[ dinner mingle! ]
[After a hard day's work, it's time for dinner. And there's food a cookin' in the shared kitchens of Squall Asylum. It might even smell better than you'd expect, because a bunch of rations put together makes a little more than a few cold potatoes alone. And face it, with Lacus around making wine out of water (or as close to it as possible, judging by the "feast") it's bound to be a good time.

So take forth your delicious food and eat as a group. After all, social interaction's awesome. We may not have beaches to luau on but the same people are hanging out and ought to stay closely knit despite the circumstances. Be a recluse if you want to, but you won't get far eating plain rice alone. Join in!

Dinner consists of an assortment of simple dishes prepared by Lacus creatively despite ration restrictions. Some of the dishes offered include a rice and beans dish, cabbage stew, fried rice with the veggies, and a very simple carrot bread.

And for you folks who go to the dark side, there will be a chicken dish as well though Rebecca will be giving it and partakers of it slightly irritated side glances for a multitude of reasons.]

(OOC: So if you didn't hear on day 221 ('yesterday'), Rebecca had been cheerfully suggesting a ration-share program to make a lot of something out of a little nothing. Whether you responded or not, feel free to hand wave if your character joined in by donating some of their rations to be made into meals likely at the hands of talented chef Lacus.

This mingle is solely about day 222 dinner, but also feel free to hand wave that breakfast and lunch were similarly made for those who participated. And if you didn't participate? Well, feel free to crash & eat your own food with the group or sneak a few bites. There might not be tons to go around, but it's doubtful anyone will turn you down.

[That's okay, she didn't need a heart. She didn't want to fight either, but it's been two long stressful days with precious little privacy and too many heavy thoughts. Of course they're both on edge, but then to see him just look defeated like that was hard to bear.

Her eyes linger on him a little longer and then she works on her food quietly even if she doesn't feel quiet on the inside.]

[ It's a hollow victory, if it can even be called that. On one hand he's grateful that she isn't pressing him harder, but on the other it makes the buzz inside his own head all the louder.

Seventy-five days. Not a long stretch of time by most standards and yet it feels closer to years by now. Too many things have happened over those not-quite-three months, things he might've been able to overcome had he had the same support system as he does back home but as good as Kitty is, she's not enough. Not even close.

It's not like back home. It's not a mistake in a profile or a risk that turned out to be too high. It's doing everything right and still ending up back at the beginning. It's painstakingly writing out every bit of information you risked your life to get and then do it all again and perhaps again and again until he finally gives up. It's about losing three weeks of work in the blink of an eye and now 73 days of work and it's about losing your unit chief and your best friend and every shred of stability you had in your life and then your grip on reality and eventually — very soon — it's about losing your mind.

For a heart-stopping moment he realizes that he wishes he hadn't flushed the dilaudid. Wishes Kitty had never seen it, on the off chance that they do make it back to an intact MarinaNova. It took him three months and a brush with an addiction relapse to get over Emily's death. He's lost two, perhaps even three team mates in less time than that and although they're not dead, chances are he'll never see them again. Might as well be gone. How long until the next? How long until Garcia leaves too — she was the first aside from him and now he's just waiting to discover that she's gone.

If she was ever here. If any of this even happened.

He's quiet for a long, long time. Pokes at the food on his plate, shuffling it around before finally giving up. Pushing the plate away, he gets up on his feet. Ready to leave. ]

I need some air.

[The spin of her thoughts these past two days haven't been around loss of people, reality, or mind. She's been considering the situation and what it's weaknesses and strengths might be. How can they exploit what they are hypothesizing? There's definitely an off ramp for darker ponderings, but it isn't the same scale as what Reid is thinking. She's not so unfamiliar with "this kind of thing." Besides, if she really is in her body right now then it's held up pretty well for that much rest. She was able to stand immediately and walk. They are being well kept at least. She already feels better and stronger today than she did yesterday. She doesn't have to imagine herself falling into immediate decay if they don't find a solution fast.]

I'll come with you.

[No, it didn't feel like an invitation. She thinks he wants to be alone. Maybe even needs to be alone, but it scares her. He doesn't handle things the way she does. Maybe neither of them are good at it, but its different kinds of bad at least, and right now she's worried.

She joins him, standing and plate-less. A hand out for his because it's natural, familiar, comforting and right now hopeful.]

[ She isn't unfamiliar with "this kind of thing" just like he isn't unfamiliar with mental illness. They draw their own parallells and where she's all action, he's always been pure thought. It's his job, getting into the minds of criminals and that's not something you can just turn off just because the mind you end up in happens to be your own.

He hesitates for a moment as she stands to join him, but although he doesn't take her hand (can't, not now) he accepts with a nod. Okay. Let's go. ]

[He didn't refuse her. Didn't argue he needed to be by himself. Didn't leave without acknowledgment.

But it does hurt as she slowly lowers her hand to fall into step beside him. It is now the loneliest of all hands never mind the fact she'd been walking for years on her own with no one to hold it or that the whole practice was one of the more juvenile parts of their relationship.]

[ He remains quiet as he makes his way across the courtyard, not stopping until he's just outside the main compound. With everyone eating or washing up or already asleep, you don't have to go much further to get some semblance of privacy.

There's a sigh as he tilts his head back to look at the sky. Actual sky this time, as concealed with thunderclouds as it is. Not water. ]

And another contrast from silent to spoken.] I was afraid of storms when I was a kid. I used to run into mom and dad's room, somehow sure they could keep me safe from the lightning and wind.
