day 219: voice | open
Well, that was unexpected.

[ the very confident and ultimately extremely british voice sounds rather less frightened than it likely should, considering the person attached to it just got told she's in prison for the rest of her life. helen's not really buying that. let them try to keep her here. ]

I have to say -- [ she raises her voice just slightly, as though speaking to the communicator isn't enough. she'd like to catch the attention of the "wardens," if possible. ] -- I usually favor face-to-face discussions, like civilized adults. None of this "enjoy your stay" from afar.

[ she supposes it could be worse. she could be stuck in a prison with addison. she pauses for a moment to internally shudder at that. dear god, if addison's here, she'll probably throw something.

at some point she'll drop the bite to her voice, but that point isn't right now. ]

I suppose the term "extenuating circumstances" means little to you. Allow me to let you in on a little secret: the last time someone tried to hold me hostage against my will, a friend and I blew them up. I'd rather not have the same happen here.

[ and with that, she cuts the communication. bait set. time to see who bites. ]

So I'm not the only one who believes in the moral grey area? Good to know.

Seems to me if you get out, travel much, see things, do things...you figger out that most times there's a gray area.

Indeed. You'd think these all-knowing wardens would know that as well. It's a good life lesson to have and I'm glad I'm not the only one who's learned it.

[ she pauses for a moment. ]

I assume you're a traveler? [ someone who gets out and sees things, anyway. ]

Think you'll find lotsa people here that have. Just not the Wardens.

[She nods a little.] Used to be. Yeah. What'd you do?

What makes them think they have the right to force such judgment on everyone they haven't even met?

[ angry about this? just a little bit. ]

Worked as a conservationist, mostly. [ that is one big, fat lie. okay maybe not that big, it's definitely a lie and she's sticking to it. ] Sometimes you have to break a few laws in order to save lives.

Your guess is as good as mine.

[Rose nods.] Conservationist of what? And yeah, you do. The whole circumstantial thing.

[ oh she's starting to like this girl. her voice starts to lose the bite it had to it, growing calmer and a bit more gentle. ]

Endangered species, mostly, all sorts. Personally, I tend to think saving lives, especially as a conservationist, outweighs the need to keep all laws intact. [ says the woman known for blowing things and people up if they're stupid enough to threaten innocent lives. ]

[ rose notices the change in her voice and assumes she's settling down. ]

Gotta say I agree. Not everybody sees it that way though. Guess you've had some experience with that.

[ she knowingly endangered whole universes to get to the doctor so she understands ]

More than a little, I'll admit. It seems to me that they care more about the actions than the motivations behind those actions. "Misunderstandings" could be an entire section of my supposed "crime list."

[ she's just. not going to acknowledge the "mass murder" charge. that one was actually legitimate, but again with the extenuating circumstances. she wouldn't have knowingly done it if she'd had any other choice. ]

I wouldn't say mine were so much misunderstandin's as 'it had to be done for the greater good' sorta thing.

[Rose won't mention that all that mucking about with time and jumping parallel worlds at the risk of destroying them was about getting the Doctor back and saving him rather than actually saving the world. That'd been a side effect of her real goal.]

A lot of mine were the same, though I have a feeling our wardens would consider that a misunderstanding.

[ they're annoying little pests in helen's opinion and they really need to stop looking at the universes in black and white. ]

A mistunderstandin' that's worth life imprisonment. There's not much room for negotiation with 'em.

It would seem not. At least I can see I'm not the only one who believes we've been wrongly accused of a good deal of this.

In any case, I don't believe we've been properly introduced. My name is Helen Magnus.

As did I. I believe we were too interested in discussing our views on our current situation. [ she's sounding a lot more relaxed now. good job, rose. ] It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Tyler.

It's sorta the elephant in the room, isn't it? [Oh excellent. Relaxing is good.] Just Rose is fine with me. It's nice to meet you too.

That it is. Good to know it isn't avoided by absolutely everyone.

Rose, then. The sentiment is the same. [ in that case, call her helen, rose. she won't mind too much. of course "magnus" always works and she's far more used to being called by her last name, but she understands that most people work on first names or with titles. ]

At this point, I believe I'll be joining their number. Can't say I'm content to stay somewhere I didn't willingly go and it'll help keep me occupied.

You'll want to talk to Kitty about the investigative team with the Defence Force.
