day 230 [ voice | action | filtered & open ]
[ filtered to investigative team ]

Greetings. For those with whom I have not spoken directly, my name is Data. In the interest of putting this announcement in the proper context, it seems wisest that I begin by explaining that I am an android. As such, I possess the ability to accurately record and recall any information to which I am exposed. Some of you may be aware that, during our time in Squall Asylum, we made use of this in order to record information in the absence of any other means by which to do so.

Though we have since returned to MarinaNova, I have agreed to continue doing so in order to gradually compile an organized database of our working knowledge that we can search, compare, reference, and update. While I will still be taking reports personally, I will also be constructing a computer system with which I am capable of interfacing to store and to provide access to these files to all team members for their own investigative research purposes. This will take some time with the materials which are available to us, but I believe it is possible. This would prevent any loss of information were I to become lost, or damaged.

If anyone has any input, suggestions, or questions regarding this project, or would be interested in assisting, I would be most welcoming of any cooperation.

[ filtered to rebecca crane ]

I hope that you do not mind my contacting you directly. It was suggested by Doctor Reid that I initiate a conversation with you, specifically regarding what he described as your attempts to compile an encyclopedia of available knowledge on the facility. He believes that we may benefit from coordinating our efforts and possibly integrating all of our information into a single database with various levels of access as would apply to that which is restricted to the Investigative Team, and that which is available for public perusal. I would be happy to work cooperatively on this endeavor, if you wish.

[ open in dome / potential trekpartment action ]

[ After making the post, Data busies himself looking into the technology and components which are available and gauging their potential usefulness. He's built devices out of objects far less advanced, but he believes he may still have to request some items from the wardens. Somehow, he has his doubts about how well that will go. So the more he can manage to do with what they have available to them, the better.

At the same time, there is another matter on his mind - Geordi has had a couple of days to become accustomed to his surroundings and seems to be adjusting well. Probably a good time to properly introduce Annika in context of their relationship, at the next point they're all together. Ah. Anxiety. Still a curious sensation. ]

[ Jean-Luc has just made a trip from the library. The building is very near empty in both the later hours and early hours and he really enjoys having it to himself for the most part. So it's with an armful of books that he returns to their shared apartment.

He isn't surprised to find Data up and about. Not only for his lack of sleep, but also because he had heard his broadcast to the Investigation Team.

He nods a greeting, setting his books down in an orderly fashion on one of the tables in their shared living space.
] Data. I heard your communique with the Investigative Team. I commend you on your efforts.

[ Of course Data hears the Captain make his entrance, glancing slightly in his direction with a curiously arched brow. He waits until he is addressed, however, to give a nod in return, with the smallest quirk of a smile. ]

Thank you, sir. I believe that it is in the best interests of all those present to cooperate toward establishing a more thorough and accessible knowledge base; volunteering my abilities toward furthering that goal seemed a reasonable course of action.

[ He nods, clasping his hands behind his back as he walks closer to Data. ]

A compilation of all acquired information would not only help the Investigative Team directly, but also Indirectly were we to make such available to the general populace. I've learned that a fresh idea doesn't always come from the most expected source.

[ A light frown of consideration touches Data's lips as he nods, and glances upward. ]

Indeed; an excellent point, sir. [ a small nod ] Doctor Reid indicated that he wished for access to the information to be restricted. However, perhaps it would be possible to grant access to those who express an interest on an individual basis, or to facilitate a discussion open to the general populace. I can understand his reasons for caution, given the surveillance present in the facility, but further discussion is certainly warranted once the system is in place.

Certainly there are some things which should be kept to the Investigative Team alone. However, I see no reason to restrict all information. Perhaps revisiting the notion of common sense would be appropriate in such decisions. Restricting the entirety of information, however, could not only cause a myriad of problems. It could also stunt information and knowledge gathered. In my experience, for everything we don't share, someone else is withholding something from us as well.

I do not believe the intention would be to restrict it in its entirety; prior to my assistance being requested with the Investigative Team's records, there was already a project underway for a public database. I believe, however, it is possible to combine the two, to restrict certain files and to supplement what is designated as public with additional information as it is deemed relevant. I agree that it would certainly be more harmful than beneficial to restrict too much of our knowledge.

Wow. Like, seriously: wow. I mean I knew I'd meet you eventually, but I didn't know I'd be helping you go all Sherlock on the joint! Talk about awesome.

[Garcia takes a breath and clears her throat before things can get weird...er.]

