[ Although the other day was far from as traumatic as the last inmate influx, it left Reid a little pensive. Made him think of extreme aggressors, of 50 000 chess games, of expecting different outcomes in a game that would only end with check mate, but unlike a few years ago this is not a depressive thought. Instead, it makes him crave interaction and so he hits up the network. ]

Hey, guys. I was wondering... there's quite a few of us here that know how to play chess. How would you feel about an impromptu tournament? Nothing fancy, just... I don't know, anyone who's interested could drop by the library and we'll set up a few games. Bring a board, if you got one.

[ A bit of an awkward smile and then he cuts the feed. ]

(( OOC: MINGLE-STYLE! Email notifs are off, so thread to your hearts content! Reid will have a video response thread here and an action response thread here for your Reid-y needs! ))

[ He's been around mutants a long time now. Unusual appearances still surprise him from time to time, but it passes just as quickly. There is no weirdness here! ]

Alright. [ Setting up his pieces. ] Have you played before?

[Her awkwardness springs eternal, not staunched by his calmer demeanour. She hopes she'll ease into things once the game starts proper.]

[The question does make her smile beneath the fabric of her scarf, though.]

I've played it my entire life, actually.

That makes two of us. [ Smile! ] This should be interesting.

I hope so! I've only played with my "brother," and he isn't very patient with more complex strategies. I more than likely have some catching up to do.

[The stress starts melting away as her hand hovers over the board, and she glances up at Reid to make sure he's ready to begin.]

That's alright. How about we take it easy over the first game, get a chance to feel each other out? It's just for fun. [ A nod. Go ahead. ]

If that's what you'd prefer! [Then she makes her move, decisively and readily.]

[Her voice takes on a hint of sly playfulness.]

Intense competition doesn't equate to an unfun experience for me, though.

[ Whoa, such sass! ]

Well, in that case there's no reason to take it easy on you. [ Makes his counter-move without much pause. ]

[She smiles beneath her scarf, replying in kind.]

Very good. [Calliope gently puts her sassiness back on the leash, and settles in to enjoy the match.]

[ And an enjoyable match it will be! He's been playing adults — and winning — since he was four years old, but Gideon taught him that there's always someone better and so he will not make the mistake of underestimating her. The moves are quick though. ]

I'm Reid, by the way. Spencer Reid.

[Despite only being beaten by Caliborn once, and through trickery at that, Calliope is no chess master. But she does have her naturally tactical thinking on her side. Her replies are not as swift, but not hesitant; each is still very carefully thought out.]

[She is also trying to to get flustered as she starts to realize how skilled he is of a player.]

"Callie."

A pleasure to meet you, sir. You go by Reid, and not Spencer?

Depends on who's talking to me, but most people call me Reid. [ You'd have to be pretty close to use anything else, and even then it's not the norm. ]

Callie... is that short for something? [ Idly watching. Something familiar about her general shape, but he can't quite put his finger on what it is. Not yet. ]

Ah! Unusual, but I'll certainly call you what you wish.

[She glances up from the board, not entirely expecting to meet his eyes. Once she does, however, she is caught.]

Yes, it is.

[She turns her attention downward again, question successfully answered.]

[ Okay then. He lets it go for now, but if his curiosity wasn't piqued before it sure is now. Letting some silence stretch out over a move or two before speaking up again. ]

Is this the first time you play against someone aside from your brother?

Strictly speaking, yes. I tried to teach my friend Roxy how to play, but she was lost in the stabilizer.

[She hums at a particularly tricky move before making a strategic decision.]

-before she was confident enough to play a proper game, I mean!

That's too bad... I'm sorry for your loss. [ Countering with relative ease. ] On the bright side, we have plenty of good players here.

Thank you. I miss speaking with her.

[She's not super completely broken up about it, though.]

Should she ever return, I hope she'll be proud of the progress I've made, practicing against so many good players! ... Even if she can't quite tell I've made progress, but that's beside the point.

[Calliope's move is a bit more uncertain. Strategically she believes she knows how to move, but she's second-guessing herself as to whether or not Reid can see what she's trying to accomplish.]

[ Chances are he can see where she's going with it — if not now, then soon — but this is supposed to be fun and although he's happy to give her a challenge, he doesn't want to completely overpower her.

Of course, her words throw him off his game just a touch, hitting harder than she could possibly imagine. Meeting Gideon... it's still tender. ]

...I'm sure she'll be able to tell.

[She glances up at him. If he betrays any hint that she grew too close to his personal life, she doesn't pick up on it. Instead, she's surprised by his response at face value.]

[Under her scarf, her smile is a bit wry, but there is still warmth there.]

I hope so. [She drops her gaze back down to the board, following through with her strategy, even if she's not completely confident about it yet.]

[ If he'd had his head completely in the game, he would've spotted it by now if not sooner, but as it is he's too distracted. Whatever she's trying to do, she succeeds and he proceeds with making his own move unaware. ]
