Day 218 Action: Open
Since Rose left to go back to her own apartment and with Ianto and Jack busy doing what she suspected they were doing, Martha had spent quite a bit of time by herself. She'd gone to the one Investigation Team meeting, but mainly stayed to the outskirts watching and observing. Today she was running errands.

Her day started with a trip to the library. After picking up three books, she made her way to the sector three gardens. Martha had taken up meditation, and though she wasn't very good at it yet, it was helping her calm her mind and think through her predicament. If one were to stumble across her at the library, they'd find her in the medical section or the self-help section. In the gardens, she found a quiet spot to meditate. Most noticeable about her were the three lines of stitches on the back of her arm starting near her wrist and disappearing under her sleeve. Second most notable were the books either in her arms or next to her on the ground: two on advanced medical knowledge and a self-help book on losing one's fiance.

Martha smiles at the younger woman as she skips up and tips her stack of books to show the first one, a treatise on brain chemistry. Incidentally, tipping the stack the way she does hides the bottom book from view but reveals the stitches on her arms. Those are easier to explain.

"If I have infinite time, I might as well learn more. And then if we ever find a way out, I could get multiple qualifications. How are you Dawn? Looking for something specific?"

"Oooo a little light reading?" She understands wanting to learn things. She and Martha can bond over reading and learning all the things. It's actually one of the positives of being here and Dawn is actually glad there's a bright side... one or two bright sides.

Of course then she also notices the stitches on Martha's arm and a look of concern is suddenly there. "Ohmigosh. What happened? A brain-type of accident?" She's going with the theme of the book.

Martha laughs at the idea of brain chemistry being light reading and nods along. Then her brow furrows? Right. "The stitches? Not a brain accident. Honestly, that'd be a bit freaky if a brain accident caused that. Unless you're not imagining a giant brain running around like I am. Then maybe it's entirely possible."

No, Martha didn't answer the question. She's hoping for some misdirection with the idea of giant brains.

She was joking about it being light reading and is glad that it gets a laugh. And for a moment, she's easily diverted to another topic. "I've seen brains in jars before. In a science class, not in a creepy brain collector way. But I bet there are people out there who do the brain collecting."

Her nose wrinkles. "Which... ew. Right? Like what's wrong with stamps or baseball cards?"

"Or spoons. Spoons are nice and innocuous," Martha added. "Though I'm sure neurologists have brains. If we could get brains from prehistorical homonids, it would be quite fascinating."

She shrugs. "I'm just a trauma surgeon. But the brain has always fascinated me," she continues by way of explanation for the brain books, and to add that she's not creepy enough to start a brain collection.

"Spoons are cool. So are sporks. I used to have this really cool sticker collection back in the Sunnydale days. It all got cratered though so now I try to live light instead of hoarding the things." Because in her world, everything could go downhill at any time. "And can I just add that the Kindle was the best invention ever cause all my books in one easy accessible and portable electronic device. Pretty cool."

She nods. "Brain stuff is super interesting. Part of learning what makes people tick. I think the psychological stuff is interesting more than the medical side. Brain surgery would be scary... both in the doing and the having."

"Your stuff got cratere?" Martha askes as she tries to make sense of the comment. "Was there an asteroid?"

"More like a destroyed Hellmouth beneath it. There are Hellmouths in certain spots around the world where supernatural activity is like... way higher than in other places. The activity is bigger cause there's actually a portal in those locations where the veil between Earth and Hell dimensions are super weak. Demons and various other ooglie booglies can sense this and they kind of congregate in those places." She's rambling the description, reciting it like she's done it many times before.

"We lived on top of one and someone tried to open it. My sister destroyed it and when that one Hellmouth on top of Sunnydale took the entire town with it when it was destroyed. It's a big crater in the ground now."

"Oh! You're from a supernatural world. Er... a world with supernatural things. We don't have them in my world. We have aliens instead. In fact, the hospital I work at ended up on the moon once.

"But... the Hellmouth, did everyone get out of the city all right?"

"Oh, yeah they did. The city was abandoned except for us by the time we closed the Hellmouth. People tend to flee crazy when it gets to be a minute-by-minute thing that's happening. Wonky Hellmouths are all about the crazy-making."

She is so completely impressed with the moon thing though, and it shows on her face. "Aliens are cool. We have those too. Although sometimes it's easy to confuse one for the other. But one of my friends travels around with some aliens. Kind of gross looking bug types of aliens." Her nose wrinkled. "What was the moon like? Cheesy?"

Martha was busy trying to get a word in edgewise about the Hellmouth when Dawn began talking about aliens and then asked if the moon was Cheesy.

"Cheesy?" she asked stupidly as her brain caught up. "No... dusty I assume. There was an air bubble around the hospital... I wasn't able to leave."

She was completely kidding about the cheesy comment. But she's caught on lately that a lot of people don't get her humor. "Were there people on the moon in the hospital? Were they called moon-ians?" She's more or less prompting her to expand on the interesting story.

"Actually," Martha grinned, "there was an alien in the hospital, and the executive branch of the Universe transported us there because the moon is neutral territory but the Earth is protected by the Shadow Proclamation.

"The Executive Branch is a race of aliens that look like giant rhinos called the Judoon. And pretty much everyone in the hospital panicked which was probably not the best for a number of very sick people. But the problem was the alien... she drank blood. But not like a vampire type of blood drinking... more like through a bendy straw. And she drank through the one guy to turn herself human so the Judoon wouldn't catch her which caused a lot of trouble."

Martha had no trouble telling this story. It was her first time off planet. It was when she met the Doctor. And everything turned out all right in the end.

Wait. Okay, wait. Dawn is all the impressed and it's obvious that she is since Dawn wears everything on her sleeve for all to see. "There's an Executive Branch of your Universe???" She's gaping, wondering how closely they might be related to their PTB's or Wolfram and Hart. "That is so cool."

And then she's smiling because of where her mind is taking her. "Can you imagine the job application?"

"Must have head of a rhino..." Martha ticked off, giggling as she said it. "And yes, the Shadow Proclamation it's called. I don't know who actually runs it, but the Judoon are the police.

"They're not all that cool though. I mean, they're like real policemen. But more trigger happy."

Dawn is smiling brightly, halfway thinking Martha might be kidding about the rhino head and halfway taking her seriously. Really, she's seen and heard of stranger things. But she is completely digging this whole Shadow Proclamation thing. "Policemen of space! They probably have to be happy with the trigger just in case they run into aliens hell bent on... hellish things. Sometimes when there's world in peril kind of stuff going on it's best to attack first and ask questions later. Only in your world in peril stuff it sounds like it's the whole solar system! Or... the universe?"

Martha pauses a beat before continuing. "Yes, the entire Universe has been in peril before. But what about you? You have vampires and other things... like the things Sam talks about in his class."
