Class 003 : Day 224 : Werewolves
[Sam is a little nervous about today's class. The first two were easy enough. As far as he can tell there are no "real" ghosts in the prison and definitely no wendigos. Werewolves on the other hand? There's definitely one and he considers him a friend. He'd be lying if he said he didn't also consider him a threat. After all it wasn't that long ago he hurt Martha and maybe others when the prison played with their emotions. It wasn't Oz's fault, but it happened and it could happen again. It was something that resonated with him considering the way things ended with the subject of his case study.

If the teacher looks a little more affected by this particular lesson than he was by the first two, it's because he is. It's personal, but the fact that it can be a threat here makes it all the more important to get the information out there.]

Today's subject is werewolves. Before we start, I just want to remind everyone of the basics. I'm providing information researched in my world. It may or may not apply to any other werewolves you meet at home or here.

Overview : Werewolves

Werewolves are formerly human and still live as humans most of the time except during full moons when they transform. Where I'm from that means fangs, claws, and yellow eyes, but I know in some places they look more like wolves.

They change because at some point they were bitten by another werewolf and got infected. They might not even know they were changed. It's possible for them to transform, kill and change back without understanding what's happening to them or having memories of it.

When they're in wolf form their thinking becomes very basic and animalistic. Tehy want to hunt and kill. It could be opportunity or a drive from their subconscious that directs them where to attack. They're stronger, faster, and more agile. They've also got enhanced senses like a wolf.

[ WEREWOLVES ]

Case Study : Madison

We had a case in San Francisco. There was a rash of violent deaths and all signs were pointing to a werewolf. We met up with a woman named Madison. Her boss had just been killed and we suspected her ex-boyfriend. It turned out we needed to be protecting him from her. She had been infected by a neighbor, and had no idea she was killing people who had been problems for her. She even killed a police officer who had tried to stop her.

There was a theory that killing the sire would cure the victim from their lycanthropy, [He's definitely somber here.] but we managed to prove that wrong. After her sire died she spent one night in her human form and the next as a wolf. There's no known cure. [And he's not finishing the story of what happened to her next.]

Practical : Prevention and defense

The most important thing about werewolves is to never let them bite you. It's easier said than done, but it's important.

[He takes a deep breath.] Before I go into this next part I just want to remind everyone we are talking about a person—someone who was born human and lives more days as a human than a beast. Someone not in control of their actions, but still deadly to all those around them. [The most serious of faces, because he does not take this lightly.]

They are strong and hard to kill in wolf form. The most effective way to do it is with silver. It could be a silver dagger or bullet. It just needs to penetrate the heart, but bullets are better because it's a distance shot—less risk to you. It's said silver is related to the moon. That might be part of why it works.

[And a nod to Buffy's question last time, but without the literal nodding.] Dismemberment is also...effective. If they are killed in werewolf form they'll revert back to human when they die. [And on that note...]

	[Even with with weight of this class he can't quite help but smile at her approach. He was hoping to talk to her actually. Not because he had something to discuss so much as he's just come to really like talking to her among other things.] Hi. I'm glad you stayed. I don't think this was my most popular class. [ she can't help but notice the smile and return it, though her eyes flick down a moment at it. not because she's displeased or uncomfortable by it; quite the opposite. (it just doesn't change where her heart is.)

elena lets out a breath and sobers at the topic. she could tell and she gets it. (it didn't seem to be the easiest for him either.) ] It was an important one. There are plenty of people who know werewolves. Maybe even are. [ she thinks of tyler, naturally. what he might think of all this. she really doesn't know, but probably not anything entirely positive. they hadn't ever been entirely close, at least not through his transition. ]

[ she's doesn't think sitting down is the right answer. maybe because she doubts sam would really want her to stick around after. she blinks, pulls in a breath - ] No, I - [ the moment her eyes find is, she doesn't have the heart to keep saying no.

she doesn't want to do this. to hurt him, inadvertently push him away. elena doesn't want to lose him. she's not good at this, not graceful or... right. just like after her parents, she couldn't even break up with matt; she just stoped calling, stopped wanting... ] I'm back with Damon.

[He was not prepared for that. He wasn't expecting it. In fact he is silent, letting it process and reprocess through his brain, certain he heard it wrong or it means something other than what it sounds like.

When that thread of denial runs out he feels winded and it surprises him. He wasn't ready to call Elena his girlfriend. Nothing official had been done or said. They weren't ready for their matching wristbands and little more than an abundance of words and a selection of kisses had passed between them. It was still closer and more intimate than he'd allowed himself to be to anyone in a long time, and somewhere along the way even knowing that her feelings for Damon were still in play, he'd started to believe they were working toward something. No matter how impossible that is with their circumstances here and at home.

How about a side of long silence with your confession?]

I...

I didn't know you were even still talking to him.

