Well, that was unexpected.

[ the very confident and ultimately extremely british voice sounds rather less frightened than it likely should, considering the person attached to it just got told she's in prison for the rest of her life. helen's not really buying that. let them try to keep her here. ]

I have to say -- [ she raises her voice just slightly, as though speaking to the communicator isn't enough. she'd like to catch the attention of the "wardens," if possible. ] -- I usually favor face-to-face discussions, like civilized adults. None of this "enjoy your stay" from afar.

[ she supposes it could be worse. she could be stuck in a prison with addison. she pauses for a moment to internally shudder at that. dear god, if addison's here, she'll probably throw something.

at some point she'll drop the bite to her voice, but that point isn't right now. ]

I suppose the term "extenuating circumstances" means little to you. Allow me to let you in on a little secret: the last time someone tried to hold me hostage against my will, a friend and I blew them up. I'd rather not have the same happen here.

[ and with that, she cuts the communication. bait set. time to see who bites. ]

[ she's got a retort all ready on the tip of her tongue when she realizes that voice is actually a very familiar one. she pauses, caught between a few reactions at knowing he's here. on the one hand, she's actually glad to have a familiar and trusted person here. on the other, she hasn't actually spoken to him as herself in over a century, not since he left after they returned from the ruins of afina's court. on a third side, she wonders what he'd been getting up to without her. and on a fourth, she wonders if this is actually nikola or just someone who sounds like him and apparently knows her.

when she finally responds, her voice is cautious. one might say she sounds hesitant if one didn't know her. ]

He's been doing wonderfully without my guiding hand. [ pause. ] What are you doing here? [ she's not asking that because she wants to know what "crimes" got him into this prison. she's asking to find out if he's been up to anything lately. ]

Not being punished for blowing up a priceless Praxian artifact, that's for sure. Though, something tells that has something to do with why you're here. What'd you destroy this time, Helen? La Gioconda?

None of this moral grey area, I see. Well that makes it decidedly more difficult, doesn't it? [ but not impossible. she's not giving up yet. ] The trouble with such strict definitions is that it completely undermines intentions. Bad things happening for good reasons or good things happening for bad reasons.

[ not that she's claiming one or the other. mostly she's trying to work the situation, get as much info as she can, and then find a way back out. she has a sanctuary to run, after all. ]
