Class 005 : Day 234 : Demons : Crossroads Deals
[Sam Winchester is a tall man under any circumstances, but he might seem just a little extra tall while he's standing for the lecture and everyone else is seated. It's probably less imposing since he is wearing plaid though. It's hard to be imposing in plaid.]

Overview : Demons

Demons are humans who've had their humanity stripped away from their time in hell under prolonged and extensive torture. [There is something heavy in his tone. After all, his brother has been through that torture and Sam is set to put himself through the same when he gets back.] When demons appear outside of hell they are usually in the form of black smoke unless they have possessed a human body. When they take possession they look just like that person and have access to all their memories. A body with a demon inside can take a lot of physical punishment, but only as long as the demon is still with them. Once they possess a new body the former one suffers from every bit of damage that might have been inflicted if they're even still alive. If they do live through a possession they'll remember everything that happened. While possessed sometimes the person's eyes will change color, revealing the demon inside.

There are several different types of demons. Today, we're going to talk about Crossroads Demons and their deals. Unlike other demons, they have red eyes. They're also the ones who make deals for your soul. They're named crossroads demons because you can summon them at a place where roads cross. [But, no, he is not going to go over exactly how to summon them.]

[ DEMONS ]

Topic : Crossroads Demons/Deals

Once summoned they can make set up contracts with humans. Maybe wealth or fame or improved health. They can do a lot and it comes true. The only draw back is that when the time is up they get your soul which means death and a one-way trip to hell. The deals are something you have to agree to and seal with a kiss. After that, it's just a matter of waiting. There aren't a lot of ways to get out of them. You might be able to renegotiate, but the house always wins. [You know, unless you're a Winchester.]

[ CROSSROADS ]

Practical : Defense of Hell hounds

When time is up the hell hounds come for you to enforce the price. They're vicious, powerful demonic dogs, who are invisible until you're close to death. Once they're after you, they don't give up until they kill you and drag your soul back to hell. You can delay them with protection barriers of salt or goofer dust. Killing them is not easy especially if you can't see them. Salt and iron are both effective. If you've got something that can kill a demon it should have some effect on the hellhounds.

[ HELLHOUNDS ]

Case Study : Evan Hudson

We met up with a man once named Evan Hudson who didn't do his own summoning. Someone else had opened the door and he walked through it to save his wife from cancer. His time was up and the hellhounds were close. We were able to summon the crossroads demon who made the deal with him. We caught her in a Devil's Trap which is a lesson for another day, but basically, when a demon is inside a particular symbol, they can't leave it.

[He's just going to skip over a lot of details about his father that this case brings up for him. No need to go into any of that.]

Then while I evaded hellhounds with Evan Dean started exorcising the demon. That means taking the demon out of the human host and sending it back to hell. She didn't want that, so she agreed to release his soul. It worked out for him, but that isn't usually the way.

The best way to keep yourself from the wrong end of a crossroads deal is to never make one.

[ EVAN HUDSON ]

Questions & Discussion

Okay, so, has anyone had this happen in their world? Any questions about it? And, if you want, you can talk about what sort of thing might tempt you to make a deal. Just be really careful you don't kiss anyone afterward.

(OOC: Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail, but feel free to bring more into it. He will have additional demon lectures though, so he wouldn't have gone into detail or given multiple case studies. Backdated to class time.)

Several. Lots of Supernatural types. Humans too though. I don't discriminate unless there's obvious evil, you know?

[ Because there's the destroy the world and everyone in it types too. ] Lots of gray area. Sometimes I wish this class would cover a little more of the gray.

I know. Humans are definitely capable of committing evil acts and I wouldn't argue against that.

[ Dawn's attitude was refreshing and over time, Bonnie had began to realise that she could adopt it for herself. ]

Don't see why it couldn't discuss topics like that. Maybe you should suggest it to Sam?

I might. It's a touchy subject for some people... which I totally get.

[ Especially when people have been through so much because of the Supernatural. She was getting the idea that he had been through a lot. Which, so had she, they just handled it differently. ]

So is that why the interest in this class? Cause there are vampires and werewolves and ghosts and stuff in your world? I mean, are you involved in things of the wacky and weird where you're from?

