day 230 [ voice | action | filtered & open ]
[ filtered to investigative team ]

Greetings. For those with whom I have not spoken directly, my name is Data. In the interest of putting this announcement in the proper context, it seems wisest that I begin by explaining that I am an android. As such, I possess the ability to accurately record and recall any information to which I am exposed. Some of you may be aware that, during our time in Squall Asylum, we made use of this in order to record information in the absence of any other means by which to do so.

Though we have since returned to MarinaNova, I have agreed to continue doing so in order to gradually compile an organized database of our working knowledge that we can search, compare, reference, and update. While I will still be taking reports personally, I will also be constructing a computer system with which I am capable of interfacing to store and to provide access to these files to all team members for their own investigative research purposes. This will take some time with the materials which are available to us, but I believe it is possible. This would prevent any loss of information were I to become lost, or damaged.

If anyone has any input, suggestions, or questions regarding this project, or would be interested in assisting, I would be most welcoming of any cooperation.

I hope that you do not mind my contacting you directly. It was suggested by Doctor Reid that I initiate a conversation with you, specifically regarding what he described as your attempts to compile an encyclopedia of available knowledge on the facility. He believes that we may benefit from coordinating our efforts and possibly integrating all of our information into a single database with various levels of access as would apply to that which is restricted to the Investigative Team, and that which is available for public perusal. I would be happy to work cooperatively on this endeavor, if you wish.

[ open in dome / potential trekpartment action ]

[ After making the post, Data busies himself looking into the technology and components which are available and gauging their potential usefulness. He's built devices out of objects far less advanced, but he believes he may still have to request some items from the wardens. Somehow, he has his doubts about how well that will go. So the more he can manage to do with what they have available to them, the better.

At the same time, there is another matter on his mind - Geordi has had a couple of days to become accustomed to his surroundings and seems to be adjusting well. Probably a good time to properly introduce Annika in context of their relationship, at the next point they're all together. Ah. Anxiety. Still a curious sensation. ]

I do not believe the intention would be to restrict it in its entirety; prior to my assistance being requested with the Investigative Team's records, there was already a project underway for a public database. I believe, however, it is possible to combine the two, to restrict certain files and to supplement what is designated as public with additional information as it is deemed relevant. I agree that it would certainly be more harmful than beneficial to restrict too much of our knowledge.

Of course. [ Jean-Luc offers one of his token, curt nods. He and Data have so rarely disagreed on the logic of something that he had expected no other answer of him. In most things he tended to practice logic, unless a situation called for some creative thinking. It was just who he was. He had abandoned most frivolities many, many years back and was only just learning to allow a few of them back in, such as poker with his crew and letting some of his guard down.

Which is what brings him to his next question, an aspect of his crew of which he often overlooked, but was learning to pay attention to.
]

Uh… and you and Seven? I trust all is well? [ No one said he wasn’t still awkward about it. ]

[ The question does come as a surprise to Data, who expresses that with an arching of his brows. After a moment, he lowers his gaze with an additional quirk of his brows, tilting his head to the side in the same motion. ]

I believe that our relationship is progressing well, though I can only speak to my own experiences with complete certainty. While my conclusion appears to be supported by my her reception to our interactions, those are my own observations and as such are subject to interpretation. Therefore, I cannot say with certainty that her analysis would be the same.

Oh I trust in her ability to tell you directly were her analysis any different.

[ In fact, he'd come to appreciate that about Seven in the same way he appreciated it about Data, her directness. ]

[ He nods. ]

I do suspect that, were she dissatisfied, it is likely that I would be made aware of that.

[ And with a small tilt of his head. ]

Nonetheless, I must confess that pursuing such a relationship remains a... uniquely challenging experience.

[ Because emotions really change this whole thing. ]

Data, have you thought to study differing manners of courtship that you might apply to your current situation?

[ Because Jean-Luc is even stunted in courtship in many ways and he has all the emotions. ] I'm certain you could find numerous volumes of literature on the subject in the library.

Yes - I have done so, however... given Annika's background, I find that it is often difficult to predict how she will react to certain approaches.

However, there are others which are more immediately apparent as being appropriate. For example, I have learned that she has an affinity for music - as such, I recently composed and played a piece for her on my violin. I believe that she was pleased.

Yes, I can see how her past experiences might change her perception of such things. Trial by error is probably the best course of action.

Precisely, sir.

[ A small nod. ]

I do not wish for her to feel as though I am attempting to pressure her exploration of her own humanity.
