[day 228] action - bean crushers coffeeshop;
[So what do you do when you think you’ve woken up in an underwater prison, surrounded by people from a multitude of other universes with things like magic and powers? You try and snap yourself out of a psychotic state, for starters. Secondly, you start trying to figure out how possible it is to give yourself an MRI. Run a few tests because clearly something’s wrong here.

Tumor, brain, somewhere. Coma? Bad dream.

Stress, breakdown. Total psychosis?

Can't feel a fever. Hallucinogenic? Would've remembered the brownies.

So while attempting to diagnose his own nonexistent mental issues Alex Karev will just be taking up roots in the coffee shop; tending to a cup of plain black with a side dose of pacing and eye-rubbing. He’s mentally unstable and hallucinating, doing a total Izzie only worse. Just freakin’ amazing. He’ll be offering any and all passerby a sidelong glance that may or may not be attempting to determine just how real they are. And possibly acting a little like a recluse in fear of giving this mental lapse a little more fuel to burn on.]

[Doctor, huh. Karev does scope Martha out after that confirmation, just a little.

He didn't really think she'd get it. He's pleasantly surprised.]
One M. D. to another, never get your own coffee. That's what interns are for, not self respecting doctors.

That would involve having interns. Sorry to break it though, we don't have any. Unless you count the creepy robots. I don't trust 'em though.

What's your area of study?

[She's not sure she believes him, but she'll play along.]

[He'll just take that coffee now, before she can take it back due to his inevitably snark. He'll take a long drink of it, too.]

Then use other people, looks better. [But you asked him about his specialty, why? A moment of thought and he neglects to bring up whole truths.] I was interested in Plastics for a while.

[Hey, it's not a lie.] You?

[She shrugs at his other people comment. She likes getting her own tea. It's part of her daily ritual.]

Trauma surgeon mostly, with a specialization in field work durning war.

[She'll leave out the alien autopsies. Most people don't want to hear of that, or think she's crazy when she brings it up.]

Plastics as in face lifts or plastics as in reconstructive surgery?

[Because one is for money and the other actually has a purpose in her mind.]

Our hospital handled both--Seattle Mercy West. [He says, though he doesn't think it means much considering she's British.

And then he's looking at the table, tapping his finger to his cup. Thinking of Sloan's actually a bit of a downer.]
So. What, you see anything cool on the field?

[It doesn't mean anything. She's more interested in the fact that he went from being super animated to not so much. As for anything 'cool' on the field...]

War is war. Lots of blown up bodies. Plenty of holes to sew up, body parts to sever. Burns to clean. Bodies mangled to the point of unrecognizable. Diseases you only read about in school.

[She stays nonchalant. Or tries to. Her war was not the traditional war most people think of. There were little tiny death star type things killing people, when the Master himself didn't feel like it.]

Not much to say about it really. People die in warzones. I did what I could to help fix them or make their passing peaceful.

Yeah, yeah, war's bad, we all know that. [He says in an almost dismissive tone.]

But was there anything cool to write home about. Severed body parts in holes, for instance. [Insensitive is his thing, don't let it get to you. He's also in an exceptionally horrid mood to boot.]

[He wants to be dismissive? Two can play that game. She shrugs and thinks back as though images aren't flooding her brain.]

Behind enemy lines, I watched the other side flay a man. You ever see a man flayed alive? They tend not to scream at the first cut; too much shock I suspect. But then the screams get louder and louder.

[She's gone into storytelling mode, and Martha is good at telling stories.]

He didn't live. The flayed man. One moment he was screaming, and then there were some gurgles. Then he was dead. They left him there on the ground and went to find sport somewhere else, so I snuck out closer to get a better look.

[To do what she could to mark his death. She couldn't do much, ever. Couldn't risk being found. But she took one of the small trinkets that had been given to her and placed it in the man's bloody hand before moving on.]

[But she does go into decent detail about what a flayed man looks like. And she doesn't look at all bothered as she tells it. Mainly this guy is an asshole, and she's purposely trying to judge his actual character. See if he has any smidgen of human caring. If he deserves to be let into the clinic she helps Helen run. Mostly, Martha hopes it's the shock of finding himself in prison that has him all messed up currently.]

