[Voice// Video | Open!]
[The feed begins as voice, a man’s concerned but controlled voice making an official-sounding request:] Enterprise, come in. This Lieutenant Commander Geo--

[A brief moment of silence as the feed switches to video, and it becomes obvious why Geordi is having trouble working the device. His eyes, without iris or pupil, clearly mark him as blind.] Any Federation vessel? [A pause.] Computer? Computer, respond.

[He sighs, but doesn’t look surprised. A slight scoff, as if he’s somehow amused while also being irritated.] Figures. How do I switch frequencies on this thing? They could’ve at least left me with my combadge. But alright, let’s try... [He fiddles with the comm buttons and the feed swaps back to voice.]

Hello? Does anyone copy? I could use a little help here, and I’m getting used to the idea of not being picky.

((OOC: Action open to anyone who wants to find a blind man meandering around the beach!))

[A smile of plain relief comes to his face, and a chuckle. Of course Data would find him, even with what was apparently the most obsolete comm mechanism to exist in the 24th century.]

There you are. I'd call it my lucky guess on the frequency, but I knew you'd find me some other way. Tell me all about it when I get back on board.

I seem to be on a desert planet, Class M. Can you get a lock on me?

[Obviously he's a little behind.]

[ There's actually a slight hesitation before he moves into his response, more concerned about bearing bad news than he would have been prior to the chip. ]

Unfortunately, I am not on board the Enterprise - nor are you on a planet surface. I am, however, present in the same area and en route to what I believe to be your location; in adjusting the device's settings, you activated a video feed. Your description additionally seems to support my conclusions.

In the same area? That was quick.

[But all is not well. Even though Data's words are entirely sound and logically laid out, Geordi can just tell something isn't right. Is is neural net still overloaded from the chip? Why hasn't he been deactivated if so?] Data, what aren't you telling me?

There is a great deal that I must tell you, though I cannot discuss all of it on this channel.

[ But he might as well cover the basics while he's on his way. ]

You are in a facility known as MarinaNova Asylum, located within a large dome structure 1.03 miles beneath the surface of what is called the Saylar Ocean, though any further information about our location is as of yet unknown. Captain Picard and I have both been present in this facility for forty-four days, though we were each brought here from different chronological points of origin.

[Geordi processes the information with as much aplomb as he can manage for someone having been kidnapped twice in the last few hours. This is all strange, but since when aren't they dealing with unusual things? It's the life of a space explorer.]

[Nothing to do but handle it. And with Data and the Captain, there's probably nothing they can't handle -- although one thing is especially concerning.]

Forty-four days... [Geordi has a certain numb disbelief about that time frame. This isn't going to be easy, obviously.] Okay, Data. I'll just wait right here, wherever this is, and we'll figure it out when you get here. La Forge out.

[Geordi feels around in the sand and determines it's not immediately dangerous, so he takes a seat, using the sound of the ocean waves that he hadn't noticed until now to orient himself.]

[ Of course, Data moves quickly over even ground - he didn't quite break into a run, but he did make his way to the beach with a purpose, cutting long efficient strides across the dome.

When he arrives at the beach and spots Geordi, he's not quite able to keep the small smile from his face. Not that his friend can currently see it but it's an involuntary reflex as a result of the chip. It's not he's entirely comfortable with - of course he's happy to see Geordi, but under the circumstances he feels that he shouldn't be. As he makes his way toward him, he glances around to see if there's a bag nearby, one of the packages the wardens provide for personal belongings - hoping Geordi's VISOR is somewhere to be found. Their temporal discrepancies have clearly become more complicated. As he draws closer, he announces himself. ]

Geordi - it is me. Are you unharmed?

[There is a bag, but unfortunately it's lapping in the waves. His VISOR wasn't in there, though, nor his combadge.]

Hey, Data. Yeah, I'm okay. Actually, I'm a little relieved, since Soran and the Duras sisters were about to do something to me before I showed up here, and I'd bet it wasn't going to be pleasant.

I'm a little confused how there's a beach in an underwater dome, and I'd like to have my VISOR, but I sure am glad to see you -- [He pauses, laughs lightly.] You know what I mean.

