Day 226 l Christmas Party Mingle
[Ianto has, predictably, gone a bit overboard for the Christmas party he and Jack are throwing. The entire apartment has been decorated; there's a tree with gold and silver ornaments and twinkling lights, garlands draped over doorways, candles in every window and festive nicknacks scattered about. It looks like something out of a magazine, and may make visitors a little afraid to actually touch anything. There's also a lot of mistletoe around (one of the side effects of living with Captain Jack Harkness) so it's probably a good idea to keep one eye on the ceiling at all times.

Of course he's made plenty of coffee and some appetizers, so he hopes people really do respond to the invitation Jack sent out, otherwise there are going to be a hell of a lot of leftovers.]

[Martha falls silent for a beat while she collects her own thoughts and then it occurs to her he probably feels the same way about the party she does. She thinks about it for a moment more before asking.]

I... don't mean to be too forward and please don't read anything into this, but would you like to go somewhere else? Maybe a bar or a liquor store? Or somewhere away from so many happy looking people?

[Her gaze falls on Jack and Ianto who currently look like the happiest and only couple on Earth. It's hard to watch.]

[Martha was prepared for Sam to say no. It was after all an odd request. But she is glad he is willing to leave. She nods and pauses long enough to grab her coat and the parcel containing the shirt Ianto got her. She luckily caught only Ianto's gaze as she left and gave him a wave and a thank you. He wouldn't read too much into anything.

Once outside, she turned up the collar of her coat and tucked her parcel under her arm so her hands could fit in her pockets easily.]

Are you more inclined to a bar setting or a house setting? Is anything even open do you think?

[Honestly, it's best that she doesn't bring attention to the fact she's leaving with Sam. She'll call later and give them a nice British lie about being tired.]

Hypervodka isan amazing drink that most humans probably shouldn't drink. Aside from the feeling of thousands of holes burning the back of your throat, just half a shot will get you pretty sloshed. Unless you've built up a tolerance that is.

[Her smile suggests that sy may just have built up some sort of tolerance.]

[He did catch that.] It sounds perfect. It also sounds like something you're probably right about them not serving. We'll have to make do with a lot of the regular stuff. [He's not normally one for just getting sloshed and he's not sure if he really will tonight either, but he's been working on holding things together the last couple of days and letting that responsibility go feels good.]

Singing? A karaoke bar without much singing on what's supposed to be Christmas? [She did grin at the though.] I doubt we're the only sad saps walking around going out for a drink. Someone's going to be singing.

[Then her smile turns a little devilish.] But that could be fun, and it's cover. Someone singing means we can sit in a corner and talk under the noise. Unless they force us to sing.

[She holds her coat closer, but that's all the clue she gives of being cold. Her coat is not anything to hold up to the cold, but Martha didn't want to go through the effort of finding a winter coat, especially since she had pretty much planned on going from home to clinic and back that day. Hadn't worked so well... but then, this was better than the Paradox year. She'd not had a parka then either and survived OK.]

Let's try Lyrical. Winery sounds too posh at the moment.

[She pauses before answering his next question. Everything they had discussed so far had pretty much been leading up to it. And it'd be nice to trust somebody. But it's never exactly something one wishes to tell people.]

[He stops so suddenly that Martha actually continues a step or two further before realizing he's stopped. She stops and turns, meeting his eyes for a few brief seconds before dropping her gaze. Her eyes tell him all he needs to know, but, feeling guilty, she can't hold his gaze. She doesn't know how to interpret his gaze, but she doubts it's good. Perhaps it had been a mistake to think about trusting him.]

Why would I lie about that? It was... it was hell. And it was my fault.

[She shuts her mouth then and tries to look him in the eye again. Martha wouldn't blame him if he decided to walk away. She probably would if she were him.]

I haven't told anyone...

[She begins to tell him, but stops as the enormity of that fact finally hits her. It had been years since the Paradox, and she hadn't discussed it with anyone. Not in any way that wasn't her being the strong one for someone else. And she certainly hadn't told Tom any of it. It's why he left her. He couldn't handle that there was some big secret between them. Maybe she should have told him. Perhaps he would have broken up with her before they got engaged. It would have saved her a lot of heart break.]

[Martha sees Sam put a hand out and almost takes it. Part of her wants to walk into that hug, but now is not the time. At least it shouldn't be. She's Martha Jones. She can get over it. Somehow. She looks to his eyes instead, deciphering their meaning. Is it too late to run away? Probably. Yes. She was the one who invited him to leave the party. It'd be pretty rotten to just ditch him now. She felt too exposed though. Martha's shoulder slump as she tries to hide the moment of weakness.]

C'mon... I could really use that drink.

Right.

...A drink sounds good. [He should tell her. Part of him even wants to tell her. The thought of saying it out loud to someone who doesn't already know sounds awful and freeing at the same time. Especially when it's something like this and he's pretty sure she'll understand. How could she not? But the words don't come. At least not just yet. He starts to walk again in the direction of that drink.]

[They enter the karaoke in silence. The warmth floods over Martha, almost painful as she gains feeling in her extremities. Someone is singing Silent Night badly off pitch. She grimaces and walks over to the bar, ordering the strongest thing they have. She doesn't care.]

There's a table back there. In the corner...

[She indicates the one that is almost in a blind spot to the stage. A good place to hide.]

[Sam just holds up two fingers to have them make another one for himself. He's more of a beer drinker, but tonight it feels deserved.] It looks good. [He settles down into one of the seats when they reach it. It is a good place to hide. Just not from the one you're with, yourself or your past. And what else do they really need to hide from tonight?]

Listen, about earlier I... [But whatever confession was coming gets cut off again as the bots appear to deliver the liquor. He passes one of them to her.] Here.