[If you're looking for a reaction from Karev, there really isn't one. In fact, he's watching Martha with a rather blank look, not bothered even by the description. Much rather he's still assessing her in the same way she is him.

Slowclap incoming.]
Wow, gory. He died. Awesome story.

Saw the same thing in a movie once. [You try and tank him with gore and he's just going to rebuff it.]

Well, then I guess nothing I say will be good enough.

[It would if she told him what really happened. But then he'll think she's crazy and she's not willing to let this man think that of her.]

[She takes a bored sip of her tea and then smiles.]

Have you ever seen a woman drink blood out of a man's throat with a bendy straw?

[Not war, not even close to war... just a really disturbing things she saw once.]

Is that a question or a threat? [He snorts, but really. How did we get to this tier of conversation again?

He slinks back in his seat, still watching Martha but taking a long drink of coffee.]
But I mean cool as in exciting. Maybe it's just a surgeon thing, but the cool crap's not necessarily all the things that happen to give you the night time shivers.

I'm not a vampire!

[She thinks about it though. The way he had talked made it sound like he wanted gore. But this, oh yes she could talk about good.]

The Middle East is beautiful actually. Istanbul especially. Lots of history. And when the sun came up... sometimes you could forget just what was happening everywhere. Even during war, people are people and will stun you with their humanity.

And if you ever make it out to Tibet, spend some time with the monks. They really are amazing.

[He does want the gore though, but not the scare tactic gore. The I Want to Stick My Hands in That kind of gore that gets any surgeon excited.

His blank look may be an indicator that he's again not really listening.]
Amazing. You do any actual medical procedures though, or what?

[Martha finally sits in the chair across from him, tired of standing.]

Lots of war is about triage. Who can you heal so they can go out and continue fighting. Who can you save so you can send them back home to a hell of a half life. Who you should probably just let die.

The insurgents we were facing were using bayonets. I don't know why. But the few who did survive a bayonet stabbing were difficult to sew up. And I performed a number of amputations in less than ideal circumstances. [Refugee camps and the like.]

[He'd comment on how the opposing side seemed particularly brutal, but that'd give away that he'd been listening, much less seeming to care.]

So you aren't just a shiny, story-time nurse. Good to know.

[She's ready to get off the topic of war.]

Do you have proper stories or are you just a lovely ball of clouds?

Good solid stretch of years that includes anything from swallowed keys to cut L-VAD wires, transplants, twin separations and growing a kid an artificial trachea.

[There's a fleetingly brief tone of accomplishment and perhaps fondness at the last mention, which he shrugs off into his coffee.] We've had our share of emergency cases, too.

[That switch in tone... was it fondness? It was definitely something much easier to identify with than his current attitude of wanker. She studies him as she takes a sip of her tea and then stands.]

Well, your bedside manner leaves much to be desired, but you might actually be a halfway decent doctor. I have to start my shift at the clinic. You're welcome to come with me; I'll introduce you to the woman in charge, though I should ask. How well do you deal with... weird stuff?

[She doesn't really like him. In fact, she suspects they will have words over plenty of stuff, but she can't deny that doctors are useful. And she's dealt with worse...]

More or less. We're supposed to work only in range the wardens allow us. Small stuff.

[There might be an implication that some of them are willing to practice more high stakes medicine without the warden's consent. But she doesn't say it out loud. She's not stupid!]

[He makes a face.] If you're talking small time bandaids and nurse-work, I ain't interested.

I'm a surgeon, all that other stuff's insulting.

Well, we haven't had any emergencies yet. But I hope you enjoy the rest of your coffee. I have to get to work.

[If he wants to follow he can. But she's not going to shove him to do small time nurse-work. Frankly, she's not entirely sure why he's a doctor in the first place. She's a surgeon too, a bloody good one at that. But Martha has a bit of a different take on her job than most she supposes. She gives him a small smile before picking up her tea and her lab coat and heading out the door.]

[Karev doesn't do much more than nod his head, but he doesn't follow. He might check up on it in a day or two, but right now his temple's still thudding and he's not quite grasping what's really around him. Still could be a dream, a long shot he knows, because the longer this draws on he only has two options left to accept: Reality or Insanity.

He'll just drown the choice in coffee until he can face it.]
