day 223 | i » video → open.
When I said I wanted to get out of Mystic Falls for a while, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Ruins of some ancient prison in Italy or China, maybe, but not underwater and in some alien dimension, or however the hell that's supposed to work. [ if he's getting the gist of this right. he's going by video game logic here. ]

And what happened to a trial by a jury of your peers? Is that not a thing on Planet X? Too human a concept for you? Is throwing eighteen-year-olds in prison for skipping a couple of classes back in high school [ and eradicating an entire vampire bloodline via staking finn mikaelson, but shhhh ] just something you do for fun around here?

[ just when things had calmed down and the world was returning to normal (or as normal as the world was capable of getting after everything that happened back home), this happens. it's just his luck, too. nothing ever stayed good for matt donovan. his life sucked, and it looks like graduating from high school meant it was only going to get suckier from here on out. ]

So much for the world tour.

I know. I saw.

[He holds up her glass for her to take so that she'll come over and sit down.]

I tried to find your conversation and it cut off and you were angry, so I assumed.

[He picks up his own drink.]

What happened?

He was defending Rebekah and got mad when I was mad about it. He said I was shallow for not giving her another chance. [ and stefan, you know how much she doesn't like being called shallow.]

...Matt was defending Rebekah.

[He was about to take another sip and had to pause in confusion. Because he'd spent some time here with the Original and knew that there were things about her that were not as bad as they seemed. But Rebekah had tried to kill Matt. Had given him the guilt when Elena had Stefan save him instead.

What could have possibly happened to make Matt give her another chance?]

Are you sure he wasn't compelled? Maybe before he came here?

Wouldn't it wear off here? [ because otherwise, yes! that has to be it.] Because that would explain so much. [ however a part of her feels guilty for not giving matt the benefit of the doubt even if what he's doing is crazy.]

I don't think we've ever had it happen. It's hard to say.

[He feels the same way, though. Especially since he doesn't hate her anymore, either.]

Clearly something happened, though. [A beat as he takes a sip of his drink.] I'm not sure if I want to know.

He won't tell you anyways. He wouldn't tell me what's happened, he said I wouldn't want to know. [ she huffs and takes another long sip.]

[Stefan rolls that around in his head for a moment, spinning the liquid in his glass.]

Well, that can't mean anything good, can it.

Not really. [ she sighs, annnnnoyed.] I just can't believe he hung up on me.

[He scoots a little closer, slipping his arm around her shoulder and coaxing her to lay her head on his shoulder.]

I know. Just remember that showing up here? It's not the easiest thing in the world. I'm sure he'll apologize.

I'm sure he is, Care. It's Matt. He wouldn't do anything to put you guys in danger. If he actually trusts Rebekah, then I'm sure he has a good reason.

[He nods. He gets it. So he reaches for the bottle of bourbon and refills her now nearly empty glass.]

I'm sure Matt's not fond of your choice in friends sometimes, either.

[Like Stefan himself. For instance. He's mostly trying to make a joke here, even if it's true.]

I'm just gonna get wasted and sleep on your couch. [ she downs her drink before standing a little shakily.] I feel like I'm the only one who makes sense anymore.

You can stay as long as you want. But I'm not letting you take the couch. You can have my bed, I'll crash here.

[Mr. Chilvarly, at his finest.]

Rebekah has...been better here, at least. I know she's capable of more than what she's shown us in the past. But for Matt to say those things? You're right, it doesn't make sense.

No way, I'm not taking your bed. I'm shorter, the couch is fine. [ she's not that much shorter but still.]

Rebekah is still the reason for what happened to Elena. [ foeverbitter.jpg ] I don't know what's going on with him.

I haven't forgotten.

[Nor entirely forgiven. But there was the matter of family, and as much as Stefan didn't like it, he understood why she'd done it.]

Arguing with him about it isn't going to help, and we don't have other options for getting it out of him.

[Like compulsion. Or torture. This isn't an enemy their dealing with. It's Matt.]
