day 231 | video; | ota
[ helen appears on the feed looking composed as usual. she's not yet taking her duty shift at the clinic, so she's actually sitting at her table in her apartment. regardless, she's sitting up straight as usual. ]

As it seems we're to be inundated with new arrivals and familiar and unfamiliar faces, I'd like to remind everyone that the clinic is still operational. We're more than willing to see anyone who may need our help. Don't let anything keep you away if you'd like to stop by.

In the meantime, I'd like to pose a question I find myself curious about. I realize it seems we have little need for differing languages, but I'm curious to know which ones other people know. I'm fluent in a great many of Earth's languages, current as of the year 2011, both regularly used ones and ones that are considered "dead." No real reason for asking. Consider it the scholar in me who's truly curious.

[ she pauses for a moment, obviously on the verge of saying something else before she finally decides to continue. ]

Nikola, if you see this, answer. I'd rather not have you wandering around terrorizing everyone. [ she fully expects him to snap at her for this... if her instincts aren't correct and for once, she hopes they aren't. ]

Alright.

[He thinks for a minute before starting to speak in his native tongue. Omwatese is a little hard to describe but it's a beautiful language. It's somewhat fluid and melodious. It has some odd tonal inflections but it's elegant.

He says, "Lets see if this thing really can translate any language. I'd be surprised if it knows my native tongue. It's extremely rare even in my universe." and it translates.

Fascinating.

[ both the language and the fact that the communicators translate it. ]

Absolutely fascinating that something rare would be able to be translated. Makes me wonder how many Earth languages it could translate.

[Indeed.]

So it worked? Huh. Man, now I'm curious to know how they got this sorta technology or where they picked up Omwatese to be able to translate.

[Does he think he'll get answers? Nope.]

Earth. A whole universe of languages. No, I mean, we're talking alternate realities included. Countless galaxies. [The possibilities seem endless. His nerd is showing a little. He might be kinda excited about the thought, though he's not sure why it never occurred to him to be interesting. He never considered just what this thing could do.]

I know. It's fascinating to think of just how many languages Earth has in my time and how many more other worlds might have. Multiply it by the number of worlds we have represented here and you've got a massive library of languages and information. It's like a treasure trove when you stop to think about it.

[ of he's enjoying this, her inner language nerd is showing. she's always been interested in this sort of thing and to see or hear it in action like this fascinates her. ]
