[Day 237] Relationship Issues Group Therapy mingle
[The relationships group therapy attendees will all get a message telling them to report to The Winery in Sector 2. Sadly for them the alcohol is locked away, but there is an assortment of food and non-alcoholic beverages along the bar for consumption. Many of the tables have been cleared out and the chairs rearranged into a circle with booths along the edges for more intimate therapeutic discussions.

And don't forget the party favors! The wardens have left some helpful games and activity ideas to get them started. There's a bowl full of folded slips of papers with various questions.]

How many people have you slept with? Do you regret any of them? Why?

How many relationships have you been in? Why do you think that is?

What was your longest relationship? Most serious? Shortest? Most casual?

Why did your last relationship end?

What do you look for in another person?

Are you happy?

Who is your ideal mate?

What was the biggest problem/complication in your previous or current relationship?

What do you need out of a relationship? Sexual experience?

How long have you been single between relationships? Why do you think it was so long/short?

What is the best way to break up with someone?

Do you believe in soul mates? Do you think you have or will meet yours?

Would you rather spend your life with one important person or several acquaintances? Why?

Are there any similarities between the people you've been with? If so, what are they?

Do you have trouble making choices? Give examples.

Do you think with your heart, your head, or your genitalia? Are you satisfied with this behavior?

Do you have trouble relating to people? If so, in what way?

[In addition to the questions there are cards with various prompts. One explains the game, I Never. Another suggests people pair off and roleplay they are in a relationship and then deal with various scenarios like what do to if one partner flirts with someone else or comes home late without calling.]

Who should do the dishes?

When is it appropriate to discuss getting blue bands/having sex?

When should you move in together if ever?

What do you do if you suspect the other is keeping secrets?

What do you say if your partner comes home with a haircut you don't like?

How do you respond if you find your partner crying?

How do you decide how to spend your time together?

Your partner's family doesn't like you. What do you do?

One of you is critically hurt. How does the other respond?

Your friends don't like the person you're with. What do you say to them? What do you say to your partner?

One of you wants sexual relations and the other does not. How do you balance your needs?

How do you communicate your desire for a particular sexual desire to your partner?

It is your partner's birthday. How do you prepare?

At a party your partner leaves you to socialize with others. How does this make you feel and how do you respond?

How do you show your affection?

(OOC: Mingle style. You are not limited to the questions, scenarios, or games listed above. Assume there are more! I recycled a lot of this from last time so if someone was in this group twice they can feel free to notice, but assume there are lots of questions and prompts, so they probably didn't see them all.)

[ While she is subdued, he is still very uptight. Rigid and tense. He exhales a breath that he's been holding for too long. He kept doing that throughout watching this entire thing unfold, taking a deep breath and holding it, as if that would keep him from saying anything he didn't want to say.

He tilts his head, an ironic grin barely there on his lips.
] Oh, Helen. I would have much preferred to have met with you in any other location but here amid this mockery of counsel.

[ in true helen magnus form, she's trying to ignore it all, even if she agrees. ] I had thought it might be taken the wrong way if I escaped without at least greeting you. But if you'd prefer, I could return to my place and meet you somewhere else. We could pretend this never happened.

[ she's teasing him, offering a joking sort of smirk, small though it is, in an effort to banish some of the tension they're both feeling. she much preferred having whatever it was in the clinic between them, rather than the walls she can feel forming around them both now. ]

[ He understands that she's teasing. And while he's tempted to play into the teasing by asking that they pretend this never happened, he also does not enjoy parting with her company. Ever.

He softens just a bit, gesturing to the empty chair next to him.
] Please, join me. Perhaps we could feign participation.

[ she hesitates for a moment before smoothing her black pencil skirt and taking the offered seat. she absolutely doesn't mind staying near him, despite where they currently are and what's happening around them. being in his company might make this whole mess a little more bearable.

glancing at him for a moment, she eventually leans over towards him. on the pretext of brushing non-existent dust off his shoulder and arm, she murmurs something to him, something she wants only him to hear. ]

I'll answer some of these for you at a later date. [ that isn't just whatever's in the food. she knows she needs to eventually tell jean-luc about john and james. perhaps questions like this would help in a more controlled and less public venue. ] I owe you that much.