[ he was right; even if her feelings for damon weren't different but something had played out differently... this was going somewhere. elena knows it, feels it, even though sam wasn't ready and she...

she made her choice.

she braces through the silence, gives it to him and lets her own emotions stew. doesn't say a word and watches it all play across his face, and waits. things with sam had never involved a commitment, but they had involved a connection. a friendship. a longing. the potential and discovery of more. elena realizes it's something she can't give him. (won't. not now, not when what she wants... who she wants. maybe not ever.

it hurts, and she can't know how it'll hurt him. she can only be honest.)

she never truly stopped talking to damon. or maybe she just never truly stopped being with him. ]

I never stopped. [ she doesn't mean -

it wasn't like - ] I didn't want to. [ that morning after the luau, when ric and jenna left, how he'd show up to bother her and she practically asked him to... it pains her to admit. for sam to hear. but it's the truth, about herself. ] But it wasn't - [ romantic. whatever equivalent there is between her and damon. not with that intention. not at first. (or maybe it was.) she exhales. is silent a moment. looks up at him. ] - now it is.

Are you sure this guy is even safe to be around, Elena? [It's a reach. He doesn't know much about Damon, but he was threatening enough in their conversation and Bonnie didn't give him a glowing report, so while it's not much to cling to it feels like a very good place to be putting his feelings right now. It definitely beats thinking about how this might not be happening at all if he'd either kept more distance like he knew he should have or ignored everything he "knew" and embraced all the things he wanted to do at the time.]

[ just like that. her lips pull back, in a frown, her eyes wide and full as her head tilts to the side. of course it wasn't 'just like that'; she's doesn't know what else she can say to explain. it's just how she feels.

but something changes in her hearing his question about damon. the line of her lips are worried by the flash in her eyes. he's not wrong. damon's not safe. but that's exactly sam's call for her either, or anyone's.

she breaks eye contact, softens just some, because it wasn't just like that: ] I never stopped wanting to be with him.

[Yes, he feels much better now. Every time they kissed she wanted to be with him.] That's... That's great. [His jaw tightens and the words come off as anything but sincere. There's hurt and anger brewing inside, but he doesn't want to project those at Elena. Maybe because she's so much younger. Maybe because sometimes he scares himself when he's angry and he never wants to scare her. Maybe it's just because this doesn't change how he feels—not really—and he cares about her. She makes (made?) this whole prison derailment better.]

[ she feels his hurt, and his anger; she hears it. she's not sure what to say, that there's anything she can. she shifts, and her voice is filled with sadness, longing... ] Sam... [ she wants to say it wasn't like that, and it wasn't - not like he thinks. (and how he thinks too, all at once.) but she knows explaining how much she does care about him and want him wouldn't help. it wouldn't change anything. ]

[She's trailing off, not even pushing the issue or tossing words at him that he's not ready for, but still he lifts a hand up to stop her because it still feels like a lot just hearing her say his name like that and seeing her eyes speaking volumes more.]

I'm not worried about me here. [Except he is. He isn't only worried about himself, but it's there.] I have a bad feeling about that guy. [Damon has lost name priviledges and will now be referred to as "that guy."]

[ he cares about her. he's seen or known or heard what damon is like. she gets that. she can't stop getting that; with caroline, with bonnie, with stefan and virtually everyone.

(she doesn't believe that, that he's not thinking about himself too. he's hurt, and she doesn't think it bleeds into his concern for her, but it's obvious it's there. she has no right to try to comfort him, and she won't.)

her lips thin, she shakes her head once to the side. the thing is, she's not going to explain this to sam. to anyone; she doesn't owe it to any bad feelings and she doesn't have to owe it to herself. her life is dangerous and it's here to stay. she chooses it; she wants it. wants it as much as anyone can being surrounded by it.

and she wants damon. dangerous, passionate, vicious damon who'd just as easily rip someone's heart out with his bare hands than tell her he loves her. (sometimes that's one and the same.) ]

And he's my choice.

Elena... [And that's where the lecture dies on his lips. You know, the one about how sometimes we want the things we shouldn't want. Need them. The lecture the stems very directly from having been with a certain demon named Ruby and accidentally starting the apocalypse because of it.

But he doesn't know Damon that well. He trusts his instincts and his instincts say the guy is bad news, but he has no proof to offer. Nothing he can be secure in. If he says anything right now he's just the guy who didn't quite have time to be a real ex.

So...maybe he should get some proof.]

If you are ever in any kind of trouble, I want you to call me. [For now he'll do this, as awkward as it feels. It isn't like he's about to head out on the open road for parts and cases unknown. He'll still be here, doing what he does and she'll be...just out of reach.]

[ she doesn't need the lecture, and she's glad she doesn't hear it. she's thought it, felt it, struggled with it. she loves damon, and she can't help it - doesn't need to anymore. doesn't want to.

she knows why sam is worried. knows he cares. knows this hurts him. but all she wants to give him is the truth and all she wants in return is respect. all she expects.

she looks down at his request; she knows why he offers it. she doesn't think of damon even if that's what he means - she thinks of klaus or someone comparatively dangerous. (and she doesn't want to put sam in harm's way.)

she looks up, nods. it's mostly for his comfort and out of some gratitude too.

then she pauses, the silence stretching between them. lets out an exhale. lets her eyes linger on him one last time before she steps back to leave. ]

[His throat tightens a bit. He feels like he should say something even if that something is just "bye," but that word more than any gets stuck. Instead, there's just a nod of his head—an understanding of sorts. He understands this thing that was developing is over now. He understands that it doesn't mean their friendship is. He understand she's leaving now because what's left to say?

Except everything.

But everything will have to wait. Maybe indefinitely. He gives her another look before turning away.]