Sorry, sorry. I just get excited. I mean, I tinker with computers for a living and you're like, the ultimate technology. No offense or anything! I live and breathe tech so my computers are like my family. Anyway, I'm Penelope and I'm the newest, greenest team member around here and I worked with Reid back home and I'm totally at your service. And please don't think I'm psycho or anything. I'm really pretty nice, and I blame this rambling on my complete awe.

[ Even Data's many processors and sub-processors need a few moments to figure out what to do with that. ]

Greetings, Penelope. I am pleased to meet you as well, and I would be pleased to accept any assistance which you would be willing to offer.

[ Okay. Politeness satisfied, he can move to concerned. ]

However, I must admit that I feel obligated to inquire, are you feeling well? Please do not misunderstand; I do not intend to be insulting, but am inquiring out of concern. I do not typically find that I elicit such a response in others.

[She laughs, and relaxes a little.] I feel great. Just the amount of drugs inherent in three triple-shot lattes flowing through my veins, my friend. That and excitement about meeting you. I'm kind of a fan. [She's not about to mention the TV show thing, but certainly Data has enough of a rep here in the dome that it passes.]

But yeah, sure! How could you not have fans? You're pretty amazing by any standard.

Hey, Data. [Geordi swoops right in one Data's component-examining and picks up one that's not currently in use, turning it this way and that. He murmurs a few things to himself about the possible specs.] What are you working on?

[It goes without saying that he'll help.]

Geordi. [ A small nod in greeting, with a light smile. He doesn't mind his friend poking at the components, of course - after all, Geordi pokes around in his own head. That's trust right there. ]

I am constructing a computer to serve as a database for the Investigative Team. I have volunteered my services in organizing the available information by storing it within my own memory banks, but I will require a system with which I am capable of interfacing to back up the files and grant access to other team members.

[Hmm. Geordi starts mentally compiling the machine Data is suggesting out of the available components on the table.] Seems like you're a few short.

But Data... have you thought about what that might mean? If you're gathering information that could be used for an escape in your memory banks, and the Wardens find out about it, they might want to try something to get rid of the information.

[He's just worried, is all. These Wardens can do things they've only seen the Q do.]

[ He nods, considering Geordi's concerns carefully. It's not that they haven't occurred to him, of course, but Data is often more concerned with helping others over his own safety. ]

I understand your concern; however, it is a risk which I feel I must take. The wardens cannot be entirely unaware of my efforts to escape - considering the intimate knowledge that has already been displayed in regards to our personal lives outside of the dome, it seems reasonable to assume they, or their overseers, have superior knowledge now that we are within their grasp.

Additionally, once I have established a system with which I can interface, the information will no longer be exclusively contained within my own memory banks.

[He hesitates, not entirely convinced. But Data has a point, and Geordi's sure he's considered all the options.] Well... all right, Data. Just be careful.

Hey, as long as we're constructing things, I was thinking. Maybe we could get the materials to build a holodeck. We could say it's for recreation, but it'll be useful in running escape scenario simulations.

[ betty is looking for a record player. the search seems pretty hopeless, which is unfortunate considering her woeful unfamiliarity with everything else that is available. so, when she sees data, she is already frustrated and well into the mindset that assumes actual other inmates are really just display pieces. oops. ]

I would be most appreciative of any assistance. While I will need to ensure the hardware meets certain specifications to enable me to successfully connect to its systems, I am particularly interested in thoughts regarding the user interface in order to make it accessible for as many members of the team as possible.

[ And after the slightest pause - some terminology has not persisted to his time, so forgive the confused android. ]

If I may inquire - "wiki?"

Huh? Oh, wiki-- short for wikipedia, that type of online encyclopedia. It allows editing by registered members for stores of information put forward by users and peer collaboration. It's pretty funky, though there are idiots who sometimes ruin a good thing. [Anyone who vandalizes her baby though is going to get a Real Life kicking.]

I'd be down for it, lemme know what I can do and I'll make sure things are in check.

I see. An intriguing concept - allowing for open contributions would be beneficial to furthering knowledge and spreading an awareness of that information among those present. Am I correct in assuming there are measures in place to prevent misinformation being contributed, either intentionally or otherwise?

[ He can't imagine there not being some kind of system, and he's curious about basically any system even if it's not a 24th century standard. ]

I will be certain to keep you informed of my progress.

Eh, good old fashioned moderation. I don't expect a lot of trolling though, if that's your issue-- not when I can track the vandalizing party down with a few clicks of my hand. The internet's freedom of anonymity isn't here, so I'm hoping people don't act like jerks.
