day 210 | video
[ the art of disguise is not merely physical. it runs on many layers, and the ability to replicate and manipulate emotions is just as important as the way one looks. it all comes in handy, though, especially when you're a world-renowned criminal mastermind in a new place with new people and you need to get your bearings.

this is why the residents of marina will be finding themselves in the company of richard brook, the fretful out-of-work actor, rather than the criminal mastermind that is james moriarty. it's only practical, after all; it would be absolutely ridiculous for everyone to be aware of his capabilities right off the bat.

the rumpled-looking man showing on the video feed is rather obviously distressed. he seems more fearful than angry, however -- his voice wavers as he mutters to himself, very quietly.
]

...torture? Murder? Really, I can't --

[ he pauses, and takes a deep breath. ]

I thought we'd been through all this once already. I'm innocent. I didn't do any of those horrible things, not a single one -- all I did was look the part. I swear, I'm being honest, I'll tell you everything all over again if I need to.

[ that tremor isn't just in his voice, now. he's shaking. ]

You've got the wrong man. This is a mistake. Please, just let me go home.

I mostly worked with children before, so yeah, that was a good cause, but after that ... admittedly not the best. [ sigh. ] I hope to make up for it somehow.

With children you say? [ she's immediately intrigued ] If such is a thing you'd like to return to, I do know of several children in the dome who might appreciate your efforts. It would be a start, at least, for making up whatever it is that you've done.

Yeah. My main thing was a children's show. I was The Storyteller.

[ a fond smile. ]

Wait -- children in a prison?

[ she smiles fondly as well. ] You must have had many stories to tell then. Was this a play you narrated or was it more like the tales of old, narrated by one the greats such as Homer?

[ and then her smile fades away and she nod emphatically ]

Yes, I'm afraid so. I've seen some as young as thirteen unless I miss my guess. [ and with the worst language known to mankind spewing from their mouths. She hasn't yet gotten over her shock enough to speak to one of them about it. It is simply appalling ]

A TV show, actually. Serial. I read them children's books, it was pretty straightforward.

[ his brow furrows. rich is merely concerned - jim's wondering about the talent and promise these thirteen-year-olds must have. ]

That's ... certainly something. I thought juvenile criminals typically had separate facilities -- ah, I've kind of got to remember that nothing about this prison is typical.

I think thirteen might be overshooting my usual audience range, but hey.

[ and she's hardly aware of how much more complicated television programs can become. They had been suspended for quite some time on account of the war. ]

It certainly does sound like worthwhile work. I still see no reason you can't find something similar to do in the dome.

[ and then she sighed ] And of course you are right; but many of us will likewise claim that we have done nothing at all to justify our current situation. Surely that would be your claim, would it not?

[ it had certainly sounded like it, moments before. ]

Yeah. From the sounds of it I'll probably take a look at the classes here and then try and sort something out with the kids.

[ he gives a shrug of surrender.

From what people are saying, I could have done the things the list said without knowing it. So if I did, then ... there's that. But I honestly don't remember it at all, if that's how things went. All I do know is what I told you.

[ she nodded carefully ]

And perhaps, as you say, the wardens have mistaken playacting for truth. It certainly is easy enough with how film can be spliced together these days.

[ and after all the propaganda footage she's endured in her research of the German empire, she doesn't doubt it in the least. ]
