Day 233 Video and Action
[Open Video]

[Mal's wearing a cowboy hat and, though he looks a bit hung over, he's also grinning. Every once in a while, there's a whicker that sounds like a horse, and a horse's mane invades the video.]

Did ya'll know we had horses here?

[Private to Bart]

Bart? Suppose I should thank you fer findin' me yesterday.

[That's the closest he'll get to an apology.]

[Open Action]

Mal's pretty ecstatic to find the horses. He wasn't so happy about jumping through the hoops to get the license to be allowed to ride the horses, but any annoyance fled once he saddled one up and took her out. The mare ran quickly and he almost forgot his discomfort of the water as he rode along the beach. Anyone could encounter him either on horseback or later finishing up his ride and taking care of the horse after.

Oh, you know, I was in the neighborhood. [Not really. Nowhere in this dome's far for him, though.

Bart nods in agreement, starting to head back towards the stables.]
You'll get me a docile one, right? Not one of those more... hyperactive ones?

Right...

[Mal gives him a curious look, but then Bart asks about the horses.]

Course I'll find a docile one. I may be a mean old man, but I ain't stupid.

I wasn't saying you were. I've just... I don't think I've ever properly rode a horse before. [In other words, he's as nervous as all-get-out.]

[Mal dismounts from his own horse and leads her to the trough. Then he sizes up Bart. He nods once and hands the boy a sugar cube.]

Come on. Let's find you a horse.

[Once inside, he walks down the center aisle until he finds the perfect horse. The one who's still and ain't reacting all that much.]

There ya go. Hold out yer hand... say hello.

[He accepts the sugar cube, holding it carefully in the palm of his hand as he follows Mal down the center aisle.

The second they stop in front of the horse, Bart cautiously holds out his hand.]
Um, hi. Nice horsie... steady horsie...

[It's comical how nervous Bart is around the horses. Mal stifles a chuckle as Bart holds out his hand, calling the animal "horsie."]

[The horse in question steps forward and sniffs at Bart's hand before gently taking the sugar cube.]

See? It ain't so bad.

[Its tongue tickles! Bart bites his lip, but he's unable to hide his smile.] This isn't bad.

I still haven't gotten on it, you know.

Then let's get her saddled up.

[Mal finds the proper equipment and hands it to Bart, giving him directions on how to properly saddle a horse.]

[Bart nods, listening to those instructions as if they were a life-or-death matter. Still, he needs help as he saddles the mare, occasionally asking "is this right?" before he finishes saddling the horse.

Once he's done, he takes a deep breath before getting on. Somehow, he doesn't trip over his own two feet in the process.]

[Mal watches and smiles once Bart gets up on the horse. Mal swings into his own saddle and gently kicks his mare to get her moving.]

Your's will start followin' mine naturally. Just give her a gentle kick to speed up if you want.

Slow's fine. [For once! Everything - even cars and ships - move slower than him, so he's perfectly okay with the thrilling speed of a slow horse.

After a moment, though, he leans forward and gives the horse a very, very gentle kick. The horse moves a bit faster, but for Bart, it feels like he's riding a snail.]

And if you'd like, we can bring them to a jog.

[Mal kicks his horse into the faster setting.]

Course an all out run is always fun... provided we've enough space.

[Bart doesn't like the idea, but when in Rome...!] You don't think we've got enough space here?

[It's an honest question. Bart can run in the tiniest of spaces, but he hadn't thought about it much regarding other animals.]

["No."]

Why not? It could be fun.

[Mal looks over and grins.] Right then. Follow me.

[He kicks the horse into a gallop and lets out a whoop of something akin to joy.]

[Funny, Bart's cry of surprise and possibly fear is almost akin to Mal's joy.

Which is probably a good thing, considering Bart's horse isn't going super fast. It's not the speed that bugs him so much as the (seeming) total lack of control. He follows Mal, but he's clinging to the horse the entire darn time.]

[Mal simply looks thrilled. It's not until he looks back and sees Bart holding on for dear life and looking terrified that he slows his horse down. As he slows, he leans over and reaches for the reins of Barth's horse as well.]

Woah girl!

[His voice is calm as he gets the horses to a more manageable pace.]

Sorry kid, you shoulda told me you weren't so into goin' that fast.

[He's still clinging to the horse, even though it's more than slowed down to something akin to a snail (in Bart's mind).

Glancing up at Mal, he shakes his head.]
Nuh-uh. This speed's cruise control for me - and if I don't get over my fear now, when am I ever going to?

[Mal shakes his head.]

Well cruise control, let's go at a jog then. Don't hold on with a death grip, all it does is make the horse nervous. They's prey animals, an' they can read our emotions. Stay confident. C'mon.

[He clicks his tongue and brings his own horse into a jog.]