[ her gaze, as she pulls back, flicks down towards his mouth for the barest second, but in the interest of keeping their collective dignity intact, she doesn't follow through. instead, she returns her gaze to his eyes -- which, she has found, are both extremely lovely and quite expressive -- and settles in her seat. she might be leaning a little more towards him as she crosses her legs and rests her hands in her lap, more for the ease of conversation than any desire to be close to him. or so she's telling herself. ]

[ He can't help but lean in ever so slightly when she leans toward him. She's touching him, after all, even under the guise of an act so commonplace and unassuming. And yet it was Helen and it seemed as if everything in regard to her was something more. He couldn't explain it, really. Or perhaps he wasn't ready to.

He glanced at where her fingers had swiped at the shoulder of his uniform top and then up into her eyes where his own gaze settled, where he said things that he would not say aloud. His body was itching to reach out and touch and move closer, yet he was more disciplined that than, especially in such a setting as this.
]

Likewise. Although I would be remiss to omit an admission to having been watching you, to catching a few of your conversations throughout this session. [ A look of amusement crosses his features and he leans back, sitting up straight and crossing one leg over the other, looking every bit the Captain even as he teases her, his tone of voice making his teasing air even more obvious. ] Which I must say puts me at a slight advantage, Doctor Magnus.

[ incredible self-discipline is yet another thing they have in common. helen is currently resisting the urge to place her hand either on his knee or on his arm. or perhaps on one of his hands. but the last thing they need is to act overly obvious before they've even had a chance to discuss things between themselves. her eyes meet his for a moment; hers are perhaps too blue for her hair color and she's honestly waiting for that question, especially after james' inquiry on it.

at jean-luc's teasing, however, helen laughs, an honest and very warm sound coming from her as her body rocks slightly from it. her cheeks flush at his admission, to the knowledge that he had overheard some of her conversations and likely even caught the looks she'd been throwing him. she ducks her head for a brief moment, her grin easy to see on her face. ]

Only a slight advantage? For shame, Captain. I thought you would have picked up on more than that. [ like her discussion / lecture with buffy. nikola would have a field day with the knowledge that she got schooled on love by buffy the vampire slayer. good thing he isn't here. jean-luc is quite handsome, she decides, especially when he's got his captain's aura up. helen herself is sliding back into a more victorian fashion: teasing the man she likes to show him, rather than actually saying it, and she appears less uptight and worried than she normally would. that may also have something to do with the spiked tea she was drinking earlier. who knows. ]

[ He's so glad that she plays along with his teasing in such an awkward situation. Honestly, the fact that she does makes him appreciate her even more than he already does. ] Oh Doctor, I would never reveal my full hand in a topic of such significance as yourself.

[ she's very, very good at bantering like this, preferring it to a lot of other types of conversation. her smirk widens and she turns towards him in interest, as though they're playing a game and she's trying to figure out if he's bluffing or not. ]

Had I known we were playing poker, I would have thought to hide the deck.

[ she's also very good at hiding significant meaning inside a rather mundane topic. in this case, had she been thinking straight or known he was listening, she would have made a better effort not to say too much. but it is what it is and she'll be interested to see what he makes of the little hints she's dropped today. ]

[ That gets a small grin out of him. And it's also an opening for a safer topic than the one at hand. He easily steps right into the easier topic. ]

My first officer used to hold weekly poker games in his quarters. I never joined in with them for years. Only recently did I get past the idea that as Captain I should keep a certain distance... between myself and my crew.

[ she gives another warm laugh, soft and gentle but well-intentioned. ]

I would imagine your crew didn't mind getting to know you better. [ she certainly hasn't minded the chance, but she isn't and never was part of his "crew." ] I haven't played poker in decades. At least not the card game. My poker face is quite good, as I've had to use it for many other encounters.

Unbeknownst to myself, they seemed to have already grown to know and respect me whether I wanted them to or not. It seems that good people have a way of doing that, working their way past all the walls a person might put up. [ It was true. They all knew him far more than he had thought he had allowed. But then they were all spectacular human beings, so he supposed he may have unwittingly allowed them in. ]

[ But he also can't help but smile a bit at the idea of Helen using that poker face in other encounters rather than in the game. They were similar in so many respects. And this one is just another to add to the list. ] Yes, I can see that in you. The trick lies in knowing when to go all in and when to fold. But I'll be the first to admit that in my time in Starfleet I've garnered a reputation for being a bit -- cocky. [ He had very recently, where he is from, rammed his entire ship, which was already shieldless and in dire straits, into another in a stare down that he had refused to back down from. ]

Sounds a bit like my staff. We've all worked our way into each other's good graces, whether or not the invitation was given. [ funny how someone who had been almost directly involved in ashley's death had come to be such an important part of helen's sanctuary that her life had felt empty without her. she missed kate. funny also to think that jean-luc's words now could also be applied to the two of them, how they had grown to know and respect each other so quickly, working their way past the other's barriers, coming to care for each other despite their own difficulties.

her expression softens a bit as she watches him, fondness tainting her gaze as she shifts to more fully face him. ]
Absolutely. One must always know the difference and be able to recognize when the stakes are too high and when they aren't high enough. At times, risking it all is the only way to find out.

