, but right now he's worried the details will make him start panicking all over again and he's only just gotten himself under some semblance of control.]

Can we stay here forever? [Its a stupid, childish, selfish wish and he can only whisper it. But he doesn't die in this place, and here in this dome Jack loves him and they have a place they think of as home and he's safe, like its some stupid, sad little fairy tale.]

[He grins fiercely against Ianto's hair.]

We could grow old together, here. Well. You know what I mean.

[Saying they could stay together here for the rest of Ianto's natural life after which Jack would have to lose him all over again isn't quite so romantic, after all.

He squeezes Ianto again, and realises Martha has left them. He feels a small pang as he wonders what she made of all that, but he has very little attention left for anyone who's not Ianto right now.]

Actually, in some ways, I'd be happy to tay here for quite some time. It's not like I was actually doing anything with my time, out there, and I like the people here.

I know what you mean. [And they both know it won't happen, not really, so it doesn't matter. No matter how long they stay here Jack is always going to have watched him die, and now he's always going to know that happens.]

Do you think we can leave? The therapy, I mean. I need... I don't know, I need to not be trying to deal with this here. [He feels like he wants to hide.]

[He glances round. He's normally fine with doing almost anything in public, but right now he wants to get away almost as desperately as Ianto does. Perhaps a part of that is that he wants to shield Ianto from others' scrutiny.

To his relief, the room definitely seems emptier than it was at first, so he assumes the bots are starting to let people leave if they feel they've done enough 'sharing'. And he feels like he's done way more than his share of sharing!]

We can try, at least. Come on.

[Ianto is fine to stand and walk on his own but he clings to Jack anyway because he can't let him go right now. He feels like if he looses that contact he'll just drift away into nothing and cease to exist. He isn't paying much attention to the room and has no idea who is still here or who has left. They don't seem to have a problem getting out though, which is a relief. He can't deal with being in that room any longer.]

Thank you for trying to protect me by not telling me. I'm sorry for what I said.

[The clinging is absolutely fine because there's no way in hell Jack's letting go of him either. It leaves them staggering out of the Winery looking as if they've been consuming its usual fare rather than just coffee and pastries, but Jack really couldn't care less. All he cares about is getting Ianto home, where he can hold him in comfort. He doesn't plan on really letting go of him much for probably the rest of the day.]

Don't worry about it. [Little bit gruff.] I don't think anyone could blame you for reacting like that. I wish - fuck, I wish I hadn't had to tell you!
