[ Although the other day was far from as traumatic as the last inmate influx, it left Reid a little pensive. Made him think of extreme aggressors, of 50 000 chess games, of expecting different outcomes in a game that would only end with check mate, but unlike a few years ago this is not a depressive thought. Instead, it makes him crave interaction and so he hits up the network. ]

Hey, guys. I was wondering... there's quite a few of us here that know how to play chess. How would you feel about an impromptu tournament? Nothing fancy, just... I don't know, anyone who's interested could drop by the library and we'll set up a few games. Bring a board, if you got one.

[ A bit of an awkward smile and then he cuts the feed. ]

(( OOC: MINGLE-STYLE! Email notifs are off, so thread to your hearts content! Reid will have a video response thread here and an action response thread here for your Reid-y needs! ))

[Calliope temporarily forgets how to speak. Her mouth working is roughly equivalent to trying to jump-start a stalled car.]

[She drops her hands into her lap, giving Euphie an unreadable look.]

Why?

I'm not sure. It's a hard thing to define, isn't it? But some people become familiar and you want to see them succeed and do better and be happy. You wonder how they are when you haven't seen them.

[She frowns. It is an innocent enough reply, but she cannot help but be nervous for it. Her voice drops, serious but gentle.]

Please listen carefully, Euphie. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to see him do better. My entire life has been spent attempting to teach him compassion and the virtues of the social races. But you need to understand, too. He's never said a single kind word to me in our entire life.

Maybe he'll get more out of... [Someone who can actually speak face-to-face with him.] Someone else. It is worth a try.

But please don't let yourself get hurt.

[This feels so very much like Allen speaking to her about Road and Tyki.]

I'm not worried about myself, but I'm so sorry it's been like that for you.

[She makes herself smile, but it is shaky and uncertain.] Not to worry. I've had plenty of good, positive people in my life, too.

Still, if he ever does something... untoward or peculiar, please don't hesitate to tell me. I know him better than anyone else. Even if there isn't much that can be done from my end, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve.

I'm not sure what I would say is peculiar. Most of what he does surprises me.

He's certainly an astonishing person, albeit not in the ways he thinks he is.

[She clears her throat and turns her full attention back to Euphie.]

But how so?

Well, I got him a harmonica for Christmas, and he seemed certain I was playing a joke on him.

[She hums thoughtfully. Calliope supposes trying to explain this point can't hurt.]

Correct me if I'm wrong—did you not play a game with him, wherein your solution was a harmonica?

Yes.

And then you turned around and gave him one, even though I'm fairly certain he destroyed the first one.

[She's going somewhere with this.]

I thought he might like it if he gave it a try. I'm not sure what sorts of things he does like.

[She is surprised about that, her eyes widening as she leans forward.]

Really? In his shoes, I'd find that a sweet gesture. But equally confusing.

[Calliope holds her tongue for a brief moment as she prevents herself from rambling about truly why, and decides to go for the short answer.]

He likely regarded it as an extension of the game he initiated with you, but took the gesture poorly and with great suspicion. [She shrugs.] But he is also a bloody git. That's equally important to bear in mind when dealing with him.

I didn't mean to make him feel mocked or suspicious. It was a Christmas gift. [But she can see where it was a poor choice.]

I know, love. It's alright.

[She then pauses and asks herself why she is comforting Euphie for pissing her brother off, and decides that's ridiculous.]

Since it sounds like you didn't do anything intentionally wrong, I don't think it's anything to fret over.

Yes...But maybe I should apologize and get him something else. What do you think he'd like?

[Calliope stares at her. Even if Euphie wants to try and help Caliborn, the idea of Calliope helping someone be that above-and-beyond kind to him makes her feel uneasy and ill. Not to mention, selfishly, she doesn't want him to dominate every conversation, even while asleep.]

[It is not Euphie's fault. She decides she just can't explain how much she hates Caliborn and she definitely isn't going to let the princess get into a dangerous spot with him.]

... Well...

[She drops her gaze to her hands.]

I doubt he could turn his nose up at a new game...

A game? Of course, that should have been obvious. They are so important to him. Thank you. That's very helpful.

"Important" doesn't even begin to cover it.

[Calliope looks down at their chess match.]

Of course!

But for all their importance to us, we regard games very differently. I love them because they're fun and a chance for healthy competition. He... sees them as a way of proving his dominance.

[She frowns. That might not be the best wording, but it's all she could come up with in a pinch.]

I think there were those in my family who had similar opposing ideas about games.

That must make it hard for him to lose.

Oh, of course. He always pitches a fit.

[She pauses, thoughtfully.] Then again, he also pitched a fit when he won.

I think he just doesn't know what to do with himself, sometimes. [Or, more likely, he just likes pissing Calliope off at every opportunity.]

[Despite her best efforts not to, Calliope frowns.]

Maybe.

I have a feeling I know what would make him very happy, but... you don't want to hear about that.
