[ Although the other day was far from as traumatic as the last inmate influx, it left Reid a little pensive. Made him think of extreme aggressors, of 50 000 chess games, of expecting different outcomes in a game that would only end with check mate, but unlike a few years ago this is not a depressive thought. Instead, it makes him crave interaction and so he hits up the network. ]

Hey, guys. I was wondering... there's quite a few of us here that know how to play chess. How would you feel about an impromptu tournament? Nothing fancy, just... I don't know, anyone who's interested could drop by the library and we'll set up a few games. Bring a board, if you got one.

[ A bit of an awkward smile and then he cuts the feed. ]

(( OOC: MINGLE-STYLE! Email notifs are off, so thread to your hearts content! Reid will have a video response thread here and an action response thread here for your Reid-y needs! ))

I like to think I'm halfway-decent, despite my lack of alternative challengers! My thinking is very tactical by nature.

[Good-naturedly, as she moves her knight around:] But if I must be schooled by a tiny chess prodigy in order to learn a thing or two, so be it.

Chess prodigy I don't know about. He is still learning as well.

You're doing good from what I can see.

[They might be fairly evenly matched]

You may be right, but I know better than to underestimate an artificial intelligence, no matter what the skill level!

[Still, she's quite glad to be doing well. It's fun, and the unorthodox nature of her opponent is great. She cuts off any follow-up commentary she might have to re-focus on the game for a minute.]

Always a good idea.

[He lives with two so he knows what trouble they can do.

Frederick makes his next move and flaps his ear flaps the best he can, seemingly pleased with that move. Though there is an opening there if she should see it]

[She idly rubs at her chin under her scarf, weighing her options.]

[Although it doesn't look like there's a trap, she knows one could be initiated with a piece that deep into enemy lines. But at the same time, she could start trying to tighten the noose around the haro's king.]

[Ultimately, she goes for it with her knight.]

[And... there wasn't any back up plan for that. Frederick missed it.

His ear flaps lower a bit as though in concentration, looking at the board and trying to come up with the best way to recover. Finally he moves again, Lyle just sitting back and watching. This was Frederick's game; he wasn't going prompt even if he saw something]

[Calliope smiles under the cloth. There is a rush in her head as she begins coordinating her chess army, setting up her moves in order to move in for kill—she goes on the offense, hoping the haro will react only to her movements on his side of the board.]

[It does leave her back line less guarded as she shifts pieces in tighter, though.]

[Well, it does work some, but Frederick still does send some his passed hers, onto her side of the board when he has an opening. At the very least he's not making it easy]

[Muttered, but still addressing Frederick:] That's the spirit, love. Now it's a proper battle.

[She starts trying to balance her approach a bit. Usually, she's able to tell about how many moves are left until she can win, but this is tight enough that she isn't even sure who will come out on top.]

Battle! Battle!

[Frederick is trying to keep a balanced approach as well, but as they get closer to the end of the game, it looks to Lyle like Frederick is leaving more holes open for her to get through. Looks like he still needed more practice]

[She pauses an extra long time, planning and considering and weighing different moves.]

[It will be close, but...]

Check in five—unless you think you can stop me sooner!

[Lyle did have to admit she was very good at this. He takes a moment studying the board and she'd probably able to see his finger moving as though conducting pieces on the board to get to what she sees.

Luckily Frederick isn't watching Lyle and moves again, aiming to stop her]

[Calliope smiles at Lyle, though it is small enough that her eyes don't reflect it as much.]

[She is pleased with the little robot's counter attack, not even minding as her pieces begin to fall.]

So fierce!

[Frederick has gotten a second wind since she told him that, but it still isn't enough to completely prevent it. Soon he has no choice but to leave his king open]

[She positions her Queen to nearly complete the trap. If she had not been so decisive, though, she knows the haro would have easily had her within two or three moves.]

Check!

Out of check! Out of check!

Check again!

[Softly, at her own pun.] Hehehe.

[Lyle snickers at that. He can pretty much see at this point unless something drastic happens, Frederick is going to lose soon.

Frederick can see that too and moves his piece out of the way]

[For Calliope, it has turned into the thrill of the hunt, even if in a friendly and playful manner.]

[She nudges along after.]

Do let me know when you're ready to be mated, love. I can keep this up all day.

[Lyle can't help a chuckle]

Haros are stubborn. He could keep this up for while as long as he can.

[Both a comment and a warning in case she just wanted to go ahead and checkmate the king. And true to what Lyle said, Frederick moves his king away]

[She giggles.]

That's adorable. [Even if she's prepared to entertain him for awhile, it could get boring for Lyle, so she decides to complete the noose knot rather than chase his king around more.]

Mr. Frederick Haro, the jig is up.

[Frederick looks at the board a moment after she moves, then raises his arms back up under his ear flaps. After that he flaps them]

Good game! Good game!

[At least Lyle taught him to be a good sport about losing]

I'd say that was a good game. Thank you, Callie.

[Anything is better than Caliborn's reaction to losing, so she claps gleefully in a soft series of glove-muffled pap-paps.]

It was a pleasure playing with you, Frederick! And thank you, Lyle. This was a lovely opportunity, and it's always nice to meet new people.

[Lyle starts packing up Frederick's chess pieces] I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was nice meeting you. I'll let you know if he wants a rematch.

Certainly! I'll be ready to field it at any time.

[Calliope beams, reaching a gloved hand out to shake one of Frederick's with her forefinger and thumb.]

Study well, Frederick! I'll do the same.
