[Waking in an unfamiliar place isn't half as troubling as knowing that she can't, at the moment, leave under her own power. Gingerly, Lacus assesses herself, grateful for the bandages on her neck and less so for the tender side of her face that is doubtless an ugly, mottled purple. Even less encouraging is how weak those few moments of movement have left her. Coordinators are quick to heal, but still human.]

[A quick assessment of the morning's postings tells her that the visitors from yesterday were indeed temporary. If that's in any way a relief, it's tinged with bitterness nonetheless. Indignation for this place and its constant manipulations will have to wait, however, as she has calls to make. It won't do for people to worry that she too has vanished without a trace.]

[Voice/Private - Sougo Okita]
Sougo? [Immediately, she regrets making the call herself. Her voice is weak and thin, no way he won't worry. She hates to do this after he's lost his sister. But surely Data's close by, she trusts that he wouldn't leave her alone like this, so he can help her explain things.]

[Voice/Private - Sam Merlotte]
[She waits until afternoon to call Sam, when perhaps she could sound a bit less upsetting. Unfortunately she can't muster much more energy and so probably sounds just as worrying, but she can't wait any longer before she's late for her shift.] Sam? I'm sorry, but [she has to take a breath before she can go on] I won't be able to come to work for a few days.

[It's troubling the way her voice comes across weak, almost as if she's forcing some semblance of strength to just talk. He's worried for sure.]

Ah, it's alright. Take what time you need. [Any number of things run through his head along with questions. It could be she ran into someone she missed terribly, or someone who upset her... he knows people have come and gone in the blink of an eye. or was it something more?]

What happened?? Are you gonna be alright?

[A pause to keep her voice even; she's still weak enough that her body is sucking in oxygen like crazy.]

I'll be alright, in time. I ended up... somewhat hurt after yesterday. [Somewhat being an understatement, but considering how far her brilliantly engineered self-healing body has come since the attack, she feels comfortable with the small untruth.]

[That is indeed the question. Spike may have had his reasons given his friendship with Tyki, but Lacus is more inclined to believe it was in spite of that.]

Because I happened to be in the vicinity, I think. I'm sure that, for what they were after, one person was as good as another.

Sam, please don't worry. I'm being taken care of. It may be a while before I'm strong enough to work, is all.

What they were after? [Yeah he's curious and concerned. This kinda sounds familiar...but he doesn't want to jump to conclusions.]

Lacus, I don't exactly take kindly to people hurtin' my friends, especially if they're my employee's. I'd like t'know who did this cause they ain't gonna be welcome in my bar.

[He's thinking of risks here and her protection or comfort. Merlotte's has been a safe place, a place to remind people of home so they can relax. He doesn't want that to change for anyone. It needs to be safe for his employee's too.

Of course, he has no idea what he's saying or that he may have to choose between his friends if he wants to keep that promise.]

[And this is just what Lacus was afraid of, having to choose between making more trouble or lying to those she cares about. Maybe she wouldn't feel such a need to protect Spike's identity if Tyki hadn't already done... Whatever he did that night as punishment. But stronger still is the desire not to renew the tension between vampires and the rest of the dome. She has seen what fear and prejudice can do and would never want to be the cause of it.]

I don't wish to put you off, perhaps you have a right to know. But I believe matters would only be made worse if I tell people... And I believe it would hurt you specifically. The last thing I want is for this incident to cause pain in anyone else, especially one I hold as dear as you.

But if you ask me again, knowing all of this, I won't keep it from you.

[He has plenty he could say about how he feels about vampires and how he handled it back home, if he only knew that's what this was. However, he also understands what she's trying to do and wants to respect her wishes. She's looking out for him as well... so maybe it's someone he knows? He's... not really sure who could have...

I won't. Jus... is something being done about this? The wardens or the defense force or anything? It shouldn't go unpunished no matter who it is.

An'... I mean, if they ever come in here an' you ain't comfortable, you tell me and I will personally ask them to leave.

Thank you, Sam. But I don't think it will be a problem. I always feel safe around you.

And as for the person who did this... I don't think you need to worry. [No pride or satisfaction in her voice; in fact, Lacus sounds ashamed.]