[ as she had done the other night when she had thrown caution to the wind and kissed him. if they were anywhere else but this place with so many people to watch, she would be so very tempted to kiss him again. their shared embrace had been nice, something she never would have received from anyone else. ]

I'm rather not well-liked by the world's governments at the moment. These days they tend to see me and my work as a barrier they need to cross. The last time one of their representatives decided to play poker with me, he lost in a brilliant display, though I don't think he quite realizes just how badly he lost.

[ Yes, his words did have a double-entendre between himself and his crew and himself and Helen. And the pointed look he had given her as he'd said them had shown that he had intended them as such. He is equally fond of her, obvious in the way he leans in just a bit as they talk, in the way he absorbs every word she says. He finds her so uniquely interesting even in an abnormal setting such as this. ]

I have found that there are times that being disliked by a certain faction of people gives me an intense satisfaction. Perhaps, Helen, such perception means that you are doing something right.

In my case, it meant freedom. [ freedom in a sense that she hasn't yet explained to him. freedom, meaning she no longer had to listen to the world's governments about her abnormals and the sanctuary business. of course, it would mean a great deal of trouble, she's certain, but with her plans in the works, it will be a very good thing in the long run. ]

Though I suppose have a point. It was intensely satisfying to tell Addison to leave the premises or I'd arrange for him to be eaten.

[ though she's trying to hide a grin at this point, she's actually quite serious. she did, in all honesty, threaten the man with that, but she'd had her reasons. addison never could have understood what the sanctuary was and stood for. if he had attempted to take over, he would have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of her work and if one of the difficult choices cropped up, she doubted he could have made the right decision. ]

There is indeed. [ her voice and expression are entirely teasing with that, as though she knows she's being a tease. he likely wants to know the story and she's willing to tell him the full thing... just not here. however, she can give him a taste. ]

It's too long a story for the moment [ her eyes also say that it's a story she doesn't want to tell here. ] but suffice it to say that the United Nations sent in a representative a few weeks ago, just prior to my arrival here. They felt that my work wasn't going in the direction they wanted and Addison was sent to pry a story out of two of us. He treated us as though we would lie to him and once he made his ruling against us, I told him to get out. He didn't seem to take it very well.

[ she doesn't seem particularly bothered by this, though, and there's more to the story than what she's saying. a lot more. for now, her gaze is only for him, her eyes saying that she will give him the full story another day. ]

[ Having faced numerous intergalactic governing factions, Jean-Luc could understand the intricacies of the sort of situation she was hinting at. The Prime Directive aside, there was always the push and pull, give and take, proverbial chess pieces moving on a board that came with any diplomatic negotiations or military council. He could also understand the irritation that came when things didn't lean in his favor. ]

Yes, that does indeed sound like a story that I hope to someday hear the entirety of. I thought of attempting to negotiate my way out of this, but then thought it better to pick my battles and meet halfway if just in attendance.

[ she'd had a feeling he would be able to understand what she meant, the choice she'd been faced with during that situation, and she's fairly certain he'll understand the full story when she finally gives it. there's far more to it than just addison's inspection. there was also the fact that she and will had been lying to him, to intentionally make him wary of them. her poker face is quite good indeed.

she doesn't respond to his comment about the story. by now he should know quite well that she's willing to tell him the entirety of it later. so instead of saying anything immediately, she reaches across the short distance between them and gently rests a hand on his arm. her touch is meant to be brief, so as not to be overly obvious in a setting such as this, particularly when they have yet to discuss whatever emotions lie between them. ]

I'm rather glad you decided to come. [ otherwise they wouldn't be having this conversation and she has to admit that his presence here has made the entire event more bearable on the whole. ] Otherwise I might have to hunt you down to ask if your offer of going out to tea is still open, either later today or another day when we haven't been subjected to all of this nonsense.

Of course. I would be happy to rearrange my routine for tea with you. How about the day after? Then we can be certain the hype from all of this will have worn off.

[ and then she can answer some of the questions this whole mess more than likely brought up. ]
