[ Although the other day was far from as traumatic as the last inmate influx, it left Reid a little pensive. Made him think of extreme aggressors, of 50 000 chess games, of expecting different outcomes in a game that would only end with check mate, but unlike a few years ago this is not a depressive thought. Instead, it makes him crave interaction and so he hits up the network. ]

Hey, guys. I was wondering... there's quite a few of us here that know how to play chess. How would you feel about an impromptu tournament? Nothing fancy, just... I don't know, anyone who's interested could drop by the library and we'll set up a few games. Bring a board, if you got one.

[ A bit of an awkward smile and then he cuts the feed. ]

(( OOC: MINGLE-STYLE! Email notifs are off, so thread to your hearts content! Reid will have a video response thread here and an action response thread here for your Reid-y needs! ))

[She leans back in surprise at the sudden appearance of Euphie, having no peripheral vision.]

[But she recognizes her, and relaxes a little.]

Yes, but no one in particular.

Would you like to play?

[Euphie smiles, recognizing her now.] I'd like that. I used to play and watch a lot when I was younger.

Then, by all means!

[She gestures toward the seat opposite of her, and then fiddles with the scarf. Maybe it would be okay to lower it, since Euphie has seen her face before.]

[And because Caliborn keeps harassing her.]

[Then again, that could also be used as an argument not to show more of her face.]

I play white rather exclusively. Is that alright with you?

[She takes the seat across the board from the other girl and looks down at the black pieces.] I usually played white myself, but I don't mind. That was more Lelouch's preference.

Ah!

[With a moment of hesitation, she decides not to offer to switch it up, and makes the opening move, instead.]

Colour is very important to us. If I knew that wasn't the case for humans, I'd offer to switch. But as it stands, I'm not certain I'd even play well using the black army. It would feel terribly wrong.

Us? Do you mean you and Cal? [She sees her move and offers a very competent counter. She doesn't think of herself as very good at the game, but she has played against the best, so of course she rarely won.]

[She freezes when Euphie calls her brother by his rarely-used nickname. Relief of any kind only comes when she is sure Euphie isn't going to say the whole thing.]

[Swallowing, she recovers and tries to make a decent follow-up without being too flustered.]

Yes.

Did he... give you his full name?

No, he said it was important not to. [And it was hard to miss that reaction entirely.] Is something wrong?

I thought-...

[Ultimately, though, no rules were broken. So she shakes her head.] Nothing is wrong, other than perhaps how much attention he must be paying you. He rarely gives anyone personal details.

[She shakes her head, training her focus onto the board.]

No one can force him to do a bloody thing. I've spent my life trying.

No matter what the conversational circumstance, he gave it willingly. I'm so very, very sorry.

[She's confused by that, since she thought it was obvious. Calliope finally tugs down the scarf over her mouth.]

Well- because he's a nasty bully who says absolutely rotten and hurtful things!

If you'd like, I can try and encourage him to leave you alone, but I can't make promises.

Oh...

Well, he is all those things, but it wouldn't seem right not to talk to him. I suppose I think of him as a friend.

[Calliope temporarily forgets how to speak. Her mouth working is roughly equivalent to trying to jump-start a stalled car.]

[She drops her hands into her lap, giving Euphie an unreadable look.]

Why?

I'm not sure. It's a hard thing to define, isn't it? But some people become familiar and you want to see them succeed and do better and be happy. You wonder how they are when you haven't seen them.

[She frowns. It is an innocent enough reply, but she cannot help but be nervous for it. Her voice drops, serious but gentle.]

Please listen carefully, Euphie. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to see him do better. My entire life has been spent attempting to teach him compassion and the virtues of the social races. But you need to understand, too. He's never said a single kind word to me in our entire life.

Maybe he'll get more out of... [Someone who can actually speak face-to-face with him.] Someone else. It is worth a try.

But please don't let yourself get hurt.

[This feels so very much like Allen speaking to her about Road and Tyki.]

I'm not worried about myself, but I'm so sorry it's been like that for you.

[She makes herself smile, but it is shaky and uncertain.] Not to worry. I've had plenty of good, positive people in my life, too.

Still, if he ever does something... untoward or peculiar, please don't hesitate to tell me. I know him better than anyone else. Even if there isn't much that can be done from my end, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve.

He's certainly an astonishing person, albeit not in the ways he thinks he is.

But how so?

[She hums thoughtfully. Calliope supposes trying to explain this point can't hurt.]

Correct me if I'm wrong—did you not play a game with him, wherein your solution was a harmonica?

And then you turned around and gave him one, even though I'm fairly certain he destroyed the first one.

[She's going somewhere with this.]
