Day 218 Action: Open
Since Rose left to go back to her own apartment and with Ianto and Jack busy doing what she suspected they were doing, Martha had spent quite a bit of time by herself. She'd gone to the one Investigation Team meeting, but mainly stayed to the outskirts watching and observing. Today she was running errands.

Her day started with a trip to the library. After picking up three books, she made her way to the sector three gardens. Martha had taken up meditation, and though she wasn't very good at it yet, it was helping her calm her mind and think through her predicament. If one were to stumble across her at the library, they'd find her in the medical section or the self-help section. In the gardens, she found a quiet spot to meditate. Most noticeable about her were the three lines of stitches on the back of her arm starting near her wrist and disappearing under her sleeve. Second most notable were the books either in her arms or next to her on the ground: two on advanced medical knowledge and a self-help book on losing one's fiance.

Martha looked a tiny bit confused at the question before her eyes snapped down and noticed the stitches as well. Right. She'd have to get better about covering those! She wasn't sure how much Rose would know about the truth, and she didn't really want to cause untoward panic as there'd been no other reports of a giant wolf.

"I was part of some giant dog's game of prey it seems. It underestimated me." She tried to keep her tone light, as though it were no big deal and that she hadn't been scared for her life in those moments.

"I'm glad that you were able to get away." Her first thought was a werewolf, not a big dog. Perhaps she was stretching the truth for Rose's sake but she wasn't a stranger to supernatural creatures.

She remembered getting bitten by a werewolf and how she suffered for it. A bite from one was fatal to a vampire but Rose didn't know if a werewolf from another world could have the same effect.

"When did it happen?"

Martha is fairly certain what attacked her was a werewolf, though whether it was supernatural or alien was still up for debate. However, she's not one to incite panic.

"Five days ago. Really, all it did was knock me to the ground and scratch me up a bit. Thankfully I didn't get bit."

"But you still needed stitches." In other words, the scratches must have been really deep. Perhaps the wardens weren't keeping an eye on things if they let it happen in the first place.

Another thing occurred to her.

"How did you get away from it?" Wolves were strong and fierce so unless she was armed, she wouldn't stand much of a chance against one.

Martha shrugged, "And in a week or so the stitches will go away. In fact, I'll probably take them out myself." She really was trying to act nonchalant about the whole thing. Other people knew what was happening and on the lookout. She wasn't too worried.

She smiled at the next question. "Like I said, it underestimated me. I ran inside the bowling alley and blocked the door with a trash can. The creature seemed to have issues getting inside with that and went away." Martha didn't actually like thrills that were quite so dangerous, but it was gratifying that she could get away from the dangers. Especially when she was 5'2" and looked fairly helpless.

"Ah, so you've had medical training then?" Impressive. Not that Rose ever needed medical treatment because she healed instantly from any wounds that were inflicted upon her due to being a vampire. More importantly though, it would be difficult to explain to a doctor why she had no heartbeat.

She listened carefully to her explanation. "Very clever. Good use of whatever was around you at the time." Rose would run away as fast as she could from the werewolf because her experience with them wasn't a good one and she didn't want to get bitten again.

Rose also knew that appearances could be deceiving. Martha seemed capable of taking care of herself.

Martha nodded and showed tipped her books a little so Rose could see the top one which was about brain chemistry. "I'm a trauma surgeon mostly, but since I'm here now, I might as well learn what I can."

She looked abashed then as Rose complimented her. "I've had some experience with being chased. Things are usually faster than me so I tend to improvise a lot." Really, Martha is not remarkable, not in her mind anyway. She's only fixed her mistakes and done what she could to keep others alive. Usually.

"You're the first surgeon I've met." She replied, taking a good look at the book, noting the title and what it was about. "But I agree with you about learning. I've been studying a few of the history books here myself."

Interesting. Rose has had experience with running away for most of her life. "Nothing wrong with a little improvisation from time to time. When you haven't got much else around to help you, you just have to rely on it." The majority of humans were remarkable to Rose. Their spirit and determination throughout difficult times. She could admire that and it had taken Rose a long time to realise just how much respect she had for them.

"History is a fascinating subject. But I've had plenty of hands on experience with it. What have you been studying lately?"

Martha was happy to jump on a subject that wasn't herself. And if they could find a common time that Martha had lived in for a while, well that would be better!

I just remembered that there are no history books in the library so I'm replying again

"Nothing really. There doesn't seem to be any history books in the library at all, much to my disappointment."

Which was a real downer in Rose's opinion but she could probably find some other books to keep her occupied.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Good catch. I'm constantly checking rules to make sure I'm OK...

Martha frowned. "No history books? That seems rather absurd. Unless there's things in the books they don't want us knowing. Are the historical fiction books gone too?" Because really, if they're banning history books, they have to ban historical fiction, and then there's hardly any fiction left to read.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

I really should do that more often myself.

"It does, doesn't it?" But then the bots did a lot of strange things here so maybe it wasn't entirely implausible. "I think you may be on to something there. Perhaps they don't want us to have access to them for that reason." At her second question, Rose paused for a moment. "You know, I never actually checked them."

"Let's go check!" Martha exclaimed. "Maybe classics? Like Oliver Twist, or Pride and Prejudice, or Little Women." Martha looked for the nearest catalog to start looking.

"Not that it's entirely accurate, and actually the ones written in those periods will be more accurate than anything written from the present, whatever your present may be. But at least it's something..."

Her enthusiasm was amusing but it proved to be a good distraction. "No harm in trying, right?" She joined Martha at the catalog to help her.

"My present is the year 2011 so really not that far in the past." Which was a lie because Rose had lived through the periods the books were written in and about, remembering those eras all too clearly. She just didn't want to reveal to Martha what she was.

"You're a couple years ahead of me then," Martha replied. "I'm from 2009." She wasn't really willing to admit she'd been to other eras as well. Though her reasons were different from Rose's. Martha just found that explaining she was a time traveler was sometimes difficult.

"Not too much of a time difference then. I've come to realise that there are people here from the past, possibly even the future. Incredible." Not that Rose has met them all but she was aware of it from others talking about it.

"Definitely met one of the ones from the future," Martha said with a smile. "Though he doesn't always talk about it. Haven't met many from the past. At least not from a past distant from mine."

"I'm not sure I would ever want to know about the future," she replied, taking a moment to glance through the books before looking back to her. "Just how far into the future out of curiosity?"

Martha smiles. "He says 51st century. I don't mind knowing about it as long as it's not in my lifetime."

[Aside from the fact that crossing timelines can be sticky...]

One of her eyebrows raise. "That's quite far ahead from the both of us." Rose could say a lot about the past but that was about it.

Another thought occurs to her shortly after she spoke. "He's a time traveller, then?"

Rose joins in on the laughter. "I met someone here a while ago who said he was a time traveler. Called himself 'The Doctor'. You wouldn't happen to know him, would you?"

Martha's grin fades just slightly at the name. She didn't get to see him much when he was around, and she really regrets that now that he's gone. But she smiles again and nods. "He was one of my best friends outside this place."

"Oh." She replies quietly, wondering if she should have even mentioned it in the first place. "You might see him again someday. Either in here or back home." Rose hopes that it may be a comfort to her but she wouldn't know for sure until she heard what Martha had to say.

Martha nodded. "Hopefully back home. As much as I'd love to see him here, I also don't want him stuck here. It feels selfish to want him here for comfort. And if I see him back home, it means we got out." Yes, Martha did use the word we. If she found a way out, it would be a way out for everyone and not just herself.