Then you were taken from shortly after our investigation of the Amargosa observatory...

[ And, of course, his infallible memory calls that back up. Of course, when he's from, this has long been settled, but it hasn't from Geordi's perspective. ]

Geordi, I am sorry for my behavior at that time. I should have been able to do something to prevent your capture.

[ It seems guilt can still resurface quite some time after the fact. ]

You may be relieved to know that I am no longer experiencing such difficulties with my emotion chip.

[He would reach out and clap Data on the shoulder, if he could.] Don't worry, Data. Fear is a normal, human response. [Geordi smiles, for more reasons than one. Data's out of control laughter had been irritating at the time since they were trying to get things done, but Geordi can only be glad that Data finally got what he always wanted.]

Glad to hear it's resolved, though. How did you stop the chip from overloading?

[...And, wait just a second.] Where else would I be from?

My neural net was able to adapt to integrate the chip's emotional responses, rather than allowing them to overcome my other processes. [ On which note, ] I am... happy to see you as well, Geordi.

[ And still pleased by the fact that he can be happy. The rest of it... ]

I had mentioned that the Captain and I were taken from different chronological points. The current stardate prior to my arrival here was 50893.5; The Captain was taken from stardate 56844.9.

[ As for the beach under the sea, the facility as a whole... ]

There is much about the facility we do not yet understand. It has been an ongoing effort - though an exceptionally challenging one,

A temporal and spacial anomaly? That complicates things. [But still it's not like this is his first rodeo. Which is why he's not even going to ask about his future; that could be very dangerous.]

It's not exactly encouraging to hear you telling me how complicated it is, Data. But at least, if the technology here is as good as that, maybe we can make me a VISOR. I'll be a lot more useful around here if I can see.

Any chance Q's behind this? That's usually what's going on when we don't know what's going on.

I do not believe that Q is responsible; I have been made aware that he was previously held here himself. It also seems likely that he would have made himself unquestionably known, at least to Captain Picard, by now.

[ The VISOR - right there with you, Geordi. That was one of the next points up on his agenda. ]

The technology which we can access is rather rudimentary in nature - we have not yet established access to the means by which the facility is maintained. [ Yet. ] As for your VISOR, however, we can request that the facility's wardens provide you with it. Though they are not forthcoming with information, I have not had difficulty requesting items within reason. I doubt they would allow us to have phasers, but I do not imagine that they would refuse you the ability to see. I can take you to speak with them.

[ And he offers an arm downward, close enough that Geordi should be able to feel that it's there and grab onto it. He's not going to just start dragging his friend around without his consent, after all. ]

Wardens, huh. [If he doesn't sound that confident, it's because the title doesn't inspire it. Geordi doesn't like not being in control of his own destiny, not one bit.]

[But he does have his best friend, and he can't bring himself to be too much of a downer when Data's been stuck here all this time. So he smiles and takes his friend's hand to heft himself up.]
It's definitely worth a try. Think we could get away with asking for components to build a transporter? [That is mostly a joke.]

[ You're not alone there, Geordi. Data's tone makes his feelings - which he totally has - toward them pretty clear. ]

Titled in accordance with the facility's claims of being a rehabilitory prison - claims of which I remain skeptical. They are two non-corporeal artificial life forms named Conscienti and Veridical. They provided components for repairs which I required without issue, as well as my uniform.

[ Clearly he feels no kinship with them on those grounds. Geordi's joke does get a light touch of amusement that shifts his tone, though, as he pauses in helping his friend up. ]

Somehow, though, I believe we may have more difficulty with transporter components. It seems likely that a request for phase coils may arouse some suspicion. In terms of the technology we do have, however, we are in possession of two tricorders, and are in the process of improving upon the available computer systems.

[ With the help of his girlfriend and her nanoprobes. That's another point he'll have to cover today, but it seems best to introduce Annika as such when she's actually present - that's one of the things he is learning. At the same time as he's considering how to best introduce them, he's considering what information he still needs to share with Geordi, all the while considering how Geordi's presence is likely to help their progress. His emotion chip is still nagging at him over that last one, the responses contradicting themselves. ]

Huh. [There's a lot of thought in that one word. Geordi neither feels there is any kinship between Data and the Wardens, but it does interest him that they're artificial beings. Normally he'd already have ten ideas about how to subvert them and escape, but Data's probably already tried those and five others besides.] So they're willing to work with us, but only to a point.

