[ Although the other day was far from as traumatic as the last inmate influx, it left Reid a little pensive. Made him think of extreme aggressors, of 50 000 chess games, of expecting different outcomes in a game that would only end with check mate, but unlike a few years ago this is not a depressive thought. Instead, it makes him crave interaction and so he hits up the network. ]

Hey, guys. I was wondering... there's quite a few of us here that know how to play chess. How would you feel about an impromptu tournament? Nothing fancy, just... I don't know, anyone who's interested could drop by the library and we'll set up a few games. Bring a board, if you got one.

[ A bit of an awkward smile and then he cuts the feed. ]

(( OOC: MINGLE-STYLE! Email notifs are off, so thread to your hearts content! Reid will have a video response thread here and an action response thread here for your Reid-y needs! ))

It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Callie.

Pleasure to meet! AI! AI! Frederick is haro!

Haros are robots from my world. They manage repairs on our machines mostly, but also make good companions.

[And now Lyle has set up Frederick's chess pieces and Frederick raises his ear flaps to lower his hands so he can play]

[Her gaze flickers back and forth as they speak.]

I see! A dear friend of mine loves AI and robotics, so it will be a treat to play with someone of that esteemed multicosmic heritage.

[She makes the opening move as she rambles smoothly in her faux-British accent.]

So then you have some idea about it. I am curious to see how he does. Good luck to you both.

[Lyle moves his chair slightly out of the way so he can see as Frederick surveys the board and makes his move]

Thank you!

[She follows up smoothly, thinking a few moves ahead rather than chatting up the little robot, as she wants to.]

[New opponents are a bit of a double-edged sword; they're a brilliant and exciting new challenge, but at the same time, the inability to go on autopilot and know the kinds of strategies her opponent will employ means she can't as quickly and readily make friends.]

[Though she does spare Fredrick a few curious glances.]

[One benefit to being a computer is that Frederick can calculate a lot of possibilities at the same time. Still he does take the time to sit and think about his next moves after she moves.

And it was okay that she wasn't talking. Frederick was focused on a task so he wasn't going to be the best conversation at the moment.

Lyle - for his part - is watching quietly from the side to not distract either of them]

[As she starts getting into the groove, it begins to occur to her this can go a few different ways.]

[From what she knows of AIs, it's possible that Frederick has every single strategy in his database already, and she might be easily outclassed. Alternately, he may be learning as he goes, rather than downloading all of that information, in which case she may be able to teach the little robot a few things.]

[Calliope idly wonders if playful smack-talk should be one of them, and then decides to dismiss the idea.]

How long have you been practicing chess, Frederick? And same for you, Lyle, seeing as you've taken up teaching the little fellow?

[Frederick is learning as he goes. He's played against Lyle and a few others a number of times, but different opponents mean new opportunities for practice and a new chance to learn. Lyle didn't have the programming ability to simply teach him that easily]

Months! Months!

He's been playing over two months now. I forget exactly when I started teaching him. I have been playing off and on since I was a kid. I don't profess to be a master at it.

Ah! [She hums thoughtfully.]

I've played ever since I was old enough to understand the rules. Only against my "brother," though. I could use practice with more, um- [A slight pause as she tries to find the most tactful word.] -advanced opponents.

Hmm... that would make it more difficult if you were just playing against him.

Well, I don't know where you're at now, but Frederick is probably better than I am now.

[Being a robot does make it easier to learn from mistakes]

I like to think I'm halfway-decent, despite my lack of alternative challengers! My thinking is very tactical by nature.

[Good-naturedly, as she moves her knight around:] But if I must be schooled by a tiny chess prodigy in order to learn a thing or two, so be it.

Chess prodigy I don't know about. He is still learning as well.

You're doing good from what I can see.

[They might be fairly evenly matched]

You may be right, but I know better than to underestimate an artificial intelligence, no matter what the skill level!

[Still, she's quite glad to be doing well. It's fun, and the unorthodox nature of her opponent is great. She cuts off any follow-up commentary she might have to re-focus on the game for a minute.]

Always a good idea.

[He lives with two so he knows what trouble they can do.

Frederick makes his next move and flaps his ear flaps the best he can, seemingly pleased with that move. Though there is an opening there if she should see it]

[She idly rubs at her chin under her scarf, weighing her options.]

[Although it doesn't look like there's a trap, she knows one could be initiated with a piece that deep into enemy lines. But at the same time, she could start trying to tighten the noose around the haro's king.]

[Ultimately, she goes for it with her knight.]

[And... there wasn't any back up plan for that. Frederick missed it.

His ear flaps lower a bit as though in concentration, looking at the board and trying to come up with the best way to recover. Finally he moves again, Lyle just sitting back and watching. This was Frederick's game; he wasn't going prompt even if he saw something]

[Calliope smiles under the cloth. There is a rush in her head as she begins coordinating her chess army, setting up her moves in order to move in for kill—she goes on the offense, hoping the haro will react only to her movements on his side of the board.]

[It does leave her back line less guarded as she shifts pieces in tighter, though.]

[Well, it does work some, but Frederick still does send some his passed hers, onto her side of the board when he has an opening. At the very least he's not making it easy]

[Muttered, but still addressing Frederick:] That's the spirit, love. Now it's a proper battle.

[She starts trying to balance her approach a bit. Usually, she's able to tell about how many moves are left until she can win, but this is tight enough that she isn't even sure who will come out on top.]

Battle! Battle!

[Frederick is trying to keep a balanced approach as well, but as they get closer to the end of the game, it looks to Lyle like Frederick is leaving more holes open for her to get through. Looks like he still needed more practice]

[Lyle did have to admit she was very good at this. He takes a moment studying the board and she'd probably able to see his finger moving as though conducting pieces on the board to get to what she sees.

Luckily Frederick isn't watching Lyle and moves again, aiming to stop her]

[Calliope smiles at Lyle, though it is small enough that her eyes don't reflect it as much.]

[She is pleased with the little robot's counter attack, not even minding as her pieces begin to fall.]
