[ It's the first annual monthly bi-weekly — it's the first Memorial Garden Committee meeting! The invitations have been sent, a couple of park benches in Sector 0 have been claimed and there's even a few plates of home-made cookies put out in case the allure of fast food on a stick wasn't enough. How can you resist? That's right, you can't!

The instigator to all this is pretty nervous but once the clock strikes noon he clears his throat and kicks off the meeting the only way he can. ]

Alright, so… some of all y'all might remember me talkin' 'bout puttin' together a Memorial Garden for all our friends who've disappeared a while back. Now, I know we already got some o' that stuff 'round here but this would be somethin' we'd create all on our own. We'd decide what t' plant in it an' tend to it an' pool our rehab points together to get seeds an' plants or whatever else we need.

There ain't no pressure to help out. We do what we can, alright? What we're good at. I'm happy to help anyone who don't know how t' grow things an' wants to learn, but th' important part is that we all get a chance to have a say in this. This is where this comes in. Just write down your ideas an' we'll gather it all up an' make sure everyone gets somethin' they want.

[ He gestures to a SUGGESTION BOX set out with a stack of paper and some pens for all your suggestive needs. ]

Alright... that's all I had t' say. You go on an' talk amongst yourselves an' have fun!

(ooc: Mingle! Socialize to your hearts content, whether you got an invitation to the meeting or not. Notifs are off but Aidan has a thread HERE if you want to hit him up specifically! Feel free to let your character leave serious ideas for the memorial garden (or just troll the hell out of it) in the suggestion box HERE ! ))

[ She was there for Steve, for Bucky (though she was yet to discover that absence) and every other man and woman she had seen fall in war time and prison. It was the least she could do. After listening to Aidan's speech, she turned to the nearest interested party and smiled. ]

So what would you like to plant? I think I may start with a few tomatoes, myself. There's nothing quite like a home cooked meal to welcome a friend back, wouldn't you agree?

I was thinking more like flowers, but I could definitely buy what you're selling. I love me some veggies. I wonder if the weather's right for eggplant? [Combined with some good tofu she can make a mean Parmesan.]

You thinking marinara sauce or just slicing the suckers up?

[ she may find Garcia's way of talking a little difficult to follow at time, but the decisiveness was certainly a trait she could appreciate. Turning to more fully face the woman, Peggy answered truthfully ]

I was actually thinking of a caprese salad, but I would never say no to a well made tomato sauce. In light of that, we should consider planting some herbs. Garlic and Basil, for instance. Of course we may need a bigger plot of land for all of that.

[ which of course was the dilemma. ]

Garlic takes kind of a long time to grow, doesn't it? I mean I'm not expert, but being from California it's sort of a local industry. I'm pretty sure garlic takes like six months to fully grow.

[Hmm... she's nothing if not good at finding dietary alternatives, since being a veggie means shifting some things around.]

What about chives? They're sort of garlicky, some kinds, and they're easier to sprout.

[ Peggy's smile was a tad ironic as she answered. ] Even if that's true, we have no way of knowing how long we'll be here. In six months we may be glad to have a crop to harvest.

[ but Peggy turned back to the other suggestions and she nodded thoughtfully ] Chives would be a decent alternative, and with the right planning, we should be able to incorporate a whole armada of fresh herbs and vegetables. And we can certainly plant more later if it turns into a success.

Point taken. I guess I'm just trying to be optimistic that we won't have a six-month anniversary here. But if we do, some fresh garlic would be nice! [Also in the spirit of optimism!]

Sounds like you've got some big plans. I guess what's the use in letting all this artificial sunlight go to waste, huh?

[ Peggy simply shook her head, clasping her hands lightly in front of her ] I'm afraid my plans are simply that; this is supposed to be a group effort after all. It just reminds me of the gardens back home; every house had one, to help with the war effort.

Really? I mean, I believe you, but I always thought the war effort was, like, donating brass and Rosie Rivets and all that. How did gardens help out?

[Sorry Peggy, you're now a walking history lesson.]

It's really quite simple. If each family grew their own food, then that allowed the farmers to send every morsel of food leftover to feed our troops. An army does not feed itself, after all.

[ and for Peggy, it is still an all too real reality. ]

Wow. I mean really, wow. You never learn that kind of thing in the history books. It's all Pearl Harbor and D-Day.

[She's enrapt, really. Who doesn't love history?]

I mean -- you probably don't wanna talk about it, sorry. It's just for me, that's a huge turning point in American history. You wouldn't believe what's gone on since then.

{ Peggy smiled wryly and took a look around the gardens and the dome even further out on the horizon. ]

I think I've begun to get an inkling. The books here are actually quite informative for all that the summaries are brief. But no, it's quite all right. To refuse to speak at all of the war is to do it a disservice. It's my hope man will never forget the losses we suffered.

[Ah good, she's not offended. Garcia has a tendency to let her mouth run away with her and she knows it but can't seem to stop it.]

Trust me, we never did. Talking about the Holocaust is like the thing that brings up the strongest feelings in people, even in 2012.

[ Peggy shifted, suddenly ill at ease the longer Penelope spoke. ]

You mean to say they don't view it as the tragedy that it was?

No no, it totally is! Or was! I just meant that people sort of think it's the BIGGEST tragedy, so all other things are compared to it, and there's still fear of history repeating itself.

[Pardon her backpedaling, but she doesn't want to be disrespectful on this point!]

[ She was still unsure, but... ] When it's still fresh in the minds of those who have lived it, I'm afraid there can be not greater tragedy. But there's no need to be worried. Time will tell how the events of the past play out tomorrow.

For all of us.
