Day 226 l Christmas Party Mingle
[Ianto has, predictably, gone a bit overboard for the Christmas party he and Jack are throwing. The entire apartment has been decorated; there's a tree with gold and silver ornaments and twinkling lights, garlands draped over doorways, candles in every window and festive nicknacks scattered about. It looks like something out of a magazine, and may make visitors a little afraid to actually touch anything. There's also a lot of mistletoe around (one of the side effects of living with Captain Jack Harkness) so it's probably a good idea to keep one eye on the ceiling at all times.

Of course he's made plenty of coffee and some appetizers, so he hopes people really do respond to the invitation Jack sent out, otherwise there are going to be a hell of a lot of leftovers.]

I'll consider offering a class on it, although I don't know how relevant it is compared to some of the other courses offered here. I take it you're a friend of Jack's, then?

Relevant? Oh man, nothing is more relevant than people's vices in prison. Some of the other vices might make even better classes, but...

[She waves her hands in apology before he can react.]

Okay, sorry, I shouldn't be quite that plucky. It's habit when I'm in a good mood, being socially inappropriate. Your beau is especially good at matching flirtatious wits.

Don't worry; as you've rightly pointed out this is the direction most conversations with Jack tend to take, so it's hardly an unusual one as far as I'm concerned. Flirt away.

I knew I liked you! My life is so much easier when I don't have to worry about stepping on boundaries. [And hey, it's all in good fun. She talks a big game but she would never even think about moving in on anyone's territory, even if she weren't mourning her own soulmate at the moment.]

How'd you two meet? I love those stories.

[He pauses, almost imperceptibly, then lies.] I wanted a job. Had to help capture a pterodactyl just to get an interview, by the way. Anyway, it just sort of developed from there.

[Which is leaving out a lot of facts, like needing the job transfer as a way to hid his partially converted Cyberman girlfriend, or that he'd started sleeping with Jack purely to keep him from getting suspicious. Or that Jack had been the one to gun down Lisa when she lost control and started killing people, and that he'd been the only thing that had even made a dent in the depressed mess Ianto had been afterwards and the whole relationship beyond just casual sex had happened a lot later. Its easier to stick with the pterodactyl thing.]

[Fortunately, Garcia has her attention caught by the dino-hunting and is way too fascinated to ask about other details.]

A pterodactyl? Like an actual dinosaur? Oh man, you can't leave me hanging there. How does that even work, a gigantic mechanical T-Rex?

[He laughs, glad to know the conversation is staying light for the moment.]

Technically its a pterosaur, but yes, that's the one. I distracted it, Jack dived on it with a tranquilizer and got flown about for a bit before it dropped him on me and passed out and now it lives in our top secret science fiction base like a guard dog. As you do.

[Garcia absorbs the details with the wide-eyed awe of a little girl who just walked through the gates of DisneyWorld.] You might seriously be the coolest couple I have ever met. Or read about, even. And believe me, I've read all the best superhero comics.

[He blushes, clearly having no idea how to react to any of this.] I doubt we're quite on par with superheros, but thank you. What about you? I feel like I'm utterly monopolizing the conversation without finding out much about you.

No worries darling, it was me with the casual hero worship. But let's see... [Garcia sips at her delicious and perfect coffee while deciding how to describe herself.]

Aside from shameless flirt, I'm also a world class hacker and FBI analyst. I work with Dr. Reid over there back home. [She points to Reid through the crowd.] And obviously, I'm a pillar of fashion. [Her dress is a 1940's style cut which her accessories perfectly match, down to her glasses.]

I've met Dr. Reid a few times, which is enough to make me believe the world class claim. And from one pillar of fashion to another, let me add how lovely you look this evening.

Why thank you, good sir! [Garcia strikes a Vogue-like pose for good measure.] I work at it. Fashion makes me feel like me instead of some face in the crowd. At least if I'm a number, I'm going to be a well-coiffed number.
