Day 223 | video - open
[ the feed clicks on, showing a very consternated young woman. and then off. and then on! off! on! off! betty has no idea what she's doing, but there's a switch and she's flipping it back and forth angrily because she can't tell whether it's on or off and didn't pay as close attention to her welcome speech as she should have. ]

Stupid, bloody -- [ off. on. ] -- piece of -- [ off. on. ] -- even is this -- [ off. on, steadily now that she's taken the damn thing off and looked at what she was doing. that helps! but now she looks like she's about to cry and is trying very hard to be stiff upper lip about it. ]

What kind of prison gives you some comic book gadget, anyway? [ she takes some deep breaths now that the battle of the weird head thing is over. deep and calming, leading to an awkward pause as she realizes just what was on that list of crimes. now she's afraid and offended. ]

You know, that list of crimes is a bunch of bunk. If they think building bombs to stop Hitler is a crime then they're a bunch of Nazis!

[ probably (most assuredly) not the best first impression, but the feed clicks off again before she has a chance to fix it. ]

[ betty huffs a little through her nose at 'ignorant,' but doesn't argue the point. ]

That obvious, huh?

I was involved in a scenario set in the 1940s. It was... very different from the setting that dominates this structure.

[ also known as that time hirogen took over the ship, hacked their brains, and made them think they were part of the french resistance in the middle of wwii. good times, good times. ]

Understatement of the century, Sheba.

[ or centuries, depending on who's counting. and not asking what a scenario is, because there is only so much she can process in one day. ]

Seven.

[ who is this sheba you speak of. she does not get your references, betty. ]

[ it means 'attractive woman,' but that's not the point. the point is, betty is confused. ]

Seven centuries?

Oh.

[ what kind of crummy future is it where people's names are numbers?? ]

That's it? Just 'Seven'?

Technically, my designation is Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One. Most prefer to call me Seven of Nine or just Seven.

[ little girls who grew up to be monsters through no choice of their own. ]

I'll use Sev, if that's okay. Just because I'm in prison doesn't mean I'm okay with calling people numbers.

[ it seems a fair compromise, and she doesn't want to know what kind of world would give a woman a name like that. ]

It was my designation prior to my imprisonment.

[ that lack of a response means she's okay with sev. but this is seriously her name... (no it's not but that's complicated and you don't want to know the story behind that, betts.) ]

Pretty cold way to name a person.

[ shakes her head, though. she really doesn't want to know how that came about, and letting sev get into it won't help her adjust to this place any better, either. ]

You know where I can find an empty place to live?

Yes. It was.

[ it was impersonal and closer to a filing system than it was a name. seven appreciated the efficiency of it, often utilizing designations for organizing crew members whenever put in charge of a project, but it was not a good naming system. if she were more comfortable with anyone beyond data using her actual name, she would've offered it. alas, she is not, and it's difficult to say if she ever will be. that little girl is gone. ]

There are small, streamlined complexes in this sector.

[ betty looks around at the buildings and kind of... shrinks. it's all still so foreign, but she figures she needs to just push through and get used to it. ]

I can manage with small.

[ for all she fails at understanding people, she sure is good at reading people. body language, behavior... borg perceptiveness doesn't fail her, a useful tool of a monster programmed to zoom in on a target, a victim. ]

Do not be frightened. You are relatively safe here. I assure you, the majority of the population means you no harm.

[ i am betty mcfuckingrae, i am the fiercest lesbian in all of toronto, i need no help because i'm self-sufficient and make all the best choices.

okay maybe not. ]

You are welcome. I understand how... alarming it can be, to be suddenly out of your element in a world you don't fully understand or see the point in.

[ really don't think life as a mindless drone to suddenly being an individual on a federation starship is quite the same thing, seven, but okay. as long as you think you can relate to people, good. this helps with your still really terrible people skills. ]

Oh, I see the point in it. Even makes a little sense, so long as I don't think about it too much.

[ this is freaky as all get out, but so much better than standing trial and potentially getting hung for being a murderer, sev, you don't understand. ]

Guess we all have to do it eventually, even if we don't want to.
