Day 220 Action | Video Open
[Evening falls, finding Eric at the Blood Shack as per usual. There's a bit of a subdued manner about the entire place as well as it's host. There are hurricane lanterns lit and scattered about the room. In preparation for 'what if' there are large tubs with ice in them. Bottles of beer, soda, water and even liquor are sunk down into the ice. There's a chalkboard menu behind the bar advertising Hurricanes, Blood Hurricanes and a small assortment of bar food: pizza, buffalo wings, cheese sticks and something called a Blooming Onion that Spike seemed to have an affinity for. It's all takeout, purchased and arranged for ahead of time rather than anything remotely fresh. Few people know how to prepare for a disaster like residents of Louisiana or thousand year old vampires.

He addresses the video screen with a charming smile and a dry tone.]

The Blood Shack is, of course, open for business. I've taken the liberty of preparing for the worst. Do come by and have a hurricane or a bloody hurricane with us. [If you can't guess what a bloody hurricane is, you don't want to ask] To borrow a famous British motto during a disaster: Keep calm and carry on.

You've got a point where the storm known as a hurricane is concerned. However, humans in New Orleans have a drink called a hurricane. Here, I've discovered a number of vampires like their blood with some alcohol. I took it upon myself to develop a Bloody Hurricane drink.

Oh. [Her breath catches for a moment, but then she relaxes. He didn't say she wasn't human. He didn't say anything that someone else might here and guess about. She's fine. Eric always seems careful with her.]

Sorry. I shouldn't have assumed. ...A lot of drinking happens here. [Just not the kind she would have expected when she heard of how many vampires might be in the prison.]

[He does try to respect one's choice to be 'in the coffin' so to speak.]

Indeed it does. Humans traditionally seem to turn to alcohol in times of distress. That seems to hold true for the other species here.

["In the attic" would be a better phrase for her. What he says makes sense though.]

Does it work?

Briefly, but it's simply a distraction and not a solution.

That sounds like avoiding the problem instead of trying to fix it.

That's precisely what it is, and yet it seems to be a human's preferred method of coping.

[She thinks about it and tries to make sense of it. Her father had liked to drink too. Maybe he had been trying to coping. Sometimes, she would smell alcohol on him when he came. Not always, but whenever she did it was strong. She hated it.]

Sometimes people are afraid to fix the problem. I don't think it helps to run away...but there isn't anything we can do about it.

[Having a child turned into a vampire would be quite difficult to deal with.]

Yes, sometimes a problem can seem insurmountable, but you are correct. Running away does not help. However, it is my job to enable that coping method, at least here.

[He really likes Klara and Eric doesn't like most children, but Klara is insightful and intelligent. She is unlike most children he knows and she reminds him more of his daughter all the time.]

You are good at your job. [She's had an additional twenty years that most children never get to try and make sense of what little of the world she was allowed to experience. It's given her an unique perspective.]

Am I still allowed there even tonight even if I don't intend to drink? [She's already had enough. She's still getting used to blood being readily available.]

Thank you. [An old fashioned half sort of bow.]

Of course. You are my guest and are allowed to be here at any time you wish whether I'm here or not.

...I am? [That kind of invitation isn't what she expected. Not that she really knows what she was expecting, but not this. Maybe she shouldn't be, but she is. Everything about Eric surprises her.]

Of course. [he gives her a bit of a confused look.]

Do you live by yourself, Klara? And do you manage all right? [Because he suspects she does, but he could be wrong.]

I manage fine. [Meaning yes she lives on her own.] It's not like it takes much to pick up after yourself. The robots do the laundry.

[There's a pause. She's been received these offers left and right since she arrived. Of them, Eric seems to be the one she can speak more candidly with. He knows she's a vampire. He doesn't see her as a monster because he understands.]

I know. Thank you. But I'm okay. [As okay as she can be so far.]

[He nods.]

Very well then. Be careful during whatever it is that's going on here.

[He won't push, nor will he underestimate her because she looks like a child. Once upon a time, child vampires were fairly 'normal' in his world. It was a practice that died out because child vampires never worked out well. ]
