⟡ action ⟡
[Today's adventure is less of a fiesta and more of a siesta.]

[Namely, one thoroughly-exhausted Zatanna can be found at the Library. Pouring over texts as if she were in danger of failing MarinaNova 101. The journals are old. The writing in them mostly by hand. She has a notebook of her own off to one side, filled with scribbles and diagrams and anything else she could think of. Most of them magic, though there were a few other symbols drawn in there as well. Such as distinctive "R"s, and lightning bolts and other insignias of her friends. Her and home.]

[If one is fortunate enough to catch her before noon, she might even still be conscious. Either mindlessly doodling or browsing one of the shelves. Otherwise...any passer-bys will find the fourteen year old passed out over the texts.]

[He gives the pun what his children have semi-affectionally dubbed That Patient Look.]

No, I've never heard of anyone relying on words to perform magic before. It's simply a matter of knowing how to manipulate it through your Jewels.

[She knows that look. Quite well.]

I really hope you mean literal Jewels.

Yes, real Jewels. The Darkness grants us Jewels as children that correspond to our strength. The colors are White, Yellow, Tiger Eye, Rose, Summer-Sky, Purple Dusk, Opal, Green, Sapphire, Red, Gray, Ebon-Gray and Black. The darker your Jewels the stronger, and Opal acts as the dividing line between light and dark. When you're older you make the Offering to Darkness, and can descend up to three Jewels if you're strong enough. So, for example, my birthright Red descended to Black. It's all a bit complicated without a bit of context, I suppose, but that's the essence of it. There are also various magical castes that bring additional powers and abilities with them.

So...this jewel...it's more like an external power source?

What happens if you lose it?

More like a focus for internal power. That darkness is within all of us; it's what makes us Blood. Some have more, some less. The Jewels allow us to tap that power inside ourselves and funnel it into something useful.

Well they've taken mine from me here and my abilities are very limited as a result. It's possible to shatter a person's Jewels permanently as well and cut off their ability to access their power. You need to destroy their sense of self to do it. Rape is the most popular method. [Some sadness there, because that's a bit personal.] Can you loose access to your abilities?

[She wasn't quite expecting the rape mention, and her eyes very visibly widened. But otherwise, Zatanna maintained her composure throughout the explanation.]

I--uh...well, yeah. I mean, sometimes. [Taking a moment to collect her thoughts, she inhales once before trying again.] Not...you know...the same way you were talking about.

Back where I'm from, there's this special kind of metal that's resistant to magic. But it's not common on my home planet; the only reason we even know about it is because there's a couple from the world it comes from lives there now.

Although, here, the Wardens also apparently have the ability to take away your power as punishment. You're familiar with those stupid collars, I assume?

[He nods silently, not commenting on the reaction. It's not a pretty thing, and it's been tried on too many people he cares about lately.]

This metal, does it create some sort of aura to negate your magic entirely, or is it just limited to preventing craft from being used on anything made out of it?

I'm aware of them, yes. Utterly barbaric, as far as I'm concerned.

As far as I know, the second one. But depending upon how it's used, it could at least partially negate entire spells.

Is it possible they are using it here in some way?

It's possible. But I still have access to my magic, for the most part. And that wouldn't explain how it could affect other people's abilities--my other friends from home aren't affected by it the way I am.

Back to square one, then. I suppose its reasonable to assume if our powers are so different from each other theirs can be equally alien and unpredictable.

Thus, the research.
