Day 226 l Christmas Party Mingle
[Ianto has, predictably, gone a bit overboard for the Christmas party he and Jack are throwing. The entire apartment has been decorated; there's a tree with gold and silver ornaments and twinkling lights, garlands draped over doorways, candles in every window and festive nicknacks scattered about. It looks like something out of a magazine, and may make visitors a little afraid to actually touch anything. There's also a lot of mistletoe around (one of the side effects of living with Captain Jack Harkness) so it's probably a good idea to keep one eye on the ceiling at all times.

Of course he's made plenty of coffee and some appetizers, so he hopes people really do respond to the invitation Jack sent out, otherwise there are going to be a hell of a lot of leftovers.]

[Look at him missing jokes! It's a major holiday—or so say the wardens randomly—and he's feeling kind of alone right now. He was feeling that way before too, but the holiday has a way of punctuating it. Alone should be ideal. He can just put his head down and work on a way out. That's the goal. That's what's important—get home, stop the apocalypse. But he's been in this prison a long time and it's worn away some of that urgency of mission. It's opened him up in ways he didn't expect. It's left him caught somewhere between the life he lived and the life he could have. But most of all...it has him missing the obvious like the way of course Martha would know that. ~~Definitely not his mun missing cues! Never~~~

Of course now he's more focused on the many ways in which he doesn't know how to respond to hearing first that he's cute and second that Jack may be eyebrow lifting in his general direction.]

[Oh Sam. If anyone knew about alone and holiday, it was Martha right now. See, the previous Christmas with Tom just kept worming its way into her brain. It's why she was originally planning on not showing up to the party. It's why she's glad she knows Sam is taken. He reminds her too much of Tom, she's clearly attracted to him, and she would easily go home with him if he asked her to. Lonely and judgement impaired. It's why she has to stay away from the mistletoe in case someone does decide to take it at face value. And it's why she has to make jokes and keep up a jolly exterior. No one needs to know how much she hurts. ~~And her mun misses cues too sometimes so that's all OK...~~

But seeing as how she's left Sam in a state of confusion and possible distress, she decides to be good and give him assurance.]

Harmless flirting. He flirts with everyone. It's kind of a default setting for him.

[Yeah, about that taken... Elena is back with Damon. That's part of the alone sensation in addition to family, not that anything had ever been official between them and that was probably for the best, but...

But feelings.

Also, this "he flirts with everyone" thing doesn't really make him feel a ton better, but he's dealt with worse, right? Demons are worse. Especially flirty demons.]

I guess I should be paying more attention. I've been getting focused to the point of missing things.

To Jack? [It sounds ludicrous, but then, Martha's first meeting with Jack involved mouth to mouth resuscitation, and she was a bit of a flirt herself when she wanted to be. So Jack wasn't much of a threat.]

If he sees you really aren't interested, he'll probably leave you alone.
[Provided his 51st century pheromones don't kick in. She won't tell you about those Sam. You're already freaked out enough as it is.]

Besides, you have Elena, so that'll... probably make him stay away. Is she here?

[Yes, Martha will blunder right into that as she has no clue that they sort of aren't together anymore.]

[Martha had been expecting that radient smile Sam had at the beach party, or any smile. She wasn't expecting the look he had now. Or the words. She looks up at him with sympathy.]

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry. I... I'd give you some sort of cliche sounding words, but they haven't come true for me yet either, so I'll spare you that...

[He shakes his head.] It's better this way. [He'll be working on believing that, okay? She is several years younger. Still in high school in fact. And the women he's with...well, it never seems to end happily for them. They come from different worlds and they both have lives to get back to. There is really no end of reasons why it's good. It just doesn't feel good.] Don't worry about. Really.

[Martha falls silent for a beat while she collects her own thoughts and then it occurs to her he probably feels the same way about the party she does. She thinks about it for a moment more before asking.]

I... don't mean to be too forward and please don't read anything into this, but would you like to go somewhere else? Maybe a bar or a liquor store? Or somewhere away from so many happy looking people?

[Her gaze falls on Jack and Ianto who currently look like the happiest and only couple on Earth. It's hard to watch.]

[Martha was prepared for Sam to say no. It was after all an odd request. But she is glad he is willing to leave. She nods and pauses long enough to grab her coat and the parcel containing the shirt Ianto got her. She luckily caught only Ianto's gaze as she left and gave him a wave and a thank you. He wouldn't read too much into anything.

Once outside, she turned up the collar of her coat and tucked her parcel under her arm so her hands could fit in her pockets easily.]

Are you more inclined to a bar setting or a house setting? Is anything even open do you think?

[Honestly, it's best that she doesn't bring attention to the fact she's leaving with Sam. She'll call later and give them a nice British lie about being tired.]

Hypervodka isan amazing drink that most humans probably shouldn't drink. Aside from the feeling of thousands of holes burning the back of your throat, just half a shot will get you pretty sloshed. Unless you've built up a tolerance that is.

[Her smile suggests that sy may just have built up some sort of tolerance.]

[He did catch that.] It sounds perfect. It also sounds like something you're probably right about them not serving. We'll have to make do with a lot of the regular stuff. [He's not normally one for just getting sloshed and he's not sure if he really will tonight either, but he's been working on holding things together the last couple of days and letting that responsibility go feels good.]

Singing? A karaoke bar without much singing on what's supposed to be Christmas? [She did grin at the though.] I doubt we're the only sad saps walking around going out for a drink. Someone's going to be singing.

[Then her smile turns a little devilish.] But that could be fun, and it's cover. Someone singing means we can sit in a corner and talk under the noise. Unless they force us to sing.

[She holds her coat closer, but that's all the clue she gives of being cold. Her coat is not anything to hold up to the cold, but Martha didn't want to go through the effort of finding a winter coat, especially since she had pretty much planned on going from home to clinic and back that day. Hadn't worked so well... but then, this was better than the Paradox year. She'd not had a parka then either and survived OK.]

Let's try Lyrical. Winery sounds too posh at the moment.