[He gives Data a clap on the shoulder -- he's good at judging distances given a point of reference, even blind.] Once we get this sight thing taken care of, I'll help you out.

So, who's "we"? A few people who responded to me said they know you. Seems like you've been making friends. [He approves! Hearing Data's explanation of this place, it's only normal to befriend and cooperate with the others who are as trapped as they are. Besides, he trusts Data's judgment implicitly.]

[ It's definitely a point of interest to Data, even though it seems to have contributed to a few instances of people preforming opinions against him. ]

I have become acquainted with several individuals over my time here; I would certainly count a number of them as friends. Since shortly after our arrival, the Captain and I have been working with the Defense Force, an organization established and overseen by other individuals who were also brought here, as well as its Investigative Team subdivision. In advancing our available technology, I have been working with Seven, who was brought here from the starship Voyager.

[ He hasn't gone looking over Geordi's conversations, but he expects that she's likely responded. ]

With your assistance, I believe we will be able to improve our progress significantly. [ Which brings up the matter of the emotion chip. ] I must admit, I am experiencing some... conflicting emotional responses to your presence.

[First thing's first, he has to laugh lightheartedly at that final statement.] I'll say this: your chip certainly works just fine by now. It just took time, huh? I'm sorry I missed it.

[Speaking of missing things.] You'll have to introduce me around - but come to think of it, Seven already seemed to know about me. It was a little alarming for a second there.

[ From Data's perspective, Geordi didn't miss much of it. Temporal discrepancies can be difficult to deal with, even for an android. ] Though I am only capable of judging by my own perception of emotion, the chip does indeed seem to function properly. It is no longer fused to my neural net and can be removed, though I am able to deactivate it without physically removing it as well.

[ There's the unsurprising confirmation that she's established contact - and that, of course, she knows about Geordi. ]

Seven is a former Borg drone. As such, she is familiar with all of the Enterprise crew. I experienced a similar response upon our initial meeting.

[ Though his was a little more personal - but as much as he'd like to talk about it with his friend, the details of his abduction by the Borg clearly fall under the category of things that must not be shared. ]

Yeah, she mentioned that. [Geordi more or less lets that information roll off his back, just as it did when Seven mentioned it. They have bigger things to focus on, and she seems individualized enough that already he's not thinking of her as Borg.] She was pretty open about it, and friendly enough -- well, friendly in her way.

It's a shame about her name, though. She should have one that the Borg didn't give her. [Same reason he gave Hugh a name, really. Everyone should have their own identity.]

[ Data has come far enough to know to be cautious here; both in dealing with humans and in dealing with Annika specifically. It's not hard for him to imagine that defining herself going forward is difficult for her. ]

She is aware of her original human identity, inclusive of her name. However, she is still in the process of reclaiming and exploring her humanity and individuality. As such, she is only gradually becoming comfortable about reassuming that identity. Though I have been encouraging her in this pursuit, I believe it is important to respect the pace at which she feels comfortable.

[Whoa, that was surprising. He hasn't seen Data this protective since Spot.] Okay okay, you're right. I didn't mean anything by it, just that it's a little strange to call someone a number. I'm sure she'll get there.

I would not expect you to have "meant anything by it."

[ Said in complete sincerity, because Geordi is the most accepting person he's ever known. Geordi is also the person who can read him most easily. ]

She did arrive at the same time as the Captain and myself. In that time, we have had ample opportunity to become acquainted.

[ The specifics of their relationship are something he realizes he should probably not disclose without her. Impressive that he's learned that. ]

Well, good. [He claps Data on the shoulder again, because he's glad Data's making friends! It's sometimes hard given the feelings people have about androids -- totally unwarranted feelings, by the way.] Good. We could certainly use all the heads we can find, if we're going to work on this little problem.
