[ Although the other day was far from as traumatic as the last inmate influx, it left Reid a little pensive. Made him think of extreme aggressors, of 50 000 chess games, of expecting different outcomes in a game that would only end with check mate, but unlike a few years ago this is not a depressive thought. Instead, it makes him crave interaction and so he hits up the network. ]

Hey, guys. I was wondering... there's quite a few of us here that know how to play chess. How would you feel about an impromptu tournament? Nothing fancy, just... I don't know, anyone who's interested could drop by the library and we'll set up a few games. Bring a board, if you got one.

[ A bit of an awkward smile and then he cuts the feed. ]

(( OOC: MINGLE-STYLE! Email notifs are off, so thread to your hearts content! Reid will have a video response thread here and an action response thread here for your Reid-y needs! ))

[ That's very telling. Don't think you're not being profiled right now. You are. ]

Depends on what you're interested in doing, I suppose... there's always the school or taking up employment... the Defense Force eats up a lot of time. There's also the arcade, movie theater, gym... I'm pretty sure some of the inmates have set up a garden together.

Not exactly an abundance of what you'd call meaningful activities, but there's plenty to do if you just make the effort.

[At the moment he's paying more attention to the conversation than the game, so don't expect him to notice.]

That's the second time I've heard this Defense Force mentioned. Just what is it, if you don't mind me asking?

The library is more my style, to be honest. All this technology these people seem to have can't really compete as far as I'm concerned.

[ He smiles easily at the comment about the library — a man of his own heart. ]

The Defense Force is an organization primarily dedicated to keeping the population safe from each other and whatever the Wardens throw at us. We also have an Investigative Team — I'm the temporary leader, actually. We, uh... we collect, process and interpret data about the prison itself, the Wardens, the Engineers... whatever we can find that might bring us a clue to how they brought us here and if it's possible to reverse the process.

Are you interested in joining?

[He laughs at the offer, dark and amused all at once.]

Forgive me, puppy. It's a very noble effort, and you have my complete support but frankly I rather doubt any of your other members would want me there.

[ He makes a face at the "puppy" comment — where did that come from — but opts to pass it over for now. ]

What makes you say that?

[The endearments and pet names are pure habit at this point, but in his opinion at his age he's allowed to get away with a few quirks.]

Tell me, young man, does my name have any meaning in your world?

It has some connotations, but I try not to draw any premature conclusions.

You may be the first person I've met here to take such a sensible approach. Thank you. Although I hate to say it but so far most other worlds have had an unfortunately accurate depiction of just what I am.

[ Little smile. ] I can't really afford that kind of prejudice in my line of work. [ Although, now he has to ask... ]

Is, uhm... is there a story behind the name?

Is that so? And just what do you do for a living, if you don't mind my asking?

I'm the High Lord of Hell, among other things. There are lots of stories attached to my name.

I'm a criminal profiler with the FBI — the Behavioral Analysis Unit, to be precise. [ Not that it's important right now. ] Wait... the High Lord of Hell?

Now to me that sounds like quite an interesting occupation. You help to understand criminals, am I correct?

Yes. [Not bragging, just simple and to the point.] You can perhaps see why some people might be a bit nervous around me.

That's right. Actually, uh... I teach a class in criminology here. [ Normally he'd ramble on and on about his work — the thing he's really confident about — but that won't happen just yet. ]

And I can certainly understand that... there are a lot of misconceptions within religion. [ Gosh, okay where to start. ] Judeo-Christian?

What? [Utter puzzlement.]

I'll take that as a no. [ Little smile. ] Is there a name for the religion in which you figure as the devil?

I'm sorry, young man, I'm afraid I'm not following any of this. Religion? Devil? Neither of those are words that have any meaning to me.

Really? That's interesting. So these prejudices about what you are... where do they come from?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]thehighlord

Because I'm very old and very powerful and I try not to involve myself in the affairs if the living if I can help it. I've also done more than my share of terrible things, and all that tends to add up to someone a lot of people are afraid of. And from what I've gathered from other prisoners here, it's a reputation that carries across worlds.

[ He winces slightly. ] Yeah, uhm... you have a harsher reputation than you might think, at least with the people that come from worlds similar to my own.

Would you care to enlighten me? So far all I've gotten is vague and frightened reactions - which, I'll admit is hardly unusual - but no real answers.

Sure, I could uh... I could try and fill in the blanks. It's going to take a while though. [ So if you don't want to do it right now, now would be the time to say so. ]

[Dry amusement.] I'm 50,000 years old, Mr. Reid. I suspect we may have different views on what it means to take awhile. Why don't you do your best to keep it brief, and I'll clarify any similarities or differences.

[ To be perfectly honest, he was more concerned with whether or not they should stay here or go someplace else or maybe divide it up or something. They both have lives. His also happens to be mortal, but... alright. If anyone can talk forever, it's Reid. ]

Satan is a character appearing in the texts of the Abrahamic religions, personifying evil and temptation, and is known as the deceiver that leads humanity astray. The term is often applied to an angel who fell out of favor with God, seducing humanity into the ways of sin, and who now rules over the fallen world.

Satan is primarily understood as an "accuser" or "adversary" in the Hebrew Bible, and is not necessarily the personification of evil that he would become in later Abrahamic religions. In the New Testament, Satan is a name that refers to a decidedly malevolent entity (devil) who possesses demonic god-like qualities. In Theistic Satanism, Satan is considered a positive force and deity who is either worshipped or revered. In LaVeyan Satanism, Satan is regarded as holding virtuous characteristics.

[Well that explains some of the reactions he has gotten here, Saetan reflects sadly. It's hard hearing some things that sound almost true being twisted like that.]

Hell wasn't any kind of punishment for me. Where I come from, Blood access our power. Through Jewels. The darker they are the more power a person has access to, with Black being the darkest and most rare. I've only known three other people besides myself to wear them in all my long life, and they offer an immense source of magical power. Until my son, I was the only male ever to wear them, certainly the only male to be a Black Widow or rule a territory. I can say without bragging that I am quite unique, and I felt I had a responsibility to do something with my life as a result. Hell is a shadow realm, without much comfort and I thought the souls there deserved someone to look out for them, so I walked in while I was still alive and assumed control. I don't lie or lead astray any more than the next person, and I only punish those who truly deserve it.

[ For someone who relies so heavily on facts, Reid does understand that you can never rely on them as perfect truths. Certainly not with religion and even less so here where the truth shifts violently from individual to individual. This is curious though. A rare opportunity. ]

Black widow? What does that entail?