Me too. It's not to be taken lightly.

[ Bonnie hadn't really asked Sam much about his experiences but she had assumed that they were bad. Much like other people in the prison. ]

I'm a witch. Inherited through my family line and it stretches back a lot of years. Centuries. Where I'm from, witches are responsible for the balance of nature, good and evil, you know. Vampires, werewolves and ghosts just came along with that.

[ This is Dawn looking WAY too excited about this information. ]

Ohmigosh, that is so cool! One of my sister's best friends and... vicariously mine, it a mega witch. Like... super powerful and stuff. I can do a few things but nothing huge like her. I mean sometimes she can just think it and will it into existence with a few words of a spell or incantation.

[ Fine by Bonnie as she'd rather have someone who was receptive to the reveal that she was a witch. ]

She must be really powerful if she's capable of doing that. I'm not even close to that kind of magic as I have to use spells and objects to channel with. I can also channel the power of other witches, increasing the effectiveness of my magic.

What can you do?

Oh, I'm like that, like I need ingredients and spells to work with. And I'm nowhere near practicing. I only really dabble when I feel like I need to.

[ Once, Giles has pondered over the idea that Dawn might have an affinity to magic because of her own creation, because of what she was. But Dawn has never tested that theory beyond using spells out of necessity. ] And you said it runs in your family? That probably boosts your power too.

Even dabbling is doing something but as far as I'm aware in my world, you are born a witch or warlock. I've learned a lot from my Grams and other magic users like me.

[Unfortunately, her grandmother wasn't around anymore and that had been a devastating loss to Bonnie because of what she had taught her and how she raised her too.]

Yep. My Grams and my mom are both witches. Don't know if it boosts my power but it's nice to have people close to you who understand what's going on.

So what do you use your magic for? World saving shenanigans or glamour spells? A little of both? A lot of both? Do you have a coven?

[ Okay Dawn, enough questions. ]

More like town saving. Not on a world scale nor do I wanna be. I've used tracking spells, finding where someone is. A more fun one is lighting up candles all at once.

Ohmigosh. Town saving is totally legit too. My sister didn't even branch out of Sunnydale until she had to crater it in the name of world saving.

[ But she realizes how that sounds, so... ] It's probably good to point out that most of the people were out of the town when there was cratering.

[ And then... ] Can you teach me the candle light-y thing? Only probably smaller scale like... candle in the singular and not plural.

Good, because I was just about to ask if people were still around when the crater happened. [ It reassures her quite a lot to hear that.]

The lighting a candle thing is probably the only spell I could teach you. My magic isn't exactly strong at the moment and I've been trying to get it back to what it was.

Oh, no... Buffy's about saving innocent people. She's the good kind of Superhero who thinks that kind of stuff through. [ If it sounds like she's proud of her sister, she is. But a lot of this she wouldn't tell her sister to her face unless the situation were dire. Like Buffy needs that kind of ego boost. Psshh... ]

But really, that'd be awesome to learn. I know that if you have an affinity to magic sometimes you can do the simple things just by saying the words.

Superhero? Does she have any special abilities? [ A beat. ] Sorry, that might sound like a redundant question to ask.

[ Bonnie was definitely getting the impression that Dawn had a ton of respect for her sister and rightly so because of what Buffy did. Anyone who risked their life for others was deserving of praise. ]

Mh hm. When I first started I had to read from a book but now I can recite spells from memory. Maybe by teaching you, I can help myself.

Oh yeah, she's good at everything. Like super strength and super speed and super agility. But just watch her try to beat me at Scrabble or get through an entire book. I win at those things.

[ Yep. Definitely sisters. Dawn is smiling brightly though, really very excited about the prospect of learning a new spell. Bonnie sort of reminds her of Willow, even in temperament. ] I'm really looking forward to it in a trying not to say let's do it right now during this class kind of way.

Looking forward to it as well. As fun as it would be to do something like this in class, I don't think the teacher would appreciate it too much.

[ She can't help but smile at the thought of them disrupting the class with it though. ]

Besides, it's better to be somewhere a lot quieter.
